Humans of Lusanja. Anthropological study of development cooperation in Uganda.
Havlová, Nikola ; Soukup, Václav (advisor) ; Půtová, Barbora (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on the development cooperation and implementation of projects in local cultures using example of Ugandan community from the Lusanja village. The aim of this thesis is to describe the impact of development cooperation on the community and its expectations, to map the dialogue among the various actors of the project and to provide feedback to the Western non-profit organizations from the local culture. Based on field research conducted using ethnographic methods, the thesis brings an emic perspective of the local community to the Western idea of development cooperation. The emic perspective is mostly omitted from the development discourse, eventhough it could significantly affect the sustainability of implemented projects in developing countries. The thesis also covers the daily life of the Lusanja people. Key words: development cooperation, local community, NGOs, Uganda, sustainable development, ethnographic research
Development cooperation as a foreign policy instrument: EU vs. China in Africa
Kreidl, Dominik ; Knutelská, Viera (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The main topic of this thesis is the use of development cooperation as an instrument of foreign policy of the People's Republic of China (China) and the European Union (EU) in Africa. The aim of this diploma thesis was to find out whether the development cooperation policy of China, respectively the EU with African countries, is motivated rather by pragmatic or normative interests. In order to answer this research question, a qualitative content analysis was applied, in which the documents of these two actors were examined. The main theoretical concept of this diploma thesis is the concept of normative power, which served as an indicator of normative interests. In the case of the EU, the hypothesis that the EU would primarily act as a normative power in development cooperation, i.e. that it would be interested in disseminating its norms in the international system, has not been confirmed. The results of the content analysis reveal that pragmatic interests prevail in the development cooperation between the EU and African countries. In the case of China's involvement in development cooperation, the results of the analysis reveal that the main motivations within this policy are mainly normative interests, i.e. the interests of disseminating its norms in the international politics.
The Contribution of Schweitzer's Thoughts in Humanitarian and Development Aid
Kowalová, Lenka ; Širka, Zdenko (advisor) ; Zámečník, Jan (referee)
The title of this thesis is "The Contribution of Schweitzer's Thoughts in Humanitarian and Development Aid". The main aim of the thesis is to present the contribution of Schweitzer's ideas that are valuable for the area of humanitarian and development aid. The concrete examples of aid in Ethiopia provided by humanitarian organizations today show the practical impact of Schweitzer's ideas. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter describes a life and work of Albert Schweitzer. In the second chapter, attention is drawn to his ethical concept of reverence for life. The following chapter entitled Humanitarian and Development Aid in Ethiopia is divided into three smaller chapters. In the first one, the terms of humanitarian and development aid are defined. In the second one, the country of Ethiopia is described and its living conditions. This chapter is followed by the last section which presents the humanitarian organizations operating in Ethiopia and their work there. The biggest organization is People in Need, the next two are organizations with spiritual impact, the Endowment Fund Nehemia and the Exodus Association. I have chosen the aspect of spiritual impact because Albert Schweitzer was a Christian and his belief influenced his decision-making and work throughout his life. The...
The Rise of China and its Implications for Western Development Cooperation Policy
Ertürk, Saadet ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
Bibliographic note Ertürk, Saadet (2019). The Rise of China and its Implications for Western Development Cooperation Policy. Master Thesis. Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Political Studies, Supervisors: Dr. Michal Parízek & Dr. Sebastian Ziaja. Abstract Recently new donors are beginning to challenge the international aid architecture of traditional Western donors by providing huge amounts of foreign aid to Sub-Sahara African (SSA) countries without political conditions attached, thereby undermining the bargaining power and influence of OECD DAC donors. Especially Chinas new role as aid donor causes a lot of scepticism among researchers. This master thesis investigates whether OECD DAC donors changed their aid allocation policies and patterns in response to rising Chinese foreign aid activities in SSA countries. So far, the literature investigating the relationship between foreign aid provided by traditional Western donors and aid by the Chinese government has been limited mostly due to the lack of accurate data on Chinese foreign aid. This study makes use of a new dataset on Chinese foreign aid flows in order to examine the response of OECD DAC donors to Chinese foreign aid activities in SSA between 2000 to 2014. It finds that contrary to current assumptions OECD DAC donors do...
Partnership in Development - A case study of USAID and Sida
Zemanová, Nikola ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of partnership in development cooperation. In particular, partnerships between development cooperation providers are nowadays being discussed very often, as this type of partnership is playing an increasingly important role in achieving global goals. However, the ambiguity of the concept remains a problem, which is reflected in the uncertainty of translating the theoretical engagements resulting from the partnership into practice. The bachelor thesis examines the issue of partnership between development co-providers at the theoretical level, and contains a case study to provide answers to questions about the importance and possible need to conclude international partnerships. The case study is based on two major development agencies: USAID (International Agency for International Development) and Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) whose Power Africa Partnership established a successful Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia project exploration. The Power Africa initiative is basically one of the largest public-private partnerships in the history of development cooperation.
