Ulipová, Jana ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the magazine "Širým světem", which was managed by Stanislav Nikolau (1878-1950), a prominent figure in the public life of the First Czechoslovak Republic. Based on a historical analysis of primary sources, placed in context by the study of secondary literature, it completes Nikolau's personality including his views orientation that is based on the ideas of the nationalist right-wing, with a strong anti-Communist orientation, through the leadership of the Czech fascist movement Vlajka to the anti-Semitic rhetoric. The thesis presents his rich activity in the pedagogical, journalistic, and editorial field and does not omit his professional work that was always closely intertwined with geography. However, it is an analysis of the non-fictional periodical "Širým světem. The Geographical Magazine", founded by Nikolau for young readers in 1924 that is the core of the thesis. The magatine's content also corresponded to that − it included adventure stories, short stories and original travel reports that − in addition to the resilience of the human spirit − also reflected the diversity of geographical conditions especially on non-European continents. It continued to develop and change in the context of Nikolau's preferences, reflecting the growing interest of the reading public...

Levenstam, Vasily ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Gomes Lapa, Tiago (referee)
This study examines the characteristics and purposes of propaganda narratives employed in the media coverage of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Through a content analysis of 89 articles from three Russian media outlets, namely governmental, affiliated with the government, and free-non-governmental, the study aims to shed light on the nature and objectives of these narratives. By employing comparative analysis and coding techniques, the research identifies and describes the propaganda narratives present in the articles, providing real-life examples to illustrate their usage. The major findings reveal the presence of both strategic and tactical propaganda narratives, with distinct characteristics and goals. The study contributes to understanding the role of propaganda in shaping public perception and offers insights into the dynamics of information dissemination during conflict situations. The conclusions highlight the need to differentiate between journalism and propaganda and emphasize the significance of media ownership and proximity to the government in influencing the utilization of propaganda narratives.

Issues in British-American relations: the Falklands War
Podolková, Klára ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
Diploma thesis Issues in British-American relations: the Falklands War deals with the special relationship between Great Britain and the United States and analyses in particular relations between their leading political figures - American president Ronald Raegan and British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether the special relationship played any role during the Falkland Islands War in 1982. The theoretical part is focused on the search for a definition of the term special relationship. I found different definitions of special relationship, but no universal one exists. The thesis operates with the definition of John Dumbrell, who says that the special relationship existed, specifically during the Cold War. The analytical part examines British-American cooperation during the above-mentioned conflict and the role of the United States as a mediator. The diploma thesis concludes that the special relationship played a role in the Falkland Islands War. It was reflected in the two countries' military, satellite, and intelligence cooperation. Even the personal relationship between Reagan and Thatcher confirmed the existence of a special relationship. The role of the US as a mediator was criticized as it proved to be non-neutral. Also, it was concluded that the...
David and Goliath: Aspects of Air Warfare in the China-Taiwan Confrontation
Maxa, Jaroslav ; Kofroň, Jan (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
The prospect of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan and the impact it would have on the region has been a subject of concern for many years. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the potential outcome of air warfare in such an event, focusing on changes in Chinese and Taiwanese military capabilities over time. Drawing on previous RAND Corporation research published over the past two decades, this thesis examined two aspects of a potential Chinese invasion, the possibility of a disarming strike against Taiwanese air defenses and air bases, and the possible outcome of air warfare. To accomplish this, the critical variables from previous studies were examined and the development of their values was assessed through a mixture of quantitative and qualitative analysis. The thesis finds that China currently has the upper hand in military capabilities, making it unlikely that Taiwan could sustain a full-scale air war without U.S. support. The study also discusses possible future developments in the contest for air superiority over Taiwan in the next decade and offers policy implications for Taiwan to maintain close ties with its allies and invest in its military capabilities, especially air defense.
Strengthened by Sirens
Nikitina, Pavla ; Horáková, Jana (referee) ; Medek, Tomáš (advisor)
The diploma thesis "Hardened by Sirens" focuses on telling stories through sculptural realisation. These stories are taken from the new phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war that started in 2022. I created the sculptures based on 3D scans as a reportage of events caused by the war. In my work, I followed up on an earlier sculptural project-study entitled "5 Minutes", which was created in 2019 in the context of my bachelor’s studies at FFA BUT. The sub-heading to the study read "3D war reportage ". In the textual part of the master’s thesis, I also focus on the concept of 3D reportage and the various possibilities it offers me as an artist working on the border of the genre of reportage and social documentary.
