Šafářová, Adéla ; Ripka, Štěpán (advisor) ; Mitrenga, David (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Identity of deserving and it's construction by social benefit recipients" explores the ways the benefit recipients reach deservingness. While public discourse presents users of social benefits as inactive people, who abuse state social support, benefit recipients themselves perceive their position in a different way. Deservingness plays the role of a powerful instrument in the relation institution-claimant, by means of that the officers distinguish between deserving and undeserving recipients and against that they have to demonstrate themselves. The claimants try to reach the identity of deserving by means of many strategies, which on the on hand reflect public discourse of state social support, on the other hand potential failure during this identity negotiation and consequently alternative ways of presentation of deservingness. The research was empirically oriented, qualitative interviews used for analysis were inspired by principles of collaborative dialogue [Anderson 2009], which enables to depict that identity negotiation in the context of situatedness [Goffman 1999] of informants. On the one hand, they answer the general notions of ideal claimant through activity, job searching or good financial management [e.g. Howe 1990], on the other hand, due to the failure of the...
Drug Prevention among Roma Youth
Hrabcová, Marta ; Sak, Petr (advisor) ; Janošová, Pavlína (referee)
This thesis deals with the drug prevention among Roma youth. It is based on the research among the clients of Children and Youth Centre Teen Challenge Int. I have been working there as a part time worker the last three years. Using the method of in-depth half- structured interviews, I interviewed twelve clients, ages in the range of ten to sixteen years. All of them were members of the Roma minority, which is a group significantly affected by social exclusion and wide range of socially pathological phenomena, including the use of addictive substances. Given this situation, Roma youth appears to be a group highly at-risk of drug addiction. This means that special attention should be paid to this group in selective prevention efforts. Beside this, non-specific prevention is also extremely important. In this paper I tried to show that, as many risk-factors are closely related to the very ethnic specificity of this minority. Its unique cultural features must be taken into account. Non-specific prevention should focus not only on the meaningful use of free time, but it should also seek to strengthen self-confidence, positive features of ethnic identity, ability of planning and postponing satisfaction. Some other important parts of non-specific prevention could consist of efforts to teach how to accept...
Transgenerational transmission of romani musical knowledge and skills in Klenovec and Kokava
Nuska, Petr ; Jurková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Skořepová, Zita (referee)
This thesis analyses transgenerational transmission of musical knowledge and skills, (i.e. methods of musical teaching and learning) in the community of Romani musicians in Klenovec and Kokava in Central Slovakia. The thesis questions widespread myth about innate musicality of Roma and suggests an alternative explanation for postulated musical excellence of Roma through differences in their musical education. In the first part of the thesis, the question of musical-talent heritability both in social and natural science is being discussed. It concludes that despite of long discussions and recent hints in the field of genetic, we cannot consider an inborn genetic component for Romani musicality. In the second part, theoretical differences in music-educational systems are discussed (Merriam, Van den Bos, Turino) and the majority's institutionalised system of musical education of the Czech Republic and Slovakia is presented. The third part is a comparison of the institutionalised system with traditional methods of musical learning and teaching inside musicians' community in Klenovec and Kokava. Specifics of these methods and their contribution to construction of Romani musicality are discussed. This part is based upon data collected during author's own ethnographic research (2013-2015). The final part of the...

The Differences Between the Hungarian and Roma Minorities' Situation in the Contemporary Romania
Stejskalová, Michaela ; Kocián, Jiří (advisor) ; Tejchman, Miroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the status differences between the Hungarian and Roma minorities after an accession to the EU in 2007. It examines how the approaches of Romanian government and the European Union differ toward the minorities and it characterises major challenges of the minorities in four different aspects - education, employment, housing conditions and political representation. Romani people started getting more attention from the Bucharest government when the country decided to join the European integration process. The EU was monitoring the situation of the Roma community regularly and decided to publish a framework strategy for Roma inclusion in 2011 which served as an example for member countries. Romanian government elaborated its own strategy within a year and updated it in 2014. This document provides a list of instructions to all Romanian institutions how to tackle the problems Romani community faces such as discrimination in hiring process, school segregation, bad housing conditions or poor representation in politics. The Hungarian minority has considerably better position in Romania than Roma people. Compared to other minorities this community is represented by solid number of politicians and Hungarian party UDMR has been part of the Romanian parliament since the election...
