Social Class in E.M. Forster's Howards End and in Zadie Smith's On Beauty
Lacková, Štěpánka ; Topolovská, Tereza (advisor) ; Higgins, Bernadette (referee)
This bachelor thesis compares and contrasts the depiction of social class in E.M. Forster's Howards End and Zadie Smith's On Beauty. The theoretical part introduces the concept of social class as well as its portrayal in Edwardian literature and in contemporary British literature and also in the works of E.M. Forster and Zadie Smith. Due to the apparent connection between the two texts, an overview of intertextuality and its functioning in literature is added to the theoretical part. The practical part of the paper interprets On Beauty as a pastiche of Howards End but mainly provides the analysis of the two novels in terms of their view of social stratification, in particular the differences between upper middle class and working class. Key words: Howards End, On Beauty, E.M. Forster, Zadie Smith, social class, middle class, working class, intertextuality
Parenting in the context of cultural inequalities: how parents justify their child-rearing strategies
Šulcová, Zuzana ; Frantová, Veronika (advisor) ; Hájek, Martin (referee)
This thesis is written from the perspective of cultural sociology and focuses on middle-class parents and justification of their child-rearing decisions. It describes how parents choose and evaluate the institutions their children spend time at, how they "other" parents with different values and how they relate to concerted cultivation - a type of parenting style which currently dominates the middle-class context. This parenting style (or ideal) puts a great deal of pressure on middle-class parents and it causes a symbolic war among them: a war for acknowledgment and a certain position in the cultural space. This thesis describes who the participants "other", which child-rearing strategies participants approve of, what values are crucial for them and what problems they deal with. Furthermore, four main differences between the participants' approach and the concerted cultivation approach were identified: emphasis on friendship, emphasis on balance between activities and rest, emphasis on fitting in with the majority and emphasis on approval of certain authoritarian methods such as imposing punishments, applying restrictions and issuing directives.

Evolution of Russian Middle Class in 1998-2008
Vojtíšková, Kristýna ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Horák, Slavomír (referee)
The existence of Russian middle class is often perceived as a condition for Russia's democratization and the country's economic progress is often mentioned in connection with the growth of the middle class and henceforth increased popular demand for transparent functioning of public institutions. However economic growth does not necessarily lead to more extensive middle class, especially not when the income inequality rises as was the case of Russia in the particular period. This thesis proves that Russian middle class grew between the years 1998 and 2008, it identifies its specific features and explains its evolution from the perspective of occupation and income. The data from Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, which the thesis is based on, confirm that while the Russian middle class was growing in size, growth in inequality was also observed, especially between cities and countryside and between individual economic sectors.
Vznik nové střední třídy jako výsledek reform Stolypina v 1906-1911
Turenko, Polina ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Johnson, Zdenka (referee)
The thesis features development and implementation of the agrarian reforms process in the economic and socio-legal context, directed on formation of peasant owners middle class, are analyzed. General approaches to solution of the Russian Empire agrarian and peasant questions are reviewed. Problems of private ownership features in the Russian Empire and influence of communities on economic activity, spiritual traditions, law commitments and life of the Russian peasantry are investigated. Economic and social-legal position of the peasantry before Peter Stolypin reforms are esteemed. Using historiographical, comparative and statistical methods there are introduced key figures that characterize state of the economy and social progress in the peasantry situation. The reforms resulted in rapid agricultural production growth, the internal market expansion, agricultural products export increase. However, the main achievement of the reforms, in my opinion, is inclusion of the Russian peasantry of the early twentieth century into land-market and economic market-capitalist relations, that have served as the basis for a middle class formation in the Russian Empire.

Šelmátová, Daniela ; De Castro, Tereza (advisor) ; Vošta, Milan (referee)
Middle class is important for economic development and growth of a country. Nowadays middle class in asian countries like China, Vietnam or India is significantly growing. Middle class in China has started to develop after economic reforms, which were launched in 1980s. People belonging to middle class in China are concentrated in urban area. Originally it started to develop in the coastal part of the country. There is a trend to move also to the inner part of the country. The biggest potential of the middle class is boosting domestic consumption. On the other hand there are certain problems, which might lead to middle income trap. The main problems are low productivity, high disparity, pressures on environment or aging population. The government is making a lot of measures to solve this problém. Nevertheless these problems are long term and they must focus on them in the future too.
