Bilanová, Joanna ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Hanzal, Jaromír (referee)
News service is an important aspect of the journalistic aktivity. I tis main goal is to inform the public about actualities. Even though the news service is subject to strict regulations, we can observe substantial differences between the programs of different TV channels and also between broadcasting in different countries. My work consists of an investigation into the differences in broadcasting in two bordering countries - the Czech Republic and Poland. This essay primarily focuses on the comparison of the major local broadcasting channels Události v regionech ČT Ostrava and Aktualności TVP Katowice. I am mainly concerned about the differences in production of individual news, beginning with the choice - making as to what news to include, through the production of the news, and finishing with the final broadcasting. My research question is: Are there any differences between local broadcasting of these two channels? The main method of investigation employed in this essay is a semiotic analysis together with a quantitative analysis and interviews.

"We Will Not Let Our Republic Be Disrupted!" - Third Resistance in The Czechoslovak Media
Dordová, Alžběta ; Groman, Martin (advisor) ; Knapík, Jiří (referee)
This thesis is focused on the topic of media use in a system of a communist totality. It provides an analysis of presentation of selected characters directly or indirectly involved in activities of the anti-communist, so called third resistance, in the Czechoslovak press media of that era. By using the interpretation of results of semiotic analysis of selected news and publicistic articles the author of the thesis attempts to answer the research questions and confirm or disconfirm the hypothesis that communist press media used the above mentioned cases particularly for the promotion of the official ideology. Political and medial contexts as well as brief life-stories of the chosen third resistance representatives are outlined in the theoretical part of the thesis, while the analysis with the interpretation of its results are discussed in the practical part. The conclusion of the analysis confirms that the communist press media associated those representatives with predominantly negative connotations and that the meanings of all the selected articles were strongly affected by propagandistic elements.
Methods of displaying death in the Sandman comic books
Jedličková, Barbora ; Podzimek, Jan (advisor) ; Hrdina, Matouš (referee)
This thesis deals with the depiction of death in the Sandman comic books written by Neil Gaiman. It aims to explore the forms of death that the author presents in his comics through pictorial and textual codes. The work begins with a reflection on the phenomenon of death and how this phenomenon and its depiction stand in time and in current perception. The theory of visual semiotics is used for research, especially the findings of Ch. S. Peirce and the theory of multimodality, which is described in the theoretical part. The focus is then shifted to the comics itself and towards the characteristics of individual elements of visual language applicable for describing comic images, such as color, perspective, panel size, framing, etc. The analysis of images is preceded by research depicting death from the perspective of western culture in its historical context. In the description of the images, the essential features of the individual modes are determined and their meanings are interpreted. The conclusion is summarizing author's findings and try to confirm the initial thought presented at the beginning of the work: that Gaiman perceived the character of Death very differently than is usual in contemporary commercial images.

Smeták, Adam ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The bachelor's thesis "Media image of the Patria ship disaster in the periodical press" deals with the examination of media reports on the topic in three selected periodicals. The texts published in České slovo and Národní politika in the period from November 1940 to May 1945 and the texts in Lidové noviny in the period from November 1940 to April 1945 are subjected to semiotic analysis. The aim of the work is to construct a media image of the catastrophe of the ship Patria, which took place on May 25, 1940 off the coast of Palestine, within three selected media, which was published in the so called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. In this work, individual media messages are compared. Part of the work is also a description of the historical events of the disaster of the steamer Patria, including eyewitness accounts of two Czechoslovaks who were on board the ship at the time, or watched its destruction. The bachelor's thesis is also marginally devoted to informing about the event outside the period under review, to illustrate the way in which the domestic public has learned about the disaster over the years.
