Spoken and Sign Language Interpreter Training in the Czech Republic and Austria

The thesis focuses on possibilities of spoken and sign language interpreter training in the Czech Republic and Austria. The theoretical part describes the situation of the deaf in the Czech Republic and in Austria and explains the terms connected with communication of the deaf. Furthermore, it contains a brief overview of the history of spoken and sign language interpreter training and a description of the conditions for interpreters in both countries respectively. The most detailed chapters of the theoretical part deal with training institutions for spoken and sign language interpreters. The main focus is on the Institute of Translation studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague and the Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Graz. The empirical part presents the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among Master students of the two institutes who evaluated how well the university prepares them for their future career.

The aim of the bachelor thesis is a summary of informations about sign languages in Czech and English introductions to the study of language. This thesis analises each linguistic book focusing on informations about sign languages, which those books included. Furthermore it focuses on the description of differences in the extent of informations about sign languages in the monitored publication. It also summarizes found informations concerning sing languages and compares informations about sign languages included in Czech and English introductions to the study of language. Hearing awareness majority of deaf minority

Title: Hearing Awareness majority of the deaf community Purpose: The aim was to determine the level of awareness and knowledge of the majority hearing population of minority deaf population. The research focuses on three areas: the experience of hearing population of the deaf community, the culture of deaf people and deaf communication. Methods: The questionnaire was presented to 100 respondents. Was anonymous and age of the respondents was 15 years old and unidentified. The questionnaire was self- constructed . It was a quantitative research methodology type of observation. The results of the questionnaires were collected after a personal touch, from processed and analyzed using statistical program EXCEL, and then presented in tabular and graphical form. Results: Respondents from the Ústí region have confirmed by their answers two hypotheses and one hypothesis disproved. Confirmed hypothesis related to personal experiences with the hearing majority deaf community. Personal experience of respondents in excess of 50%, even moved above this high a percentage point. The remaining two hypotheses concerning the communication and culture of deaf people (both 50%), were refuted, since awareness of respondents was not so good. Social and collective identity of the Deaf community/ies in Prague

This work deals with the collective and social identity of the Prague deaf. It is based on the presumption that the deaf can be regarded as a social group with specific characteristics which are interesting from a sociological perspective. The aim of this work is a description and understanding of the mode the deaf relate to each other and the way the social mechanisms are used for this purpose. The crucial chapter deals with the social categorization as a key mechanism for building and maintaining the social identity of the deaf. The following part is devoted to the collective identity, where two ideal types of the deaf collective identity are presented. The work is based on the qualitative research, which was conducted through semi-structured interviews with the deaf, simultaneously translated into Czech. Role shifting in Czech Sign Language

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the expression of role shifting in Czech sign language. The goal of the thesis is to describe the mechanisms of expressing role shifting in Czech sign language within our survey and comparing the results with findings from abroad. The principles of work are mostly based on foreign literature and they are compared with Czech sign language. A part of the thesis is a DVD of deaf respondents' recordings who use Czech sign language and which illustrate the way of expressing role shifting in Czech sign language.

The theoretical part describes communication, communicative situations and communication of people with hearing disabilities. The aim of practical part was - through a questionnaire survey among cabin crew and interviews with Deaf, Hard of hearing and Deafened passengers - to describe the current situation in this area. Cistercian and Benedictine Sign Language in the Middle Ages

Radka Těšínská Lomičková: Cistercian and Benedictine Sign Language in the Middle Age Sign language is an important communication phenomenon that has existed for a thousand years. In medieval monasteries signs were used to enable simple communication of messages when rules of silence forbade monks from speaking. This thesis concentrates on a study of sign language communication in Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries during the Middle Ages. In doing so it describes the history of sign language in Europe between the 10th and 15th centuries. Furthermore it shows that sign language was not only used in the center of the order but in the Czech Republic as well. This thesis provides a detailed discussion of sign lexicons which are similar to a monolingual dictionary and are the basic and central source of information about each language. Lexicons contain words and short descriptions of how to make each hand sign. A careful analysis of one particular sign lexicon, called Siquis (which was used in Central Europe in the 15th century), reveals new information about daily life in medieval monasteries. The primary focus of the Siquis lexicon was liturgy, food and drink, utensils, persons, and activities. Communication problems of the majority society with a group of deaf

The topic of the thesis is communication problems of the majority of society and groups of deaf people. Deaf people also live in the majority of hearing society. These people meet each other and they can communicate with each other. This communication is problematic, however, because in the communication of deaf and hearing there are communication barriers. In this thesis, we used a quantitative method of the surveyed hearing respondents. We researched what communication problems exist in the communication of the majority society and a group of deaf people. Based on the methods used, we found that communication problems are mainly caused by a lack of awareness of the major societies of the group of deaf people. Self-esteem of university students with severe hearing disabilities

This paper deals with self-esteem of university students with hearing impairment. It primarily utilizes a qualitative approach that deals with the analysis of the statements of six respondents. Basic concepts related to self-esteem and an overview of current research are presented in the theoretical part of the paper. In the empirical part, a quantitative test (SLSC-R) is used. However, the main focus of the work lies in application and interpretation of the qualitative method - "authors' questionnaire". This work strives to find and describe factors which are believed to affect self-esteem of the respondents. The paper aims to be a contribution to the psychology of disability, for example, in identifying and describing areas that are believed to be useful for further research.

Miroslava Kotvová ABSTRACT: Bachelor thesis with the title the Development of the language skills of CODA is focused on the description of the development and acquisition of language hearing children of deaf parents, both spoken language and sign. The aim is to describe the development of language competence CODA studied to the basis of the available literature and interviews with CODA individuals. The theoretical part presents the field of the education of the deaf, culture and the Deaf community, sign language, but also a description of the acquisition of sign and spoken language. The practical part consists of the case studies of CODA which were based on the interviews with the individuals or even with them and their parents. The work highlights the problem of bilingual individuals growing up in a home environment with the sign language with the influence of the spoken language of the major society, but also the difficulty and importance of the election code of communication for deaf parents.
