Reasons for low Linux adoption on desktop PCs
Langer, Filip ; Haupt, Jaromír (oponent) ; Sedláček, Pavel (vedoucí práce)
The goal of this bachelor thesis is to acquaint the reader with Windows and Linux operating system, their environment, programs they dispose of, their strong and weak points and determine why is Linux operating system not popular choice for adoption among desktop computer users. This bachelor thesis should provide reader with enough information to make them acquaint enough to determine, which operating system would fit their needs the most. I have decided to create this bachelor thesis due to the fact that I once faced the lack of information materials about this topic.
Science and Technology in Media
Gellnerová, Zuzana ; Haupt, Jaromír (oponent) ; Smutný, Milan (vedoucí práce)
This thesis deals with the influence of Media, especially New Media, on the field of Science and Technology. It defines basic media terms and warns that Media may represent an excellent mean of Science and Technology promotion. On the other hand, they are very powerful and can distort reality and manipulate with humans. There are explored several examples in the thesis, too. The conclusion outlines a possible view on the interconnection of Science, Technology and Media in the future.
Selected Types of DC Circuit Analysis in MATLAB Programming Language
Urbanová, Hedvika ; Haupt, Jaromír (oponent) ; Ellederová, Eva (vedoucí práce)
This bachelor thesis deals with methods of a DC circuit analysis. Both universal and special methods are discussed. All methods are theoretically determined. Calculation procedure is explained and advantages and disadvantages of each method are considered. Universal methods are explained by means of a problem identical for each method. Next, MATLAB is introduced as a programming language. Four of the discussed methods are written into the programming language MATLAB 2014a, namely the loop current method, the node voltage method, Kirchhoff’s laws, and the superposition method. The loop current method as well as Kirchhoff’s laws are programmed for two to four loops. The node voltage method is programmed for two to four nodes. The superposition method is programmed only for two loops. A graphical user interface is defined and designed for the program of Kirchhoff’s laws. Finally, the use of the programs by students is considered.
The latest trends and developments in the smartphone industry
Šteiniger, Jakub ; Haupt, Jaromír (oponent) ; Rujbrová, Šárka (vedoucí práce)
The main aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to take reader to the world of smartphone industry, which has even positive and negative effects on people. In the beginning of this thesis, history of mobile technology and evolution of the mobile phone generations is described. Subsequently a description of the most significant present trends and a brief outline of future trends follows. The next chapter is focused on the characteristic of the most significant smartphone brands, their mutual competitiveness and market share. The last chapter deals with comparison of various parameters of Apple and Samsung company, then a final summary is provided.
Pragmatic aspects of communication with chatbots
Kopecký, Michal ; Krhutová, Milena (oponent) ; Haupt, Jaromír (vedoucí práce)
Chatbots, programs able to communicate with a human, are becoming more and more popular in recent years. But because the artificial intelligence is a very complex scientific branch, it is difficult to create a human-like conversational robot. This paper will provide a brief introduction into the chatbot theory, where and how they are used, and Natural Language Processing technology. Several chatbots will be briefly described and exemplary conversations with them will be shown. The main attention will be paid to the pragmatic issues of conversation with a chatbot, such as observing the Conversational Maxims and Cooperation Principle. The findings will be demonstrated using analyses of dialogues with chatbots in the second part of the thesis.
Technical terminology in everyday life
Dolníček, Pavel ; Haupt, Jaromír (oponent) ; Smutný, Milan (vedoucí práce)
This work focuses on the history of technical terminology, its impact on everyday life and the different ways in which the history of terminology and its impact on everyday life can be researched. This work also discusses some of the limitations of such research and the probable explanations of the obtained data

English as a Lingua Franca in IT Advertising Campaigns
Arutsiunian, Aliaksandra ; Haupt, Jaromír (oponent) ; Zmrzlá, Petra (vedoucí práce)
In the 21st century, we can undoubtedly speak about a significant growth in the number of people who either use English on a daily basis or learn it intensively. English has become a global language of science, technology, education and business. As a main tool for communication, English has been granted the status of a Lingua Franca (ELF). Used by the representatives of various cultures, English has developed into a supranational language which has implemented authentic characteristics of different languages and cultures. Although ELF research is still considered to be in its initial phase, I will endeavor to identify specific features of ELF in IT advertising campaigns, using press releases of leading international IT corporations.
Jazykové charakteristiky úvodních sekcí v odborných článcích v elektrotechnice
Ondryáš, Radek ; Šťastná, Dagmar (oponent) ; Haupt, Jaromír (vedoucí práce)
In this thesis we use analytical framework proposed by Swales to analyse scientific articles from the field of electrical engineering to examine their structure and linguistic features. Each of the texts is segmented into discourse units called moves, each move represents a portion of text which serves a communicative function. Moves are then sorted according to Swales’ model, analysed and lexical signals are highlighted. If possible, moves are divided into smaller units called steps. Our analysis coincides with Swales’ model in nearly all points, the only exceptions being few steps which do not occur in the texts from electrical engineering since they are not of importance in this field. An alternative point of view on research articles is provided by patterns described by Hoey, which unlike Swales’ framework were designed for texts in general rather than specifically for the genre of research articles. Despite their differences, the analysis presented in this paper shows that there is big overlap between Swales’ framework and Hoey’s patterns.
The use of metaphors in various genres of electrical engineering discourse
Svobodová, Pavla ; Zmrzlá, Petra (oponent) ; Haupt, Jaromír (vedoucí práce)
This bachelor thesis focuses on metaphor as a linguistic phenomenon and its use in various types of texts dealing with transistors, including popularization news articles, online tutorials, textbooks, and research articles. The aim is to map the occurrence and function of metaphorical expressions used in engineering discourse, and to classify them in terms of conceptual metaphors. The thesis also includes a comparison of the texts with respect to the phenomena under investigation.
