The main objektive of my thesis is a knowledge of social environment of prague district Karlín, one of the most dynamic part of inner Prague, which is undergoing a transformation of a physical, funcional and social structure. The concept of social environment is used in this work, whereby the social environment is consisted of a social structure and a social climate of a locality. By an analyse of the social, physical and funcional structure and a research of daily rhythms it tries to identify main pacemakers, to deeply learn about proceses and key moments during the day, which structurated the locality, and to capture social groups of users of the locality. The research is focused on three selected basic administrative units: 'Karlín - západ', 'Rohanský ostrov' and 'Za Invalidovnou'. Each of these localities has its own daily rhythm, which is structurated by the resident population and the temporarily present population, and different social environments, which influence each other, are dependent on each other and create the whole character of the prague district Karlín.The work tries to deepen and criticaly evaluate a current metodology. Keywords Karlín, Prague, social environment, social climate, social structure, daily rhythm, pacemaker, locality, mobility, time geography.
Inner Peripheries of contemporary Prague in the archives documents - trends and sonds
Nedbalová, Zuzana ; Semotanová, Eva (advisor) ; Novotný, Michal (referee)
This diploma thesis, entitled Inner Peripheries of contemporary Prague in the archives documents - trends and sonds, deals with changes originally separated urban areas located outside Prague, which went through significant transformations during last 150 years. For this thesis three studies were selected: city districts Karlín, Libeň and Vysočany. All three peripheries were originally separated areas of rural type which were located near centre of Prague. With the arrival of industry in the middle of 19th Century they turned into heavily industrial areas, in the beginning of 20th Century merged with the capital city, thus creating Great Prague. Many changes took place also with river Vltava regulations. During last 25 years the capital city is being modernized. This modernization is connected with additional changes in peripheries: old and unused factories are demolished and new buildings are built on their places or they are converted for other purposes. Because of this there are another impacts on the surrounding landscape. This issue also concerns industrial herritage: its main purpose is preservation and protection of former industrial buildings. The main goal of this thesis is description of these changes and their impact on the landscape with using maps, pictorial and written sources.
The Transformation of Karlin in the context of Marc Auge's theory of non-places
Šmídová, Markéta ; Váša, Ondřej (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with the most dynamically evolving Prague district Karlin. In the context of the theory of Marc Augé about non-places, it primarily addresses the transformation of Karlin after the floods in 2002 and its consequences. For easier orientation in this area it is at first outlined the theory of Marc Augé and the history of Karlin. It is followed by the practical part, which refers to the production of non- places. Against the backdrop of the industrial heritage it refers to the conversion of industrial buildings and the creation of new administrative centers that show signs of non-places. Construction of new office centers started the process of new development of Karlin. The nature of this process and the direction Karlin is moving , is presented with concrete examples. I note in particular the changes in the structure of newly opened businesses - shops and catering facilities . In the last part of the thesis I mention the typical expression of non-place in Karlin - the underground and its surroundings. The aim is to point out that the conversion of Karlin relates to the production of non- places. Keywords : conversion, industrial buildings, Karlin, Marc Augé, non-places, office buildings, office centers, underground.
Invalidovna in Prague
Turková, Kateřina ; Pučalík, Marek (advisor) ; Oulíková, Petra (referee)
This bachelor thesis "Invalidovna in Prague" focuses on the building of Invalidovna in Prague which was meant to be an imitation of Hôtel des Invalides in Paris. Invalidovna was situated far from Prague at the time of its construction. Today Karlín is a part of the inner Prague, however only few Prague inhabitants know or have visited Invalidovna. The importance of the building, to which has never been dedicated an extensive monograph, is obvious when we know, that for the realization was hired Kilian Ignac Dientzenhofer. This work tries to evaluate the building from the artistic perspective and also according to the context of the time. The first part of the paper concentrates on Špitálsko - presently Karlín, on which lands is Invalidovna built. The next part focuses on hospitals for retired soldiers in general. The aim is also to evaluate the Prague realization in the context of similar projects in Europe. The most extensive part of the work is devoted to the circumstances of construction which has never been implemented as planned, to its development and especially to the architectural description. The final part follows the history of Invalidovna and the transformation of its appearance and function to the present.
Railway Vysočany - Těšnov;commencement, progress, downfall
Balák, Ondřej ; Pokorný, Jiří (advisor) ; Šindelář, Jan (referee)
The aim of the present thesis is to describe the origin, evolution and decline of the end section of the railway line Vysočany-Těšnov. In more general terms it provides an introduction into the construction of the railway lines at the end of the 19th century in Prague, records specific preparatory and construction works in the section of Vysočany-Těšnov, and briefly informs on the issue of passenger and freight transport on this line. Railroad buildings and other structures which have been connected with the above line, as well as some of those which have survived to the present are analysed within the thesis. The final chapter focuses on the question of the destruction of the Těšnov railway station building. Another approach to this issue is an attempt to compare the conditions of the railway body and its surroundings at the time of the operation and at present. To this end, period and present-day maps were employed, in addition to the field research carried out on the still preserved remaining parts of the railway line.

Important sources to compile this thesis were The Chronicle of Karlín and its parish church, The Records of The Union for the decoration of the church of St. Cyril and Method in Prague-Karlín and architectural projects. Recent restoration of the church is the main theme of this publication: Karlín. Chrám sv.
