The Czech Republic and the UK, a Eurosceptic comparison.
Gata-Aura, Navraj ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Cibulková, Petra (referee) ; Hanley, Seán (referee)
Euroscepticism has recently started to enjoy a renaissance, boasting many different works in different formats whether it be a comparative study of two European countries or, investigating Euroscepticism in different national contexts to account for possible variations of Euroscepticism. This work aims to show the contrary. Using country case studies of the Czech Republic and the UK this paper shows that regardless of temporal differences and differences in national contexts, Euroscepticism is intrinsically linked to some lines of argument concerning economy and democracy.
Media presentment of the president Vaclav Klaus`s term on pages of Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny
Křapka, David ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Novotný, David Jan (referee)
The main goal of my thesis will be to find, how two significant dailies - Hospodářské noviny and Lidové noviny, reported about Václav Klaus's whole term. The thesis is based on the media theory like theory of gatekeeping or theory of agenda-setting and on the biography of Václav Klaus. There is a system of hypotheses that are asking questions which are needed for the study of stereotypes, for the following of the periodicity of titles with president's name on them, or for the meaning of the specific articles. For that I will be using Newton Media database. On the end of the thesis I should find out whether there is media bias towards Václav Klaus in his term. And I also hope that I would be able to evaluate objectivity of these studied dailies.

Articles that contained the keyword amnesty, belonged to the period under review, published in the selected newspapers and for which Anopress database assessed score of at least 90 % were included as a part of the final data collection. After eliminating duplicated and irrelevant articles, 448 units remained and these were subsequently analyzed by the quantitative content analysis. The work itself was divided into several parts, which gave to the analysis a final "form". In the first, theoretical part, were briefly mentioned basic theoretical approaches related to the research. The second part presented a practical section that put the event in the sufficient context. The methodological part outlined steps of the content analysis and also defined the main and subsidiary research questions and relevant hypotheses. Finally, in the last, fourth - analytical, part were answered partial research questions and answers...

Křapka, David ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Novotný, David Jan (referee)
The main purpose of my bachelor thesis "Media presentment of the president Vaclav Klaus's second term on pages of Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny" is to find out how was the former president presented in newspapers Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny. The thesis is greatly focused on the Vaclav Klaus itself and I wanted occurrences of his second term to be further connected with historical context. Media analysis itself is not focused only on the Vaclav Klaus but also on the possible impartiality of these two newspapers while they are informing about him. Final output then will be complex media image of the Vaclav Klaus and judgment about the editors of both Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny.
Comparison of acceptance and ratification of Lisabon treaty in Czech republic and in Slovakia
Müller, Joseph ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The main goal of my work is to determine which factors were the most important in process of ratification of Treaty of Lisbon in Czech Republic and in Slovakia. The lenght and the complexity of ratification were quite different in both countries. My work is based on concept saying that foreign policy of Czech Republic and Slovakia was given by domestic and foreign policy factors.1 In Slovakia it was mainly the determination to change suverenistic foreign policy of former prime ministr Vladimír Mečiar. On the other hand in Czech Republic politics were convinced that Czech Republic belongs to Europe and so they can dare to criticize EU's decisions. After analysis of stances of all important political parties in both countries, I can conclude, that concept I am using, is applicable also to the process of ratification, and therefore it was also the main reasons of different lenght and complexity of ratification. 1 Petr Drulák, Michal Kořan a Jan Růžička, "Außenpolitik in Ostmitteleuropa", Osteuropa 58 (červenec 2008): 139-152.

Picková, Zuzana ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Trampota, Tomáš (referee)
Presidents are said to exert their influence mainly through addressing the public and public speaking. Setting the media agenda is considered as one of the presidents' main strategic powers. Although the contemporary Czech president Václav Klaus enjoys substantial media attention, it is not granted that the media report on everything he says and emphasises. This research focuses on the interaction between presidential speeches at important occasions, represented by the 1 January, 28 October, and 17 November address, and the media represented by three nation-wide dailies Mladá fronta DNES, Právo and Blesk. The time span of the research is 2007 to 2011. The analysis seeks to examine how often were the presidential speeches reported by the media, and which particular topics from them generated press coverage. The results show that the media were mostly attracted by the 1 January address, while the 17 November speech received least attention. It has also emerged that the media reporters have been choosing selectively which topics from the speeches to cover. The scope of the space dedicated to each of the topics by the president in his speeches has not been reflected by the journalists. Therefore, significant differences in the topical priorities between the presidential and media agenda were...

Diploma thesis "Husák, Havel, Klaus: New Year's speeches of prezidents in time changes" deals with the traditional New Year's speeches of the last three Czech and Czechoslovak presidents Gusáv Husák, Václav Havel and Václav Klaus. It compares them in the terms of rhetoric and pragmatic linguistic, focusing on their structure, style and applied topics. It also monitors whether and how the presidents in their festive speeches responded and referred to each other. The aim of the thesis is to find out how the presidential New Year's speeches reflected personal experience of the speakers and the circumstances under which these festive speeches were formed. A view behind the scenes of the New Year's speeches is to be revealed by a short survey among the closest associates of presidents. The thesis follows the festive presidents speeches in written form, does not deal with their television or radio appearances. It also contains biographical data of all three heads of the state, with emphasis on their rhetorical skills and experience. Part of the work is also devoted to the history and systematic classification of New Year's presidential speeches in general.