Bicy-colonization: A symmetrical ethnography of the development project Kola pro Afriku (Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools)
Werner, Jan ; Stöckelová, Tereza (advisor) ; Brož, Luděk (referee)
This study is a symmetrical ethnography of the Czech development project Kola pro Afriku (Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools), which involves the collection, repairs, modification and shipment of old Czech bicycles to The Gambia. Once there, they are distributed to partner schools and offered to communing pupils. In my research, I mainly focus on the pivotal technology of the project, bicycles, and their performances. Drawing on classic ethnographies of development and (most importantly) on studies based on the actor-network theory (ANT), I gradually explore the bike collection process, their modifications and repairs, their shipment to The Gambia and their local operations. When doing so, I focus on the social topology of the bicycles and its transformations in the timespace. In this regard, the bicycles gradually appear as junk (i.e. a dysfunctional relict of stabilized networks), as a fluid collectivity and as individually fluid. Thereby, this study shows that technology transfers may lead not only to changes in the set of relations, of which the given object consists, but in the very modes, in which those relations arise. It is precisely these topological transformations that significantly contribute to the functioning of the project Kola pro Afriku. Key words: development cooperation,...
Gender Mainstreaming in Bilateral Projects of the Czech Development Cooperation
Lacinová, Radka ; Horký-Hlucháň , Ondřej (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
This work is based on the analysis of documents and conducted interviews with the aim to evaluate how and to what extent the Czech bilateral development projects reflect gender. It is crucial for an assessment how gender is reflected at the various stages of the project cycle. The research is framed by the twin-track approach according to which gender is mainstreamed and also projects focused on women's empowerment are carried out. To evaluate the research question the methodology proposed by Caroline Moser (2005) is used, which also evaluates the conceptual setting and institutional settings, making comprehensive analysis of gender issue possible. The paper examines two cases, namely projects under the auspices of the Czech Development Agency implemented in the period from 2010 to 2014 in the sector of water and sanitation in Ethiopia and in the health sector in Georgia. It was found through the research that gender is reflected formally in development projects. Formal consideration is a manifestation of the efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic to reflect gender issues in the context of international development cooperation. However, there is still a lack of a systematic approach, under which there would be designed sufficient capacities, standardized procedures, clear...
A Reflection of Capacity Development Concept in the Czech Development Cooperation Programme in Higher Education and Research - A Georgia Case Study
Ditrych Lenc, Michaela ; Kopečný, Ondřej (advisor) ; Kohoutek, Jan (referee)
CHARLES UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of Sociological Studies Department of Public and Social Policy Michaela Ditrych Lenc A Reflection of Capacity Development Concept in the Czech Development Cooperation Programme in Higher Education and Research - A Georgia Case Study Master's Thesis Prague 2017 Abstract The Master's thesis is concerned with a recently launched policy instrument called the programme placement of Czech students to developing countries whose aim is to enhance quality of higher education and research in Czech Republic's partner countries in the South. The programme, implemented in the framework of the Czech development policy, was introduced in 2012 as a complement modality to the government scholarship programme. The main aim of the thesis was to identify if the project implemented in Georgia within the programme placement had contributed to capacity development in higher education and research in that region. Based on the capacity development concept it was ascertained that the project had promoted development mainly of individual capacities and to a certain extent of organisational capacities as well. Even though the system level was taken into consideration during the implementation, significant system change has not been identified. Additionally, the project...
EU development assistance and the ACP countries. EU's approach to Rwanda, Haiti, and East Timor
Pavelková, Kristina ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The work looks at EU's development policy through the lens of one of integration theories, namely multi-level governance. The relationship between the EU and three countries from ACP group, Rwanda, Haiti and East Timor is being analysed. From current trends of multi-level governance the research is focusing on the process of strengthening of supranational level and on advancing regionalization, understood in terms of regional integration on one side and the transfer of powers to lower administrative units or local emancipation. The work is inspired by the idea of the author Martin Holland that integration theories are better observable on EU's development policy than on EU's integration itself. Using the comparison of official EU's declarations over development cooperation with ACP group and real agenda implemented in those countries, the work investigates EU's involvement during penetration of surveyed countries into transnational structures, into regional coalitions and the promotion of emancipation of lower administrative units in the country. The research aims to analyze bonds formed between the European Union and Rwanda, Haiti and East Timor, which, according to Martin Holland, the concept of multi-level governance should best describe.
