"Major Zeman": Comparative analysis of verbal narratives and TV serial presentations
Krausová, Martina ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Činátlová, Blanka (referee)
The diploma thesis "Major Zeman": Comparative analysis of verbal narratives and TV serial presentations deals with two narrative media that depict the Zeman's story: a literary narrative by Jiří Procházka and its realization as TV series. Factors affecting the resulting form of both versions were identified by means of a gradual analysis of each of the versions. These factors were external interventions made by a management of a TV company and by its professional advisors as well as a mutual rivality of producers of the series. A focus to a TV audience and a literary ambition of Procházka, who attempted to step over the boundaries of a crimi genre, played their roles as well. These all resulted in two differently conceived fiction worlds. The narrative world, built on a myth-building principle, appears to be coherent, joined by an unifying ideological line. On the contrary, the TV series world appears to be scattered.

The methodological approach based on the Michel Foucault's theory of the power and knowledge concurrence is used. Further, several perceptions of critical economics, sociology and political studies are also utilised. The school is considered a power. The institution of school is changing its contents and functions during the history, however, the power has been kept as its proper characteristic in any case. And as the thesis demonstrates that power is even becoming a softer and subtle one while being accordant with the current claims of global capitalism. That can be expressed by the concept of so-called "knowledge society".

Gender and Media in the Age of Post-Modernity: Revealing Gender Stereotypes in the Contemporary Czech Advertising Discourse
Olbertová, Martina ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
ENGLISH SUMMARY The main objective of this dissertation was to provide a complex perspective on the mutual relationship of gender and media in the age of post-modernity with a special attention to the stereotypical gender portrayal presented to us by the contemporary Czech advertising discourse. We chose to demonstrate this problematics through the methods of semiotic analysis on the analytical sample of 5 advertisements (consisting of selected TV commercials) representing various aspects of stereotypical gender images appearing in the today's Czech advertising contents. We then subjected these selected advertisements to analytical methods in pursuit of finding the answers to questions related to the media image of men, women and our society that the stereotypical gender depictions contained in these advertisements help to construct. Although many of these advertisements appear to be openly sexist or even misogynic on the first sight, using the mechanisms of semiotic analysis we came to a rather opposite conclusion proposing the analyzed contents are rather pro-feminine tending toward an extensive masculine critique. This result, however, is based mainly on the mechanisms of oppositional reading of the subjected texts. On the other hand, it is presumable that the "average media consumer" not having access...

Moraová, Hana ; Parkan, František (advisor) ; Havlůjová, Hana (referee)
The thesis The Reflection of the Battle of Lipany in Historiography and Textbooks focuses on the issue of historical consciousness, subconsciousness and the birth of tradition and the role that history taught at schools plays in this process. The author studies how history taught at schools reflects research and results of contemporary historians. She shows whether, how fast and to which extent the results enter history textbooks, often the only text that pupils, students and unfortunately also teachers access. The whole issue is demonstrated on the Battle of Lipany - the event often perceived by Czech historians as key for future development of the whole nation. In the introductory part the author discusses the question of historical consciousnesss and subconsciousness, Czech national myth and tradition. In the following chapters she shows how in different eras of Czech history the topic of the Battle of Lipany was approached by historiographers and how their results entered history textbooks. The author shows that in most periods this process was very slow, if any, the only exception being the Protectoral period and the period of the communist regime when the ideological line propagated by official historiography entered the textbooks very fast. Of course, this ideological interpretation was...

Spartakiad as a secular ritual
Preininger, Matouš ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Roubal, Petr (referee)
Spartakiads were mass synchronised gymnastic displays and had hundreds of thousands participants. In communist Czechoslovakia they took place every five years. In this paper I explore how they differ from and resemble to religious rituals. I based this study mainly on theories of British social anthropologists Edmund Leach and Victor Turner. The gymnasts exercising on the stadium were supposed to represent a united people and to articulate basic ideological values, most importantly joyful work and preparedness to fight for peace. The order was thus reminded to the participants of the ritual and according to this order the society was formed. Because the symbolism of the spartakiad was very general and ambiguous, it was able to unite social groups between which there was tension in everyday life. Thus it created the illusion that the society is unanimous. These characteristics allow the spartakiads to resemble religious rituals. At the same time they differ from them in an important trait. Except from expressing cultural values, religious rituals enable their questioning in a clearly defined situational context. Hence they can help the evolution of social structures. The spartakiad expresses the social order but it does not allow its critique. Therefore spartakiads conserve the status quo but have...
Western Music in the Post-1968 Czechoslovakia
Havlík, Adam ; Pullmann, Michal (advisor) ; Rákosník, Jakub (referee)
This paper addresses the peculiar topic of western music in post 1968 Czechoslovakia with emphasis on the official music scene. It shows how western music was actually treated in Czechoslovakian society and how the image of western music was shaped within the public discourse , including many significant ambiguities. It also follows various ways (legal and also illegal) in which ordinary people used to obtain foreign music records in the era of late socialism. An analysis of actual impact of western music on Czechoslovak popular music and the role of institutions within that is also present. This paper could thus be considered as a modest contribution to the social and cultural history of socialist dictatorships.
