Contemporary history textbooks as a tool for developping historical thinking of the elementary school students - case of French Revolution
Tomčíková, Eva ; Najbert, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Pinkas, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis inspects how the topic of French Revolution is presented in three chosen textbooks, corresponding exercise books and, in some cases, methodical guidelines for Czech elementary schools (textbooks by the publishing houses Fraus, Nová škola and Státní pedagogické nakladatelství). This is done through three of the six historical thinking concepts as established by Peter Seixas. The chosen concepts are: (identify) continuity and change, (analyze) cause and consequence and (take) historical perspetives. The thesis consists of a theoretical (chapters on historical literacy, inquiry-based learning, six historical thinking concepts, defining the topic of French Revolution and how it is elaborated in historiography, the significance and the role of the texbooks in teaching history) and a practical part (analysis and comparison of the chosen textbooks, exercise books and, in some cases, metodical guidelines, a plan of a unit on the given topic in the lenght of three standard lessons, which is oriented towards the development of the historical thinking of students). Considering the current state of Czech research of textbooks by Seixas' concepts, which is very limited, the methodology and research questions are newly and somewhat experimentaly created. The result of this research is the fact that...

Nedbal, Václav ; Mikeska, Tomáš (advisor) ; Parkan, František (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the appropriate and effective use of film and serial adaptations of topics falling into the period of communist totalitarianism in Czechoslovakia (that is between 1948 and 1989, with emphasis on the period 1948-1969). The thesis is divided into four chapters, whereas the main part, which is didactic, is described in the third and fourth chapter. The first chapter describes the basic historical context of the communist government in Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1989. It also shows and explains the origin of the idea of communism, the further development of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia during the First Republic, and the postwar Third Republic. This chapter was put together using found edited sources and secondary literature. The second chapter deals with individual film and serial processing of topics related to the period. It presents specific films and series which were produced in the most recent years (or the post-revolutionary period), but also materials produced during the totalitarianism before 1989. In this chapter some works are discussed in greater detail, others are presented as selected alternative options for interaction for educational purposes. The third chapter summarizes the didactic and historical potential of the discussed topic, it also...

Hoffmannová, Valérie ; Dvořáková, Radka (advisor) ; Chlebounová, Irena (referee)
(AJ) The main aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze the learning tasks related to the topic of the origin and development of the human species in textbooks and workbooks for the second grade of primary school. Textbooks and workbooks of biology and history were selected for analysis. The learning tasks were categorized into individual categories of Tollinger taxonomy and Bloom's original taxonomy. The results of this classification were used to compare older and newer editions of selected textbooks and workbooks. I also found out the difficulty of tasks in each publications. This analysis revealed that teaching tasks from lower taxonomic categories (for both taxonomies), which do not high demands of cognitive operations, are more represented. Furthermore, this work deals how extent the topic in individual publications. Further analyzes revealed that teaching tasks of the origin and development of human species are more represented in the textbooks and workbooks of history. The results of this work could help teachers to find way in the offer of available textbooks and workbooks and help select a suitable publication to teach the topic of the origin and development of the human species. Key words: analysis, biology, Bloom's taxonomy, history, human evolution, Tollinger's taxonomy, textbooks, workbook
The Use of School Historic Atlases in Elementary School Education
Ďurkech, Pavol ; Havelková, Lenka (advisor) ; Chromý, Pavel (referee)
The Bachelor thesis is focused on functions and use of school historical atlases. The main goal of the work is aimed to answer the questions: what role do historical atlases play in an education of history, which functions of school historical atlases are used and how do teachers apply them. The work also deals with the difference of the application between teachers with combined specialization in history-geography and history-other subjects. The targets were reached by using the method of card sorting and half-structured interviews with ten teachers. The method of content analysis was applied after the evaluation of results. The research implies that the role of school historical atlases is primarily an extra tool in an education. The main functions of present-day atlases are: illustrating, informing and place orienting. The respondent teachers use school historical atlases in most cases as a basis for their lecture and group work. Nevertheless, they do not use them as homework at all. The application of school historical atlases does not differ in reliance on the teaching specialization. The usage of geoportal and combination with the second teaching subject occurs more frequently by teachers of history-geography.
The Cinematographic Work Devoted to the Holocaust in Instruction of Civics and History
Pinc, Benedikt ; Zicha, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Dvořáková, Michaela (referee)
Is the film suitable educational tool for teaching about holocaust? That is the main question and topic of the thesis. At first it im looking into general issues of holocaust in education. I'm trying to show that holocaust is not perceived only as a historical event, but as a specific demonstration of modern society in a first place. Focusing only on its historical attributes results in ignoring ethical and societal dimensions of this topic. For that i'm also suggesting that we should be teaching about holocaust not only in history, but also in civics. Further in this paper im trying to examine using film as the educational tool. I'm working here with the proposition that the film is not representing reality, but it's always just a reflexion of the reality. And as such it needs to work with the memory. Memory is constructing frames of our thinking and understanding of the world around. While using film in education, we need to keep in mind that film is a product of certain cultural memory and memory frames. This product is then retroactively helping to reinforce those memory frames which it came from. I also did some research on legislative aspects of using film in education. In the end of this paper im trying to use aforesaid statements in designing several demonstrational classes on the topic of...

