Narratives and Religion: Particularities and Functions of Narration in Religious Context

The aim of this thesis is to analyse certain aspects connecting religion and narration (which is understood here as a common human faculty to think and express oneself in the form of narratives). The first part of the thesis is concerned with methodology; first of all, the issues of defining narrative are introduced and a more elaborate definition is presented. A complete methodology is then formulated with a help of several authors (mainly James W. Pennebaker and Mary Douglas) in order to distinguish particularities and functions of creating narratives in religious contexts. Two main points are stressed here: that the content of the narratives is often concerned with problematic aspects of experience and that the expression of these narratives is beneficial for their creators. The second part focuses on several religious institutions concerned with creation of narratives which are interpreted with the outlined methodology. In this manner, the act of confession in Catholicism, prayer in Christianity and certain healing rituals are described and interpreted. Conclusions of this thesis should help the reader get a basic idea of the way created narratives in religious contexts affect their authors.
Ladislav Hejdánek's conceptual thought in the context of Husserl's phenomenology

This thesis deals with the notion of conceptual thought as developed by the Czech philosopher, Ladislav Hejdánek, within the referential framework of Husserl's phenomenology. The aim of the thesis is to thoroughly reconstruct the points of departure and basic motifs of Hejdánek's concept, since the reflection of conceptual thought is one of the milestones of Hejdánek's critical thinking, which has not yet been systematically worked out by Hejdánek or anyone else. Hejdánek is interpreted here mainly in the context of Husserl's noematic theory of meaning, enabling us to view Hejdánek through the predicates of a philosophical mainstream as well as to explore some of the problematic points of Husserl's thought processes that are not usually noticed and which have been approached creatively by Hejdánek from an unexpected perspective. The first two chapters present a preliminary overview of Husserl's philosophy (from his Göttingen period in particular), drawing on in-depth research into Husserl's manuscripts carried out by Petr Urban. Jiří Dynda Byliny of bogatyr Svyatogor: Structural and Comparative Analysis of Narrative (MA Thesis) Abstract This thesis is an analysis and interpretation of the thirty seven textual variants of the byliny of bogatyr Svyatogor. After the general introduction to the Russian folk epics and after the presentation of issues concerning the study of oral epic literature, author's own structural concept of myth and cultural representations is presented. In the central part the thesis attempts to apply these principles to the narrative of the byliny of Svyatogor and by means of a thorough analysis it indicates, which motives and their relations were fundamental for this narrative to make sense in the local context of bylinaic tradition. The thesis claims that these narratives primarily deal with the themes of the initiation of a young hero, the generation conflict and the transmission of a mentor's position to his apprentice (or, metaphorically, a father's position to his son). Mass and Crowd. Multiplicity in works by Ivan Kafka

I have paid attention to artworks of Ivan Kafka especially to the problem of multiplicity. On the background of the reseach of Kafka's work I have described some aspects of his art work in more common way: dealing with time, with space and with multiplicity. I have shortly analyzed first two aspects. On the other hand is multiplicity much wider phenomena, I have defined with categories which were created specially for this work. The category of mass is defined by non-living unifique parts of one coplex without any autonomy. The second type labeled as crowd type, typically contains some level of individuality. On such background I tried to create a diagramatic structure, which was postulated according to Rolasind Krauss'es "expanded fields". This should better show the relations between terms like mass, crowd, seriality and serial type of multiplicity. I have also applied these categories on particular Ivan Kafka's artworks, but in the end I suggest to asser this system of multiplicity categories on other artists artworks as well.
Psychological aspects of narration in mediacontens

The topic of narration in media contents is the main subject of my thesis. Psychological findings related to use of media, and television in particular, are contemplated. Myth which is examined from a psychological perspective represents the key topic of my thesis. The myth is compared to a fairytale as it embodies archetypal patterns of a human mind. In the thesis, first, the theoretical frames of naratology, semiotics, psychology and media studies are described. Second, my findings are used for a practical demonstration of a semiotic analysis of selected media messages: commercial, fairytale and news. Categories of cognition, emotion and motivation are used for considering the psychological aspects. Furthermore, deeper structures of human psyche and subconscious processes are stressed. The main objective of the thesis is to provide deeper understanding of mental operations while being exposed to media contents which utilize components of narration and myth. The topic of this thesis is complex; therefore, I have presented findings from disciplines mentioned above coherently. The thesis is, hence, a sectional essay offering integrated findings from multiple disciplines.
The relationship between a computer game and its audiovisual pattern

Diploma thesis The Relationship between the Computer Game and its Audiovisual Pattern deals with the similarities and differences between the computer games and audiovisual works. The thesis presents some theories reflecting different points of view to the influence and blending of these media forms. Those theories are the base for a suggestion of typology of games and movies adaptations that were made according to a pattern. In each of three suggested categories, there are mentioned some particular examples of computer games that were inspired by movie or series and also examples of movies that were inspired by computer game. The final chapter is a case study which compares the computer game Lost: Via Domus to its audiovisual pattern - series Lost.
Origins of the Czech and Slovak Digital Narrativity: The History of Text Computer Games in Czechoslovakia

The present diploma work describes the early development of digital narrative on the territory of the former Czechoslovakia in the 80's and at the beginning of the 90's of the 20th century. In that period, the text adventure game production and use were influenced by the socio-cultural and economic environment in the east-European Communist bloc, and by its following transformation into a democratic system with market economy. That brought about unique approaches to the computer game development and playing, and it also led to a formation of a cultural phenomenon of digital text games connected with the context of that time. The text deals with a brief historic development of digital game playing in the world, and a general situation in the information technologies on the territory of the former Czechoslovakia including direct participants' selected opinions. Within the framework of the present work, basic theoretical approaches have been presented, examining the adventure games genre, and especially their narrative part and the principles of intertextuality. The latter have been described using the examples of the respective Czechoslovak game production.

The rise of new media, occurring hand in hand with digitality, interactivity and hypertext, enriched not only our media understanding generally, but also introduced to us, as readers, a brand new genre--electronic literature. Approaching electronic literature with a previous knowledge of classic, print literature, readers are familiarized with completely new textual experiences via its genres, similarly as with a new approach to narrative. Interactive narrative has become one of the classic genres of electronic literature. Born in the 1970s and developed further in the 1980s within videogames and computer games, it has shifted to the electronic literature area. The submitted State Doctoral Thesis is dedicated to the phenomenon of interactive narrative as a genre of the electronic literature. Hereinafter, interactive narrative is introduced from the broader perspective, including its origin, development and specific forms.
Who are we and who are we becoming within social network sites?

The presented thesis aims to analyze the impact of social networking sites (SNS) in shaping our identity. Especially in the context of changes in everyday life caused by significant increase of SNS users. Unlike previous forms of online identity the identity of SNS users is anchored in the reality. Therefore our identity performance in this environment is closely tied to our real identity and real social network. Part of the thesis describe the influence of real social network on our lives, particularly the strong of weak ties is discussed. The analysis is focused on the processes and forms in which is our identity constructed and manifested within social networking sites. Detailed consideration is aimed on narrative and fragmentary characteristics of such identity. Also the consequences of total indexing of user-generated content and its persistent features are examined. This topic is followed by setting the framework of reputation management and protection of personal data. The findings of research present the forms of user identity on Facebook, the use of privacy settings and in particular the importance of the size of the networks of friends. The relationship between socialization in SNS and in the real world is described.
