The Phenomenon of the "Intellectual Dark Web"
Drake, Daniel ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
This paper investigates the topic of the "Intellectual Dark Web" - a supposed grouping of academics, authors and other personalities, whose opinions are deemed to be controversial. Due to a lack of academic coverage, the paper pinpoints the background from which this term had arisen and tries to find out whether the group can be considered a coherent entity. The research part of the thesis is divided into two phases. In the first, the three most prominent protagonists (Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, and Ben Shapiro) are subjected to a Critical discourse analysis from which the five most recurrent themes emerge. These are identity, free speech, anti-left, anti-elite, and appeal to reason. Subsequently, ten content pieces for each of the authors are analysed to find out whether these five topics overlap across time and different types of media formats. The biggest overlap was detected in the anti-left rhetoric, although there seemed to be a subtle difference in what the respective men mean when they use the word "Left". Similar conclusions were made on the topic of identity and the opposition to elites. The analysis also showed that in addition to the identified common topics, each of the authors focuses on a somewhat different area, in which, due to their different ideological and, above all,...

Pánková, Tereza ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
The Bachelor thesis The Role of the Media in the Free Speech Movement at the University of California, Berkeley focuses mainly on the events of 1964, when Berkeley became the center of American political activism. The first part introduces the characteristics of the whole conflict, concentrates on the sources of the conflict as well as its phases and summarizes the impact and aftermath of the movement. The second part deals with the treatment of the movement by media and is divided into three chapters. The first focuses on tendency of the media to accuse the protestors of radicalism. The students participating in the movement were often called communists or beatniks. The second chapter is devoted to Mario Savio, the leader of the movement and the effect media had on his role. The media turned Mario Savio into a national celebrity, while other leading figures were completely ignored by the journalists. Brišová, Jana ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to provide a complex analysis of free speech on the internet, violation of this right and ways how to protect own privacy in cyberspace. It is based on a theoretical exploration of protection of free speech, right to privacy and collision of these rights. Based on this theoretical analysis this thesis seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of the cyberspace as a space enabling free speech as well as violating the right to privacy. This thesis also explores the responsiveness of the Internet to the users' demands on privacy, violations of the right to freedom of expression, and censorship of the Internet, as demonstrated by the case studies of countries taking these steps. This is followed by a research of ways to circumvent Internet censorship, including the possibility of anonymity on the Internet. Rybář Holubová, Eliška ; Kühn, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Wintr, Jan (referee) ; Polčák, Radim (referee)
Freedom of Speech and its Postmodern Challenges in Perspectives of European and American Theory and Case Law Abstract This dissertation entitled Free Speech and its Postmodern Challenges in Perspectives of European and American Theory and Case Law joins a vibrant conversation about the changing nature of free speech in the digital era. The internet, both as a communication technology and a multimedia platform, has fundamentally transformed the world around us: political, legal, media, economic and other important dimensions of our postmodern society. As internet expanded and became almost omnipresent, it also emerged as an essential domain for freedom of speech, becoming a new public square, newspapers, radio and TV. This new and inter- connected digital cosmopolis introduced brand-new legal challenges, reflecting the inherent tension between the global virtual community and local legal rules and systems. The purpose of this disseration is to modestly contribute to the current discourse and to introduce some complexities of this brave new world of digital free speech. The internet, particularly Internet 2.0 in the era of social networks, redefined the rules of the game, transformed the field as well as the players. The new pluralist model of digital free speech can be portrayed as a structure with complex...
Comparison of U.S. and Mexican approach to freedom of speech
Drhlíková, Eva ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Raková, Svatava (referee)
Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right which is important not only for the intellectual integrity of an individual but also for the healthy development of the whole society. The work represents both general arguments for freedom of expression and codification of freedom in two different legal cultures. In the United States the freedom of expression is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution, which complements the rich jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of the United States. In Mexico, the right is regulated in Article 6 of the Constitution. The work shows how both countries reached the current legislation on the basis of examination of legal developments and cultural values. The values of the societies are presented on the basis of Hofstede's cultural dimensions. The core of the thesis is to compare the legal limits, which is made primarily on the basis of judicial practice of the Supreme Courts of both countries. Emphasis is placed on four main areas which are related to freedom of speech: (i) fighting words including hate speech, (ii) symbolic speech, (iii) obscenity, and (iv) defamation. In addition to the legal limits the work interprets also the most significant actual limits in both countries. Finally, the author examines the relationship between freedom of expression and...

Censorship in ČR after 1989
SEGI, Stefan
The dissertation thesis examines czech literary censorship after 1989. It presents a polemical addition to a monograph published one year earlier entitled V obecném zájmu [In the General Interest], which covered the same period. The main methodological resource is represented by the books of a British theatrologist Helen Freshwater, who based her inclusive model of censorship on the border crossing of hard and soft censorship. Moreover, she moved her emphasis on discourse as the main indicator of what is considered a censor´s intervention in a particular historical moment. The core of the thesis consists of four chapters, which on the basis of the original research examine the typical cases of censorship and related discourse. These chapters are included in a broader frame of a changing notion of censorship and political correctness in the discussed period. The chapter devoted to the banned skinhead music group Braník is based on the examination of the respective court´s files and the analysis of the changing notion of freedom of speech in the beginning of the 1990s. The chapter about the censorship of literature for children and youth is based on the comparison of various editions of books written by Bohumil Říha. Furthermore, the conditions are observed, under which the interventions to these new editions were identified as censorship. Censorship on internet is treated in the chapter devoted to the regulation of the virtual (literary) child pornography, while the chapter devoted to political correctness focuses on texts and paratexts of splatterpunk literature. This doctoral work should offer a complex picture of changing ways of censorship and thinking after 1989.