Lichtenbergová, Anna-Marie ; Průchová, Andrea (advisor) ; Wolák, Radim (referee)
Film as an Educational Tool in Czech High School History Classes The master's thesis entitled Film as an Educational Tool in Czech High School History Classes is dedicated to discussing film as a didactical tool and as a source of education in history classes of Czech high schools. This thesis aims to analyze and evaluate the view Czech teachers hold towards using the filmography in their history classes while understanding the different implications of it. Secondly, the aim is to obtain commentary from experts in the field of history didactics. Those findings and results could, therefore, amend teaching program's structures and help teachers to structure their syllabus appropriately. The theoretical part of the thesis presents basic information on Czech education program and implementing History as a subject in the primary curriculum of the Ministry of Education. Then it considers the role of film theory and multimedia, which are both closely linked to the idea of the film as an educating tool in History classes. The following chapters analyze and evaluate solely the usage of the film in education and the different advantages and disadvantages it can bring. The paper's empirical part focuses on the qualitative research with Czech history teachers and experts and then finally evaluating the overall...
Reflection of the First Czechoslovak Republic in the History of Textbooks in the Second Half of the 20th Century
Brodňanská, Adéla ; Havlůjová, Hana (advisor) ; Parkan, František (referee)
This thesis deals with the image of the First Czechoslovak Republic as presented in history textbooks in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The main goal of the thesis is to reflect the approach to and transformation of the way the First Republic was depicted in the history textbooks issued between 1948 and 2004. The theoretical part of the thesis briefly outlines the development of school structure and curricular documents in the period observed as well as the transformation of historiographical production with respect to the Czechoslovak interwar history. Furthermore, the key terms are defined that are based on crucial topics and generalizations of the present-day Czech historiographical production. These terms are then studied in history textbooks in six periods matching the chronology of education reforms and subsequently analyzed in terms of explanation and interpretation methods. The final part of the thesis presents each of the observed interpretation changes in relation to the selected key terms. The greatest textbook alterations were found in connection with the change of the social and political circumstances after the fall of the Communist regime.
Mining and Minting in Kutna Hora as a Topic of Integrated Thematic Instruction in History Education in Secondary Schools
Urbanová, Petra ; Havlůjová, Hana (advisor) ; Mikeska, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis consists of theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part is devoted to the concept of integrated thematic teaching, the history of silver ore mining and coinage in Kutná Hora. The practical part presents the integrated thematic education for pupils of the secondary school, which was verified in practice at secondary school in Suchdol. The mining of silver ore and silver coinage in Kutná Hora was explained theoretically and practically to pupils. Pupils worked with school historical sources and literature relevant to the subject. Part of the practical part was a field trip to the Italian Court in Kutná Hora. In the teaching were used methods, which support brain-compatible learning according to the concept of integrated thematic teaching (for example an interview, a group work, a photography, a brainstorming, etc.). Part of the diploma thesis is also evaluation of the practical implementation of the proposal. There are reviewed not only the benefits but also the pitfalls of integrated thematic lessons.
