Does Community Practice Need Theory?
Juráčková, Anna ; Baštecká, Bohumila (advisor) ; Janečková, Hana (referee)
The goal of the thesis is to find if the community approach used by its leading figures is based on the theory and how they use the theory. The thesis introduces modern concept of community, which can be seen as the actual ground for community work. First of all it presents wide range of often used definitions, then it offers the view of community by disciplines like philosophy, theology, political philosophy - communitarism, and last but not least it presents the sociological interpretation of community and marginally also the anthropological one. In the research part the reader is acquainted with five personal stories of community approach leading figures - people, who were engaged or who are still actively interested in the work with community. Showing the main ideas of these people which characterize their approaches to the practice and studying their relation to the theory and view on community the thesis uncovers, if they see the theoretical support as needed for their work. Migrants in irregular position - Czechia: a country of destination
Medová, Lenka ; Drbohlav, Dušan (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Toušek, Václav (referee)
Since the beginning of the 1990s, Europe has been confronted with an increase of irregular migration in connexion to the collapse of the communist regimes. Today, it is estimated that there are from about 2 to 4 million irregular migrants living in the European Union. Most of them take part in local informal economies. Besides traditional immigration countries of Western Europe, the southern European countries have also become a destination region of irregular migration. Recently though, the same can be said about some post- communist European countries, namely Czechia. The dissertation focuses on irregular migration in Czechia. More specifically, it deals with irregularly working migrants in the period preceding the global economic crisis. As there is insufficient level of knowledge of the phenomenon in Czechia, the dissertation delivers empirical material regarding forms and reasons of irregular migration and structure, volume and strategies of irregularly working migrants. These characteristics are framed within the European context. Moreover, from the terminological point of view, the dissertation tries to bypass the limitations of the Czech literature and presents own terminology of the given processes and their actors. Finally, the dissertation aims to contribute to current theoretical and...
The U.S. low-wage structure: a McWage comparison
Ashenfelter, O. ; Jurajda, Štěpán
Thanks to standardized work protocol and technology of McDonald’s restaurants, the hourly wage of McDonald’s Basic Crew enables wage comparisons under near-identical skill inputs and hedonic job conditions. McWages capture labor costs in entry-level jobs, while the Big Macs (earned) Per Hour (BMPH) index measures corresponding purchasing power of wages. We document large and growing geographical wage differences in standardized jobs using data covering most U.S. counties during 2016-2023. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, there was no BMPH growth where minimum wages stayed constant, but the pandemic wage increase, which diminished the importance of minimum wages, was stronger in these areas.
American war in Vietnam by through the lens of the Czechoslovakian communist propaganda in years 1964-1989
Ill, Petr ; Šedivý, Ivan (advisor) ; Michela, Miroslav (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to analyse the interpretation of the American war in Vietnam by communist propaganda in Czechoslovakia between 1964-1989. Using textual analysis, the thesis examines how communist propaganda through the media, especially the press, reported on the Vietnam War, what image it created of the United States and the Republic of Vietnam during the war, how it perceived the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the role of the Soviet Union in the conflict, and how much it promoted the anti-war movement. The penultimate chapter deals with the image of the Vietnam War in selected media during the Prague Spring, where it gets into some comparison of the media approach in the then Czechoslovakia. The last chapter is a certain interpretation of Western cinema on the mentioned topic. The main source for this topic is the film reviews that appeared in various media, including Rudé Právo. As far as communist propaganda is concerned, the thesis analyses mainly printed media, the exception being audiovisual news in the form of the Czechoslovak film weekly. The thesis is conceived as a qualitative, not quantitative analysis. The purpose is not to analyse and interpret every article from the communist media, but to answer the research questions mentioned above and to present the overall picture of...
Measurement of premorbid intelligence level using the Cognitive Reserve Inventory (CRIq) and its comparison with the Czech Reading Test (NART/CART) and fluid intelligence level
Laštůvková, Viktorie ; Bezdíček, Ondřej (advisor) ; Goláňová, Ivana (referee)
The present bachelor thesis deals with the estimation of premorbid intelligence as a method used in the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. Its aim was to test whether the CRIq inventory would hold up in estimating premorbid intelligence compared to a traditional method based on reading irregular words. The theoretical part of the paper includes a detailed definition of the concepts of intelligence, premorbid intelligence and cognitive reserve, discusses the relationships between them, describes the historical development of the measurement of these constructs and presents current knowledge about them. The empirical part presents the results of the analysis of data obtained by administering the CRIq inventory, the word reading test, and the intelligence test to healthy individuals between the ages of 18 and 60. In the research part, the resulting IQ scores obtained by each method were compared, and regression and correlation analyses were performed. Based on the results of the statistical analysis of the data, it was concluded that the CRIq inventory would hold up as a method of measuring premorbid intelligence. This paper should provide an overview of both traditional and modern methods currently used in the field of estimating premorbid intelligence, highlight the importance of developing...

Žáková, Aneta ; Hanáková, Veronika (advisor) ; Šlerka, Josef (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on glass plates as a photographic medium that was mainly used from the 1840s to 1880s. The goal of this thesis is to define the period discourse and the influence of this media on socio-economic situation through the research method of media archaeology, and therefore to create a complex profile of glass plates as a semi-forgotten medium. These sources are further accompanied by information from the institutions Museum Fotoatelier Seidel and Observatoř Kleť. The obtained information indicates that glass...

Číková, Anna ; Červinková, Monika (advisor) ; Vítek, Petr (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to map the system of admission of patients to inpatient psychiatric wards and to describe possible ways of forming a therapeutic relationship with the patient at the first contact. In the current situation in the Czech Republic, psychologist is not present in the admission ward, so the initial contact of the patient with the institution is mediated by the medical staff. I would like to show the possible benefits of including a psychologist in the admission process. The literature review part includes a description of the formation of the patient's relationship with the institution in the context of admission to acute care hospitals. I will discuss techniques for creating a positive first contact, i.e., bonding of the client to the institution. More specifically, the thesis will also address the management of aggressive patients and crisis intervention, as the dignity of acute admission patients already affects the relationship and trust with the institution and trust. The research design will be tailored to the as yet unexplored area of a psychologist's presence at admission to hospital. The main research question I will address will be the causality between a psychologist's presence at admission to hospital and the amount of patients refusing treatment. As a result of the...
