Martínková, Lucie ; Suková Vychopňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Jančík, Jiří (referee)
The thesis focuses on the issue of gender, in particular its non-binary conception, and investigates how the French language and Francophone society approach this area. The core chapters examine the multifaceted aspects of gender, incorporating sociocultural perspectives and linguistic approaches. In the first chapter, the thesis briefly scrutinizes the philosophy of language and linguistic culture in general. The second chapter explains pivotal concepts related to gender and introduces diverse cultural conceptions of gender. The third chapter describes key linguistic phenomena that pose challenges to achieving neutrality within the French language. The core of the linguistic part of the thesis is the fourth chapter, with the so-called écriture inclusive, inclusive writing, which at many points offers a solution to linguistic equality. The official forms of this approach in France and Canada are presented and its guiding principles are described. In addition, the thesis incorporates a proposal for a gender-neutral solution for the French language put forth by Florence Ashley, a legal and health activist specializing in transgender issues in Canada. The last chapter, chapter five, outlines reactions to the inclusive and gender-neutral form of the French language. The controversial debates that arose...

Kaválková, Kristýna ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Ezzeddine, Petra (referee)
Eating Disorders from a gender perspective: disease, or part of life? Bc. Kristýna Kaválková ABSTRACT This dissertation deals with a problem of "eating disorders", which are defined in medical literature, media and magazines as psychological disease, which relates to pathological way of dealing with food, body and himself/herself. It shows that that this area is not neutral from the gender point of view; eating disorders are usually women's matter. Based on semi-structured interviews within the framework of qualitative research, this work analyses opinions of women, who have experience with this, especially their experience of their physicality and daily life. It is also focused on how women perceive the presentation of eating disorders, which concerns them, in media, medical publications and society and how they interpret their status as those who are recovering from this illness. Women's testimonies point at the fact that their surroundings look at them as persons defined through their illness, as persons, who are exclusively connected with pathology and stigma. This view of surroundings, media and specialists, however, omit the diversity of human identities. It shows that women alone can interpret their experiences in different way. They perceive their eating disorder in the context of dominant discourse...

Tomaníček, Michal ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
This thesis "The Visual Representation of Women in Vogue" examines the changes in the portrayal of women in Vogue over time, comparing this phenomenon across three global editions of the magazine - the domestic version of Vogue CS, the original American version of Vogue U.S. and one of the most important and oldest Vogue editions in Europe, Vogue Italia. The thesis consists of a theoretical and a practical part. Theoretical part of this thesis is divided into four units that precede the actual research. The first one is dedicated to fashion magazines from the perspective of media type, the second one maps the origin, development and present of Vogue magazine, the third part is dedicated to the evolution of the media portrayal of women in the context of time, social situation and culture based on feminist theories and historical trends, the last category then focuses on fashion photography as a visual medium, which is the focus of the research. The practical part examines the issues of the world editions of Vogue magazine within the same time frame (1 year) in the context of the current times, but also in the context of historical developments (i.e. 2020, 2000 and 1980). Female candidates: analysis of the media representation of "femininity" in the Czech presidential elections of 2023
Michvoková, Marie ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to form an idea of the ways in which "feminine" is portrayed in the media in the Czech presidential elections in 2023. The representation of women in top Czech politics is still a minority and no woman has yet become president or prime minister. This fact does not mean that women are not as suitable for these positions as men. It means that they do not have equal opportunities in the public sphere, or rather they do not even dare to enter it. This stems from a patriarchal social order in which public sphere is adapted mainly to men. In the theoretical part of the work, I will therefore focus on the history of feminist movements and the present of feminist theories in the field of politics, the issue of women in top politics and the conceptualization of new media and their relationship with political communication. The methodological and analytical part will deal with the research of media representations. In 2023, only one woman ran in the presidential election - Danuše Nerudová. Based on an analysis of her official social media campaign, I will assess how she worked with the fact that she is a woman. The second part of the analysis will tell something about how this fact is portrayed by one serious and one tabloid media and whether it is somehow important to them. The...
Wearing Gender: Men's Take on Fashion
Hrušková, Zita ; Hrešanová, Ema (advisor) ; Benešovská, Barbora (referee)
The presented work deals with the male perspective on fashion and dressing. Clothing works with various means of communication, which are used with greater or lesser awareness of the individual. The main aim of this work is to find out how this communication is formed. In other words, it is a study of what goes into men's thinking and decision-making when it comes to clothing and what role their gender expression plays in this process. The work first presents several theoretical concepts that are inevitably connected with this topic. It is further enriched by qualitative research, which presents the mentioned topics in Czech context through 11 interviews with men of two age categories. Subsequent findings are approached through the lens of the grounded theory method. The key decision-making element turned out to be the everyday experience, which is manifested in the events in which men participate on a given day. An important aspect in men's lives are also external influences, which can come from a personal level, mainly represented by their life partners, or from a community level, exemplified by interests and leisure activities. These two main influential sources are covered by the overall social context, which sets general rules about what is appropriate or expected. In the case of the...
Possible Uses of Camp in Interpretation of Czech Contemporary Cultural Background
DEMETER, Peter
Proposed dissertation is focusing on specific eccentric aesthetics based on hyperboles, ambivalent meanings and ironic attitude, which in Anglo-American background is so called camp derived from French. Camp origin can be found on the court of Louis XIV, where we can notice passionate tries to cultivate affected court-style culminating in baroque metaphor of the world as a theatre. Due to impact of modernity and postmodernity, scope of the camp extended to various cultural spheres and phenomenon began to corelate through its eccentricity with common marginality, respectively with something what is different from "normality" and "genuineness" also settled schemes of perception or ways of historical reflection. Goal of proposed dissertation is based on theoretical-historical interpretations to trace mentions of camp (mainly in literature) with focus on Czech background, where its rich interpretational potential can clarify most of social-cultural tendencies.

Macháčková, Anna ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
The thesis presents a qualitative gender analysis of a Christian girls' magazine "IN! - dívčí svět" and explores how femininity is constructed in the magazine and how the results of the analysis can be interpreted using feminist theology. An important starting point of the thesis is the belief in the existence of asymmetric power relations. The study of the literary-media text, thus, allows showing whether the power relations are strengthened or subverted through it. The main analytical category of this thesis is gender. In the theoretical-methodological part, the basic concepts and methods used during the analysis are presented. In the analytical part, the method of resistant reading and critical discourse analysis is used. The analytical part consists of fifteen selected texts. Finally, the collected data are summarised.
Gender roles in fairy tales
Lechnýřová, Lucie ; Smetáčková, Irena (advisor) ; Francová, Veronika (referee)
Fairy tales have an educational and socialization impact on children. In fairy tales children find answers to questions, problems and situations, that life brings them. Fairy tales reflect true life - people come into the world, fall ill, die, get poorer, steal, get jealous, love and hate to death and they are willing to lay down their life for helping others. A child feels genuineness of story, finds something what it had experienced itself. Children identify themselves with fairy tale characters and their characteristics, heroes of stories are their models. So naturally children create their hierarchy of values, because moral message of fairy tales is clear and that is its advantage for children. Fairy tales interfere in all aspects of life and education. One of the aspects is the area of gender. In my research I presented the children a traditional fairy tale and less traditional fairy tale, where male and female roles are reversed. The aim of the research was to find out how boys and girls perceive the division of roles in fairy tales. I led structured interviews with children and compared the collected data with the gathered theoretical information.
