Czechoslovak dissent as a learning society

The diploma thesis is dealing with the problematics of Czechoslovak/Czech dissent, especially in the years from 1977 to 1989 and with its position as a learning society on its own. In the text, the status of dissent in the general society is described and followed, along with the ostracization of it, which ultimately led to a forming of a parallel polis, which included both parallel educational and cultural systems. Those were based on transmitting and sharing knowledge and skills inside of the community. Considering many activities performed by dissent organizations, the thesis takes interest mainly in four educational and cultural structures: home seminars, home theatre, samizdats and so-called festival of the second culture, both personally and organizationally bonded to Charter 77. These activites are not perceived only from the cultural history perspective, but more importantly with the help of andragogy and learning society concept. In conclusion, the thesis will focus on such specific educational and cultural topics and not only its impact on the parallel polis of dissent, but on the society in general, as well. Caves in Bohemia et Moravia Subterranea by Mauritius Vogt (1669–1730)

The Manuscript Bohemia et Moravia Subterranea (1729) by Mauritius Vogt reflects the subterranean landscapes and underground spaces based on Athanasius Kircher’s theories. The paper analyses the application of Kirchers’s terminology to the natural phenomena from Bohemia and Moravia. Further, we focused on how Vogt worked with his sources – how far he relied on literature, correspondence, or personal experience.

Underground on the hill? Interfaces and differences between the underground and the Hanspaul movement

The underground, especially the music scene is a relatively closed community connected mainly with the names of Ivan Martin Jirous, Egon Bondy and the The Plastic People of the Universe band, to which a whole range of activities of other individuals and groups scattered all over the country are connected. The Hanspaulka movement, which dates its beginnings to 1966, peaked in the late 1970s and gradually declined in the mid-1980s, has not yet been thought of in connection with the underground. The aim of these reflections was to point out the connections, but also the differences, between the two communities and thus point out the problematic nature of isolating the underground movement from a much wider environment of other unofficial and non-state-controlled activities.

Analysis of film and television content referring to the Czech underground produced before 1989

The bachelor thesis Analysis of movie and television content referring to the Czech underground produced before 1989 focuses on the elements of communist propaganda in the nationwide campaign against the Czechoslovak underground in the 1970s. The thesis examines film and television content produced about the underground movement in the 1970s using qualitative discursive and content analysis method. In the theoretical part, I draw on literature and contemporary newspaper articles to add the historical context. I also present events that had an impact on the development of musical genres in socialist Czechoslovakia and the creation of the underground as a way of life. The next part presents a short history of the bands The Plastic People of the Universe and DG 307 and introduces the circumstances of the Kapela event of the clandestine State security. The last chapters of the theoretical part are devoted to propaganda and its use in film. In the practical part of the thesis, the film Atentát na kulturu (Assassination of Culture) and the episode Mimikry from the 30 případů majora Zemana (Thirty Cases of Major Zeman) TV series are analysed. Underground culture – adaptation of an old brewery in Litovel

Litovel, or Moravian Venice - a town with rich history, that has its fate tied together with flowy branches of Morava River. A town, that has diverse opportunities and potential, town that is culturally rich, town full of unusual and surprising places. One of those surprising places is the underground complex of spaces originally belonging to an old brewery - seemingly condemned to be forgotten forever and replaced with a new housing complex. Is it possible to save this half-forgotten world of arches from its fate? Can we find a new solution for this blind spot on the border of historical center, that can both save the historical heritage and help the town fight with housing crisis? These are the questions the following project aims to answer. It mainly covers an architectural study of an adaptation of the underground cellar spaces and their younger second floor addition - the project also tries to reconnect them with the cultural life of the town. The project includes new public space design and conceptual solution for the brownfield around our site. The work also offers an alternative for the new housing complex which works better with its surroundings and pre-existing urban landscape.

Jan Steklík as an Artist and a Founder of the Crusaders' School

This thesis discusses the artist Jan Steklik and the Crusader school of pure humour without the joke. In the introduction, the political situation and visual arts during the normalization period are presented, then the origin and history of the Crusader school is introduced. These include Karel Nepras, Zbynek Sion, Eugen Brikcius or Helena Wilson. All of their most important projects are presented. The second part of the work is devoted to Steklik himself. First, his biography is presented, which summarizes his life from his childhood, his studies, to his last exhibitions. Then his role in the Crusader school is discussed in detail. Finally the last part of the thesis is dedicated to his art. His beginnings, drawings, land- art projects and exhibitions are as well. The aim of this work is to introduce the personality of Jan Steklik not only as an artist, but also as a person who brought humour into the grey socialist society.

Forms of the Czech underground scene

Resumé The diploma thesis is dedicated to the forms of the Czech underground scene on the basis of the analysis of two samizdat literary journals - Vokno (1979-1989) and Revolver Revue (1985-1989). The thesis studies analogous and distinct tendencies in both magazines which became the platforms of the different underground generations. Vokno is connected with the first underground generation that was formed at the beginning of the 1970s. The second underground generation debuted at beginning of the 1980s and later united around the Revolver Revue magazine. The next part of the diploma thesis focuses on the symptomatic features of the poetics of four central writers that shaped the appearance of the journals. The analysis arises from the texts published in both Vokno and Revolver Revue magazines.
