Church politics of the Communist Party and the State in the North-eastern Bohemia during 1945-1960

Jan Kafka: Religious Policy of the Communist Party and the State in North-East Bohemia in years 1948-1960 Zkrácená anotace v anglickém jazyce The presented thesis surveys the development and forms of religious policy of the state in the region of North-East Bohemia. The study analyzes the role of the individual state institutions and security forces, in particular it pays attention to the role of the Church Departments at the National Committees (i.e. the Secretaires of Church Affairs). The thesis also examines the response of individual churches to the state policy and describes the strategies and positions held by church leaders (eg. catholic bishop Mořic Pícha), priests, monks and nuns. We also study the influence of government policy on relations among individual churches.

The returns of Volhynian Czechs and their assimilation, with special regard to the Vyškov region

In the mid and late-19th century, about 15,000 Czechs left for Russia in search of a new life. Most of them settled in the Volhynia Governorate. They bought land, established Czech villages, developed hop growing. In World War I they supported the foundation of the Czechoslovak legions, and many of them also joined the legions. After this war, several hundred Czechs returned to their homeland. In World War II, they rejoined the resistance and formed the foundation of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps. After the war, most of them claimed re-emigration. The Czechs in Volhynia experienced what Soviet communism was like, as well as persecution, collectivization, and also Ukrainian nationalism. However, returning to the homeland was not easy, and their repatriation was accompanied by many difficulties. Many of them disagreed with the incoming communist regime and warned the population of Czechoslovakia against it. A big number of Volhynian Czechs were kept under surveillance and imprisoned by the communist regime. Love for the country and hard work have always been significant in the history of Volhynian Czechs.

Communist regime propaganda against the Catholic church in Czechoslovakia

in English This paper describes the development of relationship between catholic church and communist regime in Czechoslovakia from the start of communist reign to the Velvet Revolution. Author focuses on communist persecution against the catholic church and on the propaganda of this persecution in media. Special attention is dedicated to describing the context of the clash between these two ideologies in the history of Czechoslovakia so that this paper can give the most accurate picture of the practices of communist regime. The first part is focused on era from the end of second world war to the year 1968, giving the most attention to era 1948-1953, a period that contained the most persecution. The second part tells the story of the normalization period from the Warsaw Pact invasion to Czechoslovakia in 1968 to the Velvet revolution, in which the catholic church played a significant role.

Antonie Hofman's life and work

Antonie Hofman's life and work The thesis will deal with by a remarkable personality of the franciscan terciary Antonie Hofman, who, as an example of his life and his literary work, still has something to say today. Her life is a testimony of personal bravery, modesty, but also of christian joy and the endless human strength and will resulting of solid faith in God. The content of the thesis will be the chronological breakdown of the individual phases of her life, which is crucial for understanding not only her life mission, but also her literary work. In addition, the work will list the publications she has written, with a brief evaluation. Attention is also paid to the catholic movement jocism, which was promoted by Antonie Hofman The work will also note Antonie Hofman's franciscan spirituality, which has shaped her life and work and which she has been able to master in the practice of everyday, often hard life.

Augustin Komanec (1885-1953)

This thesis deals with the life story of Augustin Komanec, dean of Slaný, a man standing among many other anonymous priests who were persecuted for their firm human and Christian attitudes towards the Church and its bishops in the early 1950's. Augustin Komanec was one of those tried by the totalitarian communist regime in fabricated trials. He was not sentenced to death, nevertheless the stiffness of the punishment led to the ultimate sacrifice. He died soon after he had been sent to the communist prison in Mírov. Based on documents available, the work presents Komanec's both civil and clerical life from 1885 to 1948 and then from the communist coup to his death in 1953. The aim of the work is to present the destiny of this brave person, who refused to give in to the totalitarian power and who represented the real enemy of this power: the Church, courageous and free.

The Číhošť Miracle as a Theme and a Tool of Communist Propaganda

The bachelor thesis called The Číhošť Miracle as a Theme and a Tool of Communist Propaganda deals with the usage of propaganda in the campaign against so called miracle in Číhošť which was led in the 50s of the 20th century by the Communist Party of the Czechoslovakia. In the first part this thesis presents the theoretical basic for the analysis carried out in the research part. There is introduced the theory of totalitarianism which is essential to capture the mood at that time and the conditions in the Czechoslovakian society, and subsequently the theory of propaganda as the instrument inherently connected with the totalitarian regimes. To the perfect illustration this thesis later proposes the concrete context of the 50s in the Czechoslovakia where the key element was the rise of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia to the power and its relationship with the Catholic Church. The Číhošť Miracle itself is analyzed separately where there is chiefly introduced its process as well as its consequences for the Parson Josef Toufar and the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The second part is practical and based on the methodological inclusion and the presented theory there is an ongoing analysis of the historical sources. Doctoral Dissertation PhDr. Kathleen Brenda Geaney English-Speaking Communists, Communist Sympathizers and Fellow- Travellers and Czechoslovakia in the Early Cold War (Anglicky mluvící komunisté, komunističtí sympatizanti a podporovatelé a Československo v počátcích studené války) Abstract The dissertation is a study of some of those people with Communist Party affiliations and fellow-travellers, who journeyed behind the Iron Curtain to see for themselves what life was like in the new people's democracy. The research focuses on Czechoslovakia as a tourist destination for a surprising number of anglophones in the early years of the Cold War. It argues that Soviet experience served as a best practices model for officialdom in Prague. This was modified where necessary to take into account the lessons learnt, national particulars, and the new geopolitical context. In both situations, foreigners were evaluated in terms of importance and potential as far as the communist cause was concerned.
