Trasffered stigma of otherness in ethnically mixed partnerships in the Czech Republic

My diploma thesis on the basis of intersectionality analyzes the social construction of "otherness" in etnically mixed partnerships and how does it manifests and influences the self- conception of Czech women that are in the mixed relationships. Further, it analyzes how the partners "otherness" affects the position of the women in the society. In my thesis I work with the concept of transmitted stigma, because the etnical otherness is not constructed on the horizontal differences, but contains also classifing and assesing aspects, which may situate the mixed patnerships to the positions of dis/advantage. For my qualitative research I have chosen semi-structured interviews with women, that were born and live in the Czech Republic and are or was in etnically mixed relationship. Kidnapping Otherness. Tourism, Imaginaries and Rumor in Eastern Indonesia

This dissertation is based on my research into distinction processes (Calhoun, 1994; Cerulo 1997) between tourists and inhabitants of West Sumba in Eastern Indonesia. The imaginiaries (Castoriadis, 1987; Strauss, 2006; Lacan, 1977; Anderson, 1991; Salazar, 2012) of West Sumbanese people about foreigners also emerge from diving rumors (Bysow, 1928; Allport and Postman, 1947/1965). Their origins, dissemination, and sharpening processes, as well as their consequences will be analysed herein. This case study demonstrates how mental models of otherness are formed and reified, how they clash, and for what purposes they may be utilized. It will also analyze how imaginaries influence behavior and may lead to miscommunication in West Sumba.

South Africa through the eyes of travel programs of Ceska televize

The Thesis focuses on the travelling programs of the Česká televize that are describing South Africa in its medial content. The key are the means of showing and presenting to its spectators this exotic detination as a turistic target and if there is a wider context of social and political struggles provided next to the given information. Semiotic analysis was chosen for the research, where 13 episodes of the travelling documents were included. This type of analysis enabled us to focus on a large amount of the information comming from both visual and audial content of each episode. During the first phase of analysis it waas described what was included in the episode where the second step was to assign a conotative meaning to identified features. The outcome of the analysis was a creation of a few categories where a different strategy of the specific travelling programs is compared. They are for example the approach to the stereotypes, the artistic form including the choice of the program's main guide, parasocial interaction, to which extent they use the etnocentricity or the internal hypertextuality. Imaginations of "Otherness" and Freak Show Culture in the 19th- and 20th-Century Prague

in English Dissertation deals with the freak show culture in Prague and the Czech lands in a broader context of the modern discourses of dis/ability and the imaginations of the collective body of the Czech nation. Exhibitions of "Lilliputians", "Giants", "Siamese twins" and other "extraordinary" bodies are analyzed here as a part of the history of an international entertainment culture in the 19th-century Europe. The emphasis lays on the turn of the century, the decade that witnessed rash development both of the capitalist entertainment industry and the expert disciplines that dealt with the "ab/normal". I claim, that the popularity of freak shows in this period rested in their ability to articulate fears and ambitions of their visitors, both in their individual embodied experience and their imaginative belonging, notably their belonging to the collective body of the Czech nation. In four case studies, I focus on individual freak figures and analyze how the intersections of different axes of difference - ethnicity, gender, class - within the representation of "the extraordinary", coproduced certain notion of social order and power hierarchies that were closely intertwined with the imagined collective body of nation.

Divnolidi z Brna a okolí: Construction of otherness on Facebook social network site

This thesis aims to describe and analyze the process of construction of otherness, use of humour and taste performance on Facebook page Divnolidi z Brna a okolí. Theoretical background explores contemporary approaches to the research of social network sites (particulary on privacy and sharing; a separate chapter is devoted to Facebook social network site), sociological term of taste as the instrument for social distinction (here, the study is primarily based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu), interdisciplinary concept of otherness (in which we examine works of Mary Douglas, Stuart Hall and Marc Augé) as well as theoretical approach to humour called theory of superiority. We conducted a quantitative description of Divnolidi z Brna a okolí page and a qualitative analysis (a method often called "data-crawling") of 47 page posts. Analytical section of this study focuses on answering following questions: What types of posts can be found on the site? How are individuals captured in these posts perceived? How do the users perceive taste / otherness of the captured individuals? Where were these "weird people" (in Czech language "divnolidi") spotted and how do the users perceive these places? Remember the Bombs: Memory of the Belgrade Bombings from the Second World War from 1995 until 2003

This study explores the usage of the memory of the bombings of Belgrade from WWII in the time period of Yugoslavia from 1995 until 2003. Considering that Belgrade was bombed by two opposing forces during WWII, once by Nazis in 1941, and the second time by the Allies in 1944, and due to the fact that the exploitation of memory of the two bombings was rather unequal during the Socialist Yugoslavia with the latter bombings being a taboo theme, I was interested in answering following questions: how the two memories were used in the times before, during and after the NATO Air Strikes of Yugoslavia, if the memory of the Allied bombings emerged in the public sphere and how it coexists with the one of the Nazi bombings. My primary sources are articles from "Politika" newspaper issues from commemoration dates during the research time frame from 1995 until 2003. The final conclusion shows the dominant usage of the memory of the Nazi bombings throughout the whole time frame even though we could witness the emergence of the memory of the Allied bombings.

Problems in Social Contact with a Person with Visual Impairment

Téma: Problémy v sociálním kontaktu s člověkem se zrakovým postižením Autor: Markéta Víšková Abstract The bachelor thesis is focused on the concept of the visual impairment in the context of the phenomenon of otherness, quality of life, social contact and problems that the visual impairment brings in terms of social life. The author assumes that despite all inseparable characteristics and consequences of vision defects, such as problems in orientation and independent movement or deficit of visual stimuli, visual impairment is in particular a problem in psychosocial terms. The link between the three chapters of the present thesis is therefore the social dimension of disability. Therefore it is proceeded from the general topic of the attitude of the society to diversity, formative influence of terminology on the specific personality characteristics, needs and problems in social interaction between the people with visual disabilities and intact society.
