The role of boarding schools for the Deaf in the Czech Republic - since 1786 to present days

(in English): This bachelor thesis presents the history and development of institutional care at the Czech boarding schools for the hearing impaired, as well as at the then institutes for the Deaf and dumb from 1786 to present. It describes the regime at these boarding schools, extracurricular activities of the pupils, pedagogical supervision and the schools facilities. The school regime is dealt with according to centuries. The bachelor work also brings up the issue of the Deaf communities, both home and abroad and explores the impact of the boarding schools on the community. The findings are interpreted in the light of individual development of the child staying in a boarding school, namely its impact on child's personality. The work draws data from the specialized past and present bibliography, legislative norms and other relevant documents. The final part of the bachelor thesis presents the results of the findings concerning the issue of hearing impaired children in residential care. They prove that children staying in boarding schools suffer from deprivation which is, furthermore, enhanced in case of deaf children who lack an opportunity to communicate in their mother tongue, i.e. sign language with the peers. Specifics of Translating Biblical Texts into Czech Sign Language

The bachelor thesis is concerned with the principles of translation of biblical texts into Czech Sign Language. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses Bible translation in general, and more specifically, in relation to sign language translation. It summarises existing findings from studies on foreign translations of biblical texts into sign languages, such as American Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, Sign Language Lesco. The practical part provides an analysis of the Dictionary of Signs for Christian Concepts for Deaf People and two video translations of passages from New Testament into Czech Sign Language, making recommendations for updates to the Dictionary based on these findings. The thesis then brings together the theoretical knowledge and the present findings and proposes a set of principles and mandatory guidelines for translation of biblical texts into Czech Sign Language. History and the present code of ethics in the helping professions

This work is focused on issues of codes of ethics. It outlines the historical roots from ancient times to the present. It presents information on the principles, rules, standards and aims which combine ethical codes. The second part of this work is focused on the Code of ethics of sign language interpreters, which was created by Czech Chamber of Sign Language Interpreters. It analyse in detail each point of this Code of ethics and presents basic specifics and principles of interpreting. The main aim of this work is to analyse complience with the principles of the Code and analyze overall condition of interpreting services in the Czech Republic. These analyses is based on the interviews with the interpretor and the deaf, which represents two opposing views on this issue.
Spoken and Sign Language Interpreter Training in the Czech Republic and Austria

The thesis focuses on possibilities of spoken and sign language interpreter training in the Czech Republic and Austria. The theoretical part describes the situation of the deaf in the Czech Republic and in Austria and explains the terms connected with communication of the deaf. Furthermore, it contains a brief overview of the history of spoken and sign language interpreter training and a description of the conditions for interpreters in both countries respectively. The most detailed chapters of the theoretical part deal with training institutions for spoken and sign language interpreters. The main focus is on the Institute of Translation studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague and the Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Graz. The empirical part presents the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among Master students of the two institutes who evaluated how well the university prepares them for their future career.
Time Prepositions in Writings of Czech Deaf

The thesis deals with the written Czech language of the Czech Deaf, specifically with time prepositions in written Czech language of the Czech Deaf. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with feature and classification of Czech prepositions, especially time prepositions, based on Czech linguistic studies, and deals with attributes of written Czech language of the Czech Deaf related to use of prepositions. The practical part of the thesis includes research focused on usage of time prepositions in writings of the Czech Deaf and includes the analysis of qualities in the usage of prepositional phrases by the deaf students of secondary school for the hearing-impaired in Hradec Králové and analysis of written texts of Czech deaf students of secondary schools for the hearing-impaired. The thesis is based on Czech and foreign studies related to relevant topics and it should be a contribution to teachers who work in Czech shools for hearing-impared.
Coping strategies in case of hearing loss in young age

The bachelor thesis is devoted to the topic of hearing loss in young age. The thesis is focused on the process of coping with hearing loss acquired in adolescence and young adulthood. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine ways, how people experienced the acquired deafness, how they coped with it, which processes helped them to deal with the deafness and where they found support, and vice versa what makes the coping process harder. The thesis consists of two parts - a theoretical and a practical one. The first, theoretical part describes the meaning of hearing ability and consequences of hearing impairments on human life, and focuses on defining people with hearing impairment and on specification of post- lingual deaf people in the group of people with hearing impairment. It follows up with characterization of developmental periods of adolescence and early adulthood. The main part is the chapter of stress, of coping strategies in general and of coping with hearing loss as a hard life situation specifically. For practical empirical part, was chosen a technique of qualitative research. Upbringing of their Hearing Child by Deaf Parents

This bachelor thesis focuses on deaf parents and the upbringing of their hearing children. It discusses the topic of hearing impairment, its consequences and communication systems or hearing compensation people with this disability can use. It also explores the topic of Deaf and CODA individuals and families consisting of a parent or parents with this disability and hearing children. For the last chapter, a research survey was carried out. The author conducted structured interviews with a total of nine informants from six families, who were asked to share their experience with the upbringings of their hearing children. All questions were divided into nine topics and the obtained data were subsequently analysed. The output of this work are partial conclusions and recommendations, which concern both the parents themselves and schools, doctors and organizations dedicated to the deaf. Primary school pupils awareness of Deaf community

The diploma thesis is elaborated on the topic of awareness of primary school pupils about the Deaf community, in general about people with hearing impairment. The aim of the work is obtain information about how students are informed about the issue of the Deaf community and to increase this knowledge using research methods. The theoretical part is focused on a general introduction to the issue of people with hearing impairment, the division of hearing impairments, terms used in this field, as well as on the communication of people with hearing impairment and compensatory aids. One of the chapters then brings important knowledge about the Deaf community, their culture and also about several organizations associating people with hearing impairments in general and their surroundings. The next chapter deals with the possibilities of obtaining information about the culture of the Deaf, while the work lists the Internet, magazines, lectures and sign language courses as sources of information. Written Texts of Czech Deaf

The topic of the dissertation is the communication of the deaf in written Czech. The theoretical part presents the studies of written Czech for the deaf which have been carried out in the Czech Republic so far, considers the causes of difficulties the deaf encounter when making Czech written texts, and deals with the position of written Czech in the education of the deaf. The next part is devoted to the Czech sign language, the characteristics of its specifics and its role in the communication and education of deaf pupils, especially in connection with the currently valid legislation. Attention is also focused on the components and construction of narrative texts and on the acquisition of narrative competencies in spoken and sign languages. The research part is focused on the qualitative analysis of narrative texts in Czech, the authors of which are deaf pupils of two primary schools for the hearing impaired aged 14 to 16, and which were created on the basis of a picture story. Deaf culture focused on visiting castles in the Czech Republic

This Bachelor thesis is focused Deaf culture in the Czech Republic. The purpose of this paper is examining attitude of the Deaf community towards culture, especially cultural landsites. Secondly, it is supposed to inform about the insufficient translating capacities available considering the access barier of such cultural events. Theoretical part describes ear anatomy, diagnostics, hearing aids and individual problems and needs of respective handicapped people. Second theoretical part is focused on Deaf cummunity and culture built around it. Emprirical part is based on survey conducted in the Deaf communities around the Czech Republic. This method shows how does this community evaluate the quality of cultural life (visiting castles and chateaus) and what could be done to enhance it.
