Approach to Gun Control Issue in Canada Under Stephen Harper's Governance (2006-2015)
Sochor, Jan ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the change of argument in the debate of gun control issue in Canada during Stephen Harper's governance. Gun control approach in Canada went through significant changes throughout the history. Until 1990s gun laws were mostly responsive to the events of the 20th century. The change of gun control approach occured during Harper's conservative governance. Since then, the safety issue of the gun control approach has started to be less prominent at the expense of the financial issue. That is due to strict gun laws which brought considerable financial expenses. The method of content analysis which was used in this thesis utilizes particular speeches of Members of Canadian Parliament when taking into consideration other primary sources such as official statistics and laws. The first part of the thesis deals with the approach towards firearms since 1867 until Stephen Harper's governance in 2006. This chapter also points out the reactivity and safety reasons why those particular laws were adopted. The second chapter compares selected speeches of Members of Parliament in order to prove the fundamental research question of this thesis, which is: Has the financial argument replaced safety argument presented by Conservative party during the reported period? The bachelor thesis...
Czech gun-owner platforms and mass shooting events: framing analysis
Čadek, Matěj ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
The primary goal of this diploma thesis is to analyze online and social media communication of the Czech gun-owner platforms. The online space is where these platforms are able to gather support for their cause and influence the mainstream opinion on firearms, use of guns and gun laws. This thesis presents a case study of online posts and articles of analyzed actors vis-à-vis European mass shooting incidents. Such events usually spark debates about stricter gun control which the Czech gun-owner platforms naturally oppose. The analysis is underpinned by the theory of framing and uses a methodological design proposed by the scholars Dennis Chong and James Druckman. Firstly, a basic set of frames is identified. Secondly, these frames are tested against a collection of posts and articles by one of the analyzed groups. It is concluded that most of the texts are explicitly framed using one of the identified communication frames. However, the usage of these frames varies based on the motives behind a given mass shooting. It also differs in the case of Czech incidents. Lastly, this work investigates whether and in what way the frames of gun-owner platforms are adopted by elites and the mainstream media and. In this case, a surprising conclusion is made: Despite the ideal framing environment - given the absence of...
NRA influence on D.C. v. Heller decision
Bastlová, Renée ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Klvaňa, Tomáš (referee) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor thesis adresses the issue of a landmark case from 2008 which dealt with the city's gun ban and in which for the first time in the history of the Second Amendment was decided in favor of an individual right to bear arms, specifically for the purpose of self-defense. The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution reads "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." There are two possible ways to interpret this amendment. One side of the argument maintains that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. The other maintains that it guarantees a right to bear arms just in connection with militia. NRA, one of the most powerful lobby groups in the USA, promotes the individual right to bear arms. As a part of my thesis I analyze methods of NRA's lobbying. The thesis examines to what extent did the Supreme Court of the United States and its justices copy thoughts of the NRA in this case. The goal of this thesis is to show similarity between the NRA's and Court's arguments with the help of long-term views and opinions of this organization that can be seen in the Amicus Curiae Brief. According to my analysis, the NRA is not the reason the case was born. However,...
