In its first part, the thesis focuses on a description of the demographic development of the seniors, a description of informal care and the problems associated with it, solidarity, caregiving burden, and the possibilities of assistance and support for informal caregivers. Furthermore, the thesis sets out to describe what assistive technologies are, how informal carers use them and how they relieve them of the caring burden. Through quantitative measurement using my own modification of the ZBI-4 questionnaire, I describe caregiving burden, taking into account basic sociodemographic data. The results show no statistically significant differences either across genders or across generations, apart from a significantly lower perceived caregiving burden for Generation X. I follow the quantitative part of the research with the qualitative part, based on semi-structured interviews. In the qualitative part, I describe the reasons for the decision for informal caregiving, its form and consequences, potential generational differences,...
Need Assessment of Alcohol-dependent Seniors in Medium-term Institutional Treatment
Ondráčková, Petra ; Šťastná, Lenka (advisor) ; Svěcená, Kateřina (referee)
Background: Owing to current demographic trends reflecting an aging population, there is an increase in the group of older individuals facing issues related to alcohol consumption. This group is increasingly seeking assistance within the network of addiction services, including medium-term institutional treatment. Due to the unique physical, emotional, and cognitive characteristics associated with aging seniors and older adults respond differently to treatment compared to younger adults. Currently, healthcare providers often lack sufficient interventions related to treatment and harm reduction for substance use among older adults, addressing a broad-spectrum risk associated with substance use in this age group. Goals: The goal of the thesis is to use needs analysis to determine the needs of older users in medium-term institutional treatment and to assess whether the range of interventions meets these needs. Additionally, the thesis aims to identify potential improvements to the service better address these needs. Methodology: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with clients undergoing medium- term institutional treatment. The research sample, consisting of 7 men and 6 women aged 65 and older, was selected through intentional (purposive) sampling, specifically employing purposive selection...
The impact of social media on social participation and quality of life of the elderly in the Czech Republic
Přiklopilová, Jana ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (advisor) ; Schneiderová, Soňa (referee)
The Czech population is ageing, and the number of seniors continues to grow year on year. At the same time, the number of working seniors, who currently make up one tenth of the Czech workforce, is increasing. There is also a decline in the number of extended family structures, which more often provide the necessary social network and support, compared to narrower nuclear family types. That is not the only reason why there is an increase in the number of lonely seniors, who are isolated from the world and social relations and who stop participating in social activities. It is estimated that one in three seniors across the globe struggles with loneliness. With the advent of modern information technology, the question arises whether virtual contact can help to address the issue of loneliness and improve the social participation of seniors. The aim of this thesis was to provide a deeper insight into the situation in the Czech Republic, outlining potential benefits and risks as well as possible barriers for this demographic group. This research found that Czech seniors use social media not only to maintain relationships with their family and friends, but also to broaden their horizons in the field of hobbies and take an active interest in current and political events. Social media can thus be a tool...

Siváková, Kateřina ; Komorná, Marie (advisor) ; Horynová, Jana (referee)
This bachellor thesis is focused on logopaedic intervention and its benefits in retirement homes. It is subdivided into a theoretical and an empiric part. The theoretical part is mainly dedicated to defining the terms of ' age' and 'ageing', characterisation of the most common communication disorders among elderly people and their diagnostics, etiology, therapy and symptoms. The system of care of elderly people in the Czech Republic is also depicted in the theoretical part, introducing all kinds of services provided to seniors, mainly in retirement homes. Further, logopaedic intervention and its possible application is described. The following empiric part of the thesis inspected logopedic intervention in a particular retirement home including the assessment of logopedic care contribution by the retirement home's employees. Employees were specifically chosen to assess their clients' progress as they are in a day-to-day contact with them and can therefore observe any improvements brought on by this kind of care. At the same time, they shall be more unbiased as opposed to the logopedician providing the logopedic care or the elderly people themselves. The research has proven that the employees have no deep knowledge in terms of specific methods used in the intervention, they rather have a vague grasp...
Active ageing in the times of covid. Experiences of the organizers of free time activities
Mejtská, Petra ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Hrešanová, Ema (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the experiences of employees and volunteers working in centres and clubs for the elderly people that organize leisure activities for their clients. These organisations fulfil the idea of active ageing, which they define as healthy and correct way of ageing. Activity, participation and social contact are important aspects of this concept, which should lead to an improved quality of life in old age, physical and mental health and other benefits. However, during the spring of 2020, all activities of the centres (and other institutions) were interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Elderly people were advised to stay home and isolate themselves. This, however, brought additional risks for them. Loneliness in old age is a debated topic that was accentuated during the pandemic. This thesis uses qualitative methods, and my communication partners are volunteers, lecturers and managers of the senior centres and clubs who worked there throughout the pandemic and beyond. Using in-depth qualitative, semi-open-ended interviews, this thesis is interested in how they coped with the sudden closure during the pandemic and what strategies they adopted to protect their clients. The text seeks to approach their decision-making on the edge of two risks - loneliness and the possibility of...
