Andresek, Šimon ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on how the topic of alcohol consumption was framed in the Czech press in two subsequent periods: 2018-2019 and 2020-2021. The emphasis is put on comparing the findings from both research periods, both in terms of frames and other variables studied, such as the topic, the source cited, or the relationship between the sex of the protagonists and the narrative(s) present. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses the influence of media content on public sphere, through the description of the phenomenon of agenda-setting. Then the framing itself is presented, both through the perspective of the agenda-setting theory (as a subset of it), but also as a completely autonomous phenomenon. Different perspectives on framing are presented which are then illustrated with several spatiotemporally distinct studies that address the media framing of alcohol use. The analytical part consists of two methodological components - qualitative and quantitative content analysis. First, qualitative content analysis is used in order to find and describe issue-specific frames at the forefront of the generic conflict frame. Subsequently, the presence of the described specific conflict narratives in both research periods is quantified and the findings are compared. The results suggest that alcohol...
Framing of the EU during the European Parliament elections 2014
Charvátová, Anna ; Hájek, Roman (advisor) ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (referee)
Framing is one of the important concepts of media studies. That is because the journalists use framing as they create news. Framing makes it easier for their audiences to perceive the news and to understand it better. In media production framing occurs mostly because of the fact that journalists are affected by their opinions or by the organizations that they work for. Even the recipients doesn't have to perceive the news same way as the author - they are also affected by their opinions and his environments. The goal of this thesis was to find out how three Czech journals - Respekt, Reflex and Týden - framed European Union during the European Parliament elections 2014. In that period media informs about EU more than usual. Another goal was to find out how journalist constructed these frames. Qualitative analysis revealed six frames, which I named: Uncertain future of the EU, Lack of interest of Czechs for the EU, Absurd regulations of the EU, Necessary bureaucracy of the EU, Relevancy of the European parliament and European MPs and Inefficiency of European MPs. In analyzed journals prevailed negative frames over positive ones. As tools of framing authors used mostly headlines and captions. Selection of sources wasn't as important as choice of vocabulary and repetition of words in texts.

The thesis builds upon the theoretical principles of the relationship between politics and media in a given societal system, media framing of political news, and normative aspects of balance in the news. A definition of scandal follows as well as description of fundamental characteristics of promotion in the media of political scandals in particular. The thesis aims at application of this theoretical basis on the aforementioned case and its empirical verification. The empirical research includes source analysis and an evaluation of the source balance. A quantitative content analysis is used for these purposes. The results show an intense media coverage of the case and a major media focus on elite (political) resources as well as a frequent representation of particular political actors at the expense of others (related to the case). The results also demonstrate that media did not reflect the fact, that the authenticity of the Gorila document which was the origin of the case was not officially proven at the time.
