Translation with Commentary: Queer Fiction - The Ambiguous Emergence of a Genre

The aim of this thesis is to translate the text Queer Fiction - The Ambiguous Emergence of a Genre and make a commentary. The commentary is divided into four parts. The first one is an analysis of the source text, it is followed by a description of the method of translation I used. The third part threats the main problems I faced while translating, including their solution and their explanations. In the final part, I analyse shifts between the original and translated texts.

This bachelor's thesis consists of a translation and a commentary covering four points: translation analysis of the original, translation method, typology of translation problems and shifts. The translated text is a part of a book Women in Ireland: A century change written by Myrtle Hill. The book gives an account of the involvement of Irish women in important events which took place in Ireland in the 20th century. It also brings interesting information about their everyday life at that time. It contains much information about Irish culture and politics of that time and many citations from texts which are about hundred years old. The translation of the citations and the culture- bound facts will be a major challenge.

This bachelor's thesis consists of the translation of the first part of the book A Story of England by the British author Christopher Hibbert and a commentary including translation analysis, the description of the translation method and the description of translation problems and shifts. The first part of the book deals with the history of England from the Neolithic times to 1066. It focuses mainly on the individual waves of immigration. It is a popular scientific text characterized by a number of terms, facts from British life, complex phrases, participles and a complex syntax. RESUME The aim of this study was to make an adequate functional translation of two short stories - Cloud (Oblak) and Milky Way (Mléčná dráha) - taken from the book of contemporary Czech writer Jan Balabán We are here (Jsme tady) and its translation comments. The first three chapters of this diploma work present a multiple-aspect analysis of original texts, define the translation method and concept, which aim to reproduce correctly the aesthetic function of analyzed literary works with the strengthening their communicative and informational functions. The last two chapters are devoted to analysis of translational difficulties and changes, which take place in the course of work and primarily cover lexical and pragmatic levels of texts.

This bachelor thesis consists of a translation of a German text into Czech and an expert commentary on the translation. The translated text is a popular research paper entitled "Grimmsche Märchenfiguren und Archetypen in der Werbung". The expert commentary deals with four areas: translation analysis, translation methods, typology of translation problems and shifts of expression in translation. The aim of the commentary is to acquaint readers with translation procedures and methods, to reflect problematic passages in the text and to find a feasible translation solution drawing on theoretical knowledge.
