The following theoretical foundations were used: genre theory, presentation of specific genres related to the examined programs, media convergence and internet TVs and their recent production. The qualitative elements, including the visual communication means, which lead to the recognition of the genre construction of a specific TV show, are examined by combined visual and semiotic analysis. Quantitative elements such as tone and footage are analyzed by content analysis. The research reveals some significant differences in the examined TV shows based on a platform they are made on. These are identified as different approaches to...

The author is proceeding from Noël Carroll's similar paradox of junk fiction. First part of the text is occupying with the characterization of the aesthetic experience, the principle of repetition in the works of art and the definition of the term of genre. After that in the second part the particular conditions of the paradox are verified.

Fifteen documentary films (Život a smrt v Tanvaldu, Rozezlení, Pančovaná republika, Spřízněni přímou volbou, Svobodu pro Smetanu, Dělníci bulváru, Gadžo, Zločin pana Chytila, Já, horník!, Obnažený národ, Pět zrození, Matrix AB, Ubytovny, Blízký daleký východ a Má vlast Afghánistán) are analyzed in terms of qualitative, quantitative, form and genre. In particular, exploring the genres of individual films is crucial for the work. The starting point for exploration is the genre fluctuations of the Czech Journal between the television journalistic reportage and the documentary film. The methods used for the chosen examination are represented by quantitative content analysis of the films (list of identifying features, etc.), but especially by qualitative analysis. Metamorphoses of Narrator in Novels of Jaromír John
Kleňha, Petr ; Mravcová, Marie (advisor) ; Holý, Jiří (referee)
Metamorphoses of Narrator in Novels of Jaromír John This diploma paper focuses on the function of the narrator and his various forms in John's prosaic work. It deals with the issue of the construction of the fictional world and how the narrator influences the reader's understanding of the described events. Primarily, we try to compare the narrative categories of the main contemporary concepts as influenced by Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan, Franz Stanzel and Lubomír Doležel. It is our terminology base. Theoretical understanding of the narrator is the basis for the analysis of John's fiction from the aspect of narrative types applied to a selected sample of author's works: the anthology of the tales with war theme Večery na slamníku, novels Moudrý Engelbert, Výbušný zlotvor, Pampovánek, Honda Cibulků; marginally Estét and other works. Concurrently this work aims to describe construction methods that are typical for John's creative style - it is mainly the use of irony, the principle of collage and documentary elements. It shows that the author's work at that time belonged to the experimental stream of Czech prose. Also, we observe the relationship between author's prose work and his aesthetic concept. We hope that we were able to, at least partially, explain the literary style of Jaromir John. His importance and...
The Language of Novels for Girls by Lenka Lanczová
Szyszkowiczová, Markéta ; Mareš, Petr (advisor) ; Synková, Pavlína (referee)
The thesis is focused on linguistic analysis of selected novels for girls by Lenka Lanczová (Znamení Blíženců, Kam se vytrácí láska, Potížistka, Dvakrát dospělá). Its aim is to analyse all language levels of examined texts and, above all, to refer to symptomatic linguistic devices, which are used in them. Furthermore, the novels are compared one to each other to point out possible development of author's language. Finally, the focus is given to the differences and similarities with the earlier production of novels for girls. The base of explanations is represented by literary research of novels for girls, especially the findings from Dagmar Mocná and Svatava Urbanová, and also by existing linguistic analysis of their language (the publication Prostor pro jazyk a styl by Oldřich Uličný and Jan Horák).
Authority and Authorship: James Agee's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men as a Work of Fictocriticism
Childs, Morgan ; Armand, Louis (advisor) ; Vichnar, David (referee)
viii Abstract This thesis uses James Agee's 1941 book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men to examine the role of so-called fictocriticism in emphasizing the immutability of an author from within a text. The thesis argues that the fictocritical text accounts for the impossibility of extricating the author from writing. Although its precursors date back several centuries- perhaps most notably to Michel de Montaigne-the term fictocriticism was coined in the mid- to late twentieth century to describe texts existing at the interstices of ostensibly fictional and factual genres of writing. Agee's text, borne out of a journalistic assignment for Fortune magazine, blends elements of long-form magazine journalism with lyric poetry with the author's famous sprawling, diaryesque prose, calling the reader to question which elements of the text are rooted in fact and which are simply the author's fabrications or, indeed, whether such a distinction can be drawn. The term can be applied only anachronistically to the 1941 book, yet as defined in these pages it is a befitting description of Agee's otherwise unclassifiable text. Fictocriticism lacks a singular definition, so the examination of Agee's Famous Men as a fictocritical work rests on a thorough revision of the term's history and its lexical implications, both of which...
Comparison of late night talk show in Russia and the USA
Bichan, Anastasiia ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The subject of this thesis is comparison of late night talk shows on major TV networks in the United States of America and Russian Federation. The focus of the research is in the extent hosts are willing to discuss political topics and joke about politics and how that correlates to political regimes in their respective countries, authoritarian (Russia) and democratic (United States). The first part of the thesis defines the necessary terminology pertaining to TV format and genre in the context of late night TV. One of the chapters covers forms and objects of political communication, analysis of the way messages are delivered, their content and influence on the recipient. Attention is paid to specific characteristics of political communication and the way they are realized in late night talk shows. Given the propensity of late night talk shows to discuss political issues in a light-hearted way, the thesis researches "entertainization" of political communications. The second part of the thesis provides qualitative and quantitative content analysis of the TV programs chosen as a subject of the research.. Last chapter contains results of that content analysis pertaining to primary characteristics of these programs.
