Portrayal and function of space in literary and film versions of the 60's wave texts. (Cremator. Diamonds of the Night. Closely Watched Trains)

The thesis deals with the portrayal and function of space in literary and film versions of the 60's wave texts - the Cremator and Diamonds of the Night. The first chapter is concerned with works of autors, who focused between 1945 - 1968 on the second World war literature. Then the thesis tries to describe shortly the issue of portrayal of space in the literature and film adaptations. The folowing chapters focuse directly on the comparison of space in the two selected works. The aim of this thesis is to find out and to describe differences between portrayal of the spaces via literary and film instruments. The failure of the New Left in the US: the case of SDS

This thesis The Failure of the New Left in the US: The Case of SDS analyzes the causes and reasons of the failure of the New Left in the United States. The left-leaning students who were discontent with the social order and reality of the country gathered under the idea of participatory democracy in a group called Students for a Democratic Society. Their aim was to change and improve the system through universities being agents of social change, thus making a clear difference with the Old Left. The worker no longer stood in the center of social progress, but the student did. SDS promptly plunged into several burning issues of the era, such as civil rights movement and inferior position of the blacks and poor in the society. The Vietnam War and antiwar protest movement have also been great issues in which SDSers directed their energy. As the Vietnam War escalated in terms of American soldiers being sent overseas, the intensity of student protests grew as well. Inevitably SDS resorted to usage of violent means of expressing dissent and clashed with the forces of the establishment. The thesis seeks to answer what reasons, events and realities led them to finally adopting revolutionary Marxism as their flag ideology. Soon after that SDS broke up and its once great influence waned away.

Czechoslovakia as a Mediator of the Soviet Bloc in the Congo Crisis 1960-1963

The presented dissertation analyses the role of Communist Czechoslovakia in a period of so called "Congo Crisis" in the years 1960-1963, which began after the independence of the Belgian Congo had been declared. Czechoslovakia was the only Eastern Bloc country which had a representative office in the capital city of Leopoldville over a long period of time and had maintained business and diplomatic relations with the former Belgian Congo since the First Republic; therefore it was an irreplaceable mediator between the newly declared Republic of the Congo and Eastern Bloc countries. The individual chapters rely especially on archival documents and analyse the roles of Patrice Lumumba, UN, separatist government of Antoine Gizenga in the Eastern province, namely in the context of Czechoslovakian foreign policy toward African continent in the observed period. The dissertation is grounded especially on documents of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and archives of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In order to set the dissertation to the international context, it was mainly French, Belgian and Soviet literature, which was used as it offers a very different perspective on the topic in question.

Slovak and Czech architecture of the 20th century 60: Comparison of selected buildings

Abstract The bachelor thesis deals with the determination of the basic common features and the differences between Slovak and Czech architecture of the 60s and 70s year of the 20th century. It is based on a comparison of four selected representative pairs of buildings, architectural monuments (Monument of Slovak National Uprising in Banska Bystrica and completion of the tower of the church of the Virgin Mary and St. Jeroným, Cyril and Metod, Vojtech and Prokop in Prague), crematoriums (Bratislava and Zlin), University campuses (Slovak University of Agriculture and the Czech technical University in Prague) and bridges in the urban environment (SNP bridge in Bratislava and Prague Nusle Bridge). The comparative analysis is preceded by the insight on the development of the Slovak and Czech architecture in the 20th century, focusing on the 1960s and the question whether in the joint Czechoslovak state existed two specific national schools. Comprehensive responds is given in the final chapter by summarizing the results of the comparison of selected buildings. The analysed buildings are graphically and photographically documented.

Themes of Animals and Bestiality in the Selected Works of Ladislav Fuks

Summary: This bachelor thesis deals with animal motifs and motifs connected to bestiality and inhumanity in the selected works of Ladislav Fuks (Věneček z vavřínu, Pan Theodor Mundstock, Variace pro temnou strunu, Spalovač mrtvol, Myši Natálie Mooshabrové). Its focus lies primarily on his works from the 1960s, with overlaps to his first work from the 1950s and one novel from the early 1970s. It concerns animal motifs, animalistic attributes of the characters, bestiality, brutishness and inhuman behavior. The aim of the thesis is to capture these motifs and mainly to characterize their meaning and function in each particular work and in the overall thematic structure of Fuks' oeuvre. An Outlaw Journalist's Journey through an Era Decadent and Depraved: Hunter S. Thompson in the context of America of the 1960s and early 1970s.

