Sociological View of the Medieval Family
Škodová, Eva ; Kubišová, Zuzana (referee) ; Holubec, Stanislav (advisor)
The paper offers a historical and sociological view of a medieval family. Primary as well as secondary literature was used in its elaboration. It deals, for example, with the division of roles among men, women, and children. In the Middle Ages, there were strict views of life, strongly influenced by Christianity and, above all, the Catholic church. Household life was strictly patriarchal in the Middle Ages, with the woman and children being subordinated to the man. Unmarried brothers and sisters were often members of the household. After the death of the father, the wife or the oldest son took his place. The Church had a significant impact on marriage and its conclusion, as it had strict rules for engagements as well as an age limit and regulations for marriage. Marriage in the ruler's court was different, as state, political and economic influences prevailed in its preparations. Among nobility, in towns and in rural areas, the selection of partners was determined by parents. The emotional relations of the future spouses were of no consequence. Achieving a divorce was difficult, but examples are known from families of the ruler or higher nobility. The wife was subordinated to her husband and her main obligation was to bear children, above all, to produce a son - a successor to ensure the...

Latin medieval hagiographie, its structure and influence in Bohemian lands
Izdný, Jakub ; Suchánek, Drahomír (referee) ; Drška, Václav (advisor)
I try to compare latine legends of first European christian monarchs of the early Middle Ages in my work. This way I detected some standard type of hagiographical story with this topic. The conformity lies in the way of acceptation of baptism, appearance of two secondary persons - the wife, who is accepting the sanctity, and the missionary bishop - and not least in using the theme of battle for faith. Especially the character of pious wife seems to be very important in hagiography and implies obviously the realy way of spreading christian religion with the marriage policy. As well important are findings, that despite the quite wide time span between the genesis of the oldest and the latest compared text, amplified by the different historical situation of Germanic and Central European peoples, shows the hagiography considerable similarity and proves the cultural alliance of West and Central Europe.

Þorr's voyage to Geirrøðr
Kozák, Jan ; Antalík, Dalibor (referee) ; Starý, Jiří (advisor)
The thesis analyzes eight versions of a narrative of thórr's journey to the dwelling place of thurs (giant) Geirrodr. These variant versions are preserved in several distinct genres and come down from different ages - the oldest is a scaldic poem from the time before the christianization of Scandinavia (10th century) whereas the other versions are written down by Christian Icelander Snorri Sturluson and Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus (both 13th c.). The youngest version is a fairy-tale short story from 15th c. The fact of diachronic and genre variation is used to track and analyze the changes of an originally religious narrative after the christianization, i.e. after the dissolution of the original pagan symbolic universe into the medieval (or even post-medieval) one. Although the basic pattern of the story and the names of the protagonists are preserved quite well (in respect to the time span and indirect transmission), the meaning and genre setting of the story is significantly altered: in the case of Saxo Grammaticus into euhemerized pseudohistory and in the case of 15th century short story into fairy-tale loosely connected to historical king Ólafr Tryggvason. This observation illustrate and confirm the process of demythization of pagan myths and show two genres where those myths are to be "stored"...

The Znojmo rotunda and early Christian painting
Bažant, Jan
The most significant monument of Czech medieval narrative art is the Premyslid Gallery in the Znojmo Rotunda, the oldest preserved interior with wall paintings in the Czech lands (1134). The central figure in this gallery, Premysl the Ploughman, is in all probability shown in the role of Christ and the Premyslids in the role of the apostles. The Znojmo painting was modeled on scenes with Christ handing over the New Covenant for his disciples to propagate, i.e. it is a depiction of the transmission of authority - an investiture of the ruling Czech dynasty.