The thesis aims to explore the artistic personality of Hunter S. Thompson, one of the most distinctive cultural figures of post-war America, and his genesis as an author, journalist, and a counterculture idol of the 1960s. The era is now widely regarded as a turning point in contemporary American history as its deep-rooted values and norms were, over the course of a decade, gradually transformed by the young generation of social and political activists toward allegedly a more tolerant and liberal kind of community. Crucial in such an endeavor was the role of the countercultural movement that produced some of the most capable intellectual minds of the time, including Thompson. The paper thus analyzes the role and nature of the alternative culture in America as perceived by one of its most observant participants. Also, the thesis focuses on the author's role in establishing a new genre called New Journalism which can be linked with the era's countercultural efforts as well. In general, Thompson, in his texts, examines various phenomena surrounding the counterculture and provides us with a distinctive portrayal of the era's zeitgeist. However, unlike some of his contemporaries, he also remembers to examine numerous flaws and fallacies existing within contemporary American society, the American Dream...

Zlatý máj, magazine about art and literature for children and youth and the personality of Z.K.Slabý

Master thesis Zlatý máj - Magazine about Children's Literature and Art and the Personality of Z. K. Slabý follows foundation and history of Czechoslovak literary journal Zlatý máj. It has been published from September 1956 till December 1997, when 391 issues came out in forty one volumes. The magazine experienced its golden era in 1960s, when it participated not only in domestic, but also in international discussions about children and youth literature. But it also endured through the time of so called normalization (1969 - 1989), when most of literary or cultural magazines perished, and its final end was brought by lack of finance after formation of democratic Czech Republic. The name of writer and literary critic Zdeněk Karel Slabý has been tied to Zlatý máj for the most of its existence. He acted at first as the redactor, in two periods as editor in chief (1968 - 1971, 1990 - 1992) and at last as a member of board of editors. As a part of his job, but also because of his active and creative nature he shaped or co-shaped the image of Zlatý máj. His authorial signature is visible in his texts, his opinions and preferences formed the sections and content of the magazine. Master thesis analyses the work of Z. K. Slabý and defines its place and importance in context of the literary theory and critique.

Music festival as a socialcultural phenomenon

Subject of the thesis is to present a complex analysis of a music festival as a sociocultural phenomenon within a case study of Woodstock. The focus is on the role of Woodstock in the American cultural revolution in the 1960s. While applying chosen concepts from the field of social sciences, the author investigates whether Woodstock was an integral part of the American cultural revolution or not. The thesis proposes a neutral point of view of social sciences concerning Woodstock, since this event is interpreted in various ways. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the research of this topic through a culturological reflection.

Influence of Kasimir Malevich on Czech Art in the 1960s

This Bachelor Thesis tracks the influence of Kasimir Malevich on the development of Czech art scene of 1960s. It identifies recurring themes in Malevich's work, which inspired Czech artists in the 60s. The thesis also elaborates upon the mechanisms of these receptions. More specifically, this paper explores the imprints of Malevich's oeuvre in the artistic endeavors of Vaclav Bostik, Hugo Demartini, Dalibor Chatrny, and Karel Malich. And finally, this thesis also examines how Malevich's work was received and reflected in theoretical articles of Jiri Padrta, Arsen Pohribny, and Miroslav Lamac.

The Contribution to the Problems of Public Activities of the Student Movement in the United States of America in the 1960s

The Contribution to the Problems of Public Activities of the Student Movement in the United States of America in the 1960s In many aspects, the 1960s were a turning point in the history of the post-war world. Great number of political, as well as social and cultural turbulences took place during the decade, changing the world in a significant way. Social movements (which student movement was a part of - and an important one, one should add) contributed to these changes in many ways. After the "silent fifties" which almost completely lacked any form of political or social involvement of ordinary citizens, the sixties brought wave after wave of social disturbances, commotions, and even riots. First the civil rights movement, then the anti-war and student movements, tried to transform the American society into a better one. Students gathered around the issue of the Vietnam War, turning it into a cornerstone of their political agenda and even though they participated in a number of other (often more constructive) activities, these got necessarily overshadowed by the war issue.
