Politicization of WHO during COVID-19 pandemic in Czech media

This bachelor thesis delves into the portrayal of the World Health Organization (WHO) by Czech media during the critical period of the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to understand the nature of media coverage and its implications on public perception. The study examines whether individuals with lower socio-economic status and educational levels are predisposed to engage with media that casts the WHO in a negative light. Utilizing a dataset from the Newton Media database, the thesis employs quantitative analysis to assess the sentiment of media coverage and consumption patterns across different demographic groups in Czechia. Through rigorous statistical testing, the research reveals significant correlations between socio- economic and educational demographics with preferences for negative media portrayals of the WHO, aligning with the theory that such groups may be more skeptical of international cooperation. This investigation contributes to the academic discourse on the media's role in shaping public opinion during global health crises and offers insights into the socio-political dynamics that influence media consumption.

Politicization of the European Commission

The thesis deals with the concept of politicization of the European Commission. It stems from the assumption that the new election procedure of the President of the Commission which is connected to the nomination of so-called Spitzenkandidaten, i.e. the lead candidates of the political parties before the elections to the European Parliament, led to the strengthening of the Parliament and subsequent politicization of the Commission. The new President of the Commission thus comes from the strongest political party which ran the elections with his candidature. The thesis formulates four hypotheses while focusing on three main areas which might be influenced by politicization: public opinion awareness, strengthening of the political affiliation of the commissioners as well as of the whole College of commissioners, and change of its inner composition - the political experience should become more prominent when choosing the suitable candidates for the commissioners. The analysis shows that it is possible to trace a positive trend in public opinion awareness from the side of the European Commission. Furthermore, it indicates the political assignment of individual portfolios among commissioners. Sources and framing: a comparison of media coverage of climate change across the world

in English This paper looks into how climate change is being covered by newspaper media in two Global South countries and two Global North countries - India, the Philippines, Denmark and Australia. While there is some literature on who the main sources are in climate change coverage, as well as how frequently climate change is covered in different countries, there is less literature on how climate change is framed, and how this relates to who the main sources are. Analyzing articles from three newspapers in each country, this content analysis gathered data on what sources are being predominantly used in news articles, and further, how these articles are being framed. It was found that climate change has become a highly politicized issue in the media across most of these countries, and that the main voice in how climate change is becoming to be understood is politicians - except for in Denmark. At the same time, it was found that climate change is mainly being framed as an issue in need of action - except for in Australia.

Islam in the service of politics, politics in the service of Islam

The objective is a theoretical analysis of mixing politics and religion in Islam, a description of the functions of political and religious institution in Islamic society, and comparison with the Occidental concept of the relationship of religion (extension of the Church) and politics. The reality is mediated by the media quite often through the confusion of terms (such as Islam and Islamism, Islamist or Muslim and Arab and Islamic world) misinterpreted. Very easy it is based on generalization and inappropriate metaphor to create an unfavorable opinion about the culture and the people with whom the author did not even have personal experience. In this thesis should be separated by "West" view of the Islamic religion and politics and perceptions of the Islamic religion and politics through the lens. Part of the thesis is devoted to comparing the performance and Iran and Turkey in relation to the topic, i.e. how these two countries have religion and politics and what is between these two components of the relationship. The issue is the compatibility of Islam with democratic type of society and intercultural dialogue between the "Occident" and Islam.

Political and Economic Reasons for Energy Cooperation between the EU and Russia

In this paper I investigate the energy cooperation between the EU and Russia from the political and economic points of view. The relevance of the issue is due to the growing role of energy sector, the need for security of energy supply and demand and for political and economic balance of power in the region, and closer economic integration. Two theoretical approaches, geopolitical and bureaucratic, guiding the research, explain the behavior of protagonists. To better understand the present level of cooperation I analyze the background and dynamics of EU - Russia energy trade relations. As a case study, I investigate the Nord Stream project as an example of successful cooperation of Germany as an EU member state and Russia in this field. I discuss challenges for the healthy mutual partnership in the energy sector, namely, high politicization of the issue, monopolization of Russian energy sector and low sustainability of Russian economic development, and mistrust between the protagonists. I attempt to identify possible policy changes aimed to improve this cooperation and achieve fruitful partnership, security and stability. Transformation of eastern european media presented on public broadcasting establishment

The viewership of public service media in post communist countries of the so-called Eastern Bloc is steadily declining. The need for their support brings about a question about the future of PSB model. The shape of public service remit differs across the selected countries of the Visegrád Group despite the former similarities. This study is trying to provide the reader with a solid comparison of the evolution of public service broadcasting from 4 points of view: regulation, politicization, viewer's attractiveness and sources of funding. The analysis should shed some light into the discussion of future role of PSBs in post-communist democracies. The first part of this thesis is focused on the history of former Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland with stress on the broadcasting media and their regulation until 1989. It is followed with the key part analyzing the establishment of dual system, transformation of state-owned media into public service broadcasters and the setting up of the first democratic broadcasting laws. Next chapter describes the current state of European broadcasting regulation and its impact on member states' broadcasters. The closing part evaluates the major differences in compared public service media and provides possible implications for further development of PSBs.

How to be a tramp. Mediated debates about the nature of the subculture at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s

This diploma thesis deals with the polemic dispute between the subcultural magazines Tramp and Naše osady regarding the concept of the tramp identity and politicization of the subculture of tramping between the years 1929 to 1931. It examines the so-called red tramping - the inclination of part of the tramps towards communism as well as the related politicization of the subculture and its development, the platform of which is often considered to be the magazine Tramp; as well as criticism of this approach by Naše osady magazine, which advocates non-political tramping. The result of this work is the division of politicization of the subculture in the observed period into three stages: the efforts of MP Jiří Stříbrný and the media in his possession to politicize the subculture towards his politics, politicization and declaratively non-political members the culmination of a moral panic over tramping, and the communist politicization of tramps. The thesis concludes that Tramp magazine was a platform for red tramping, but only in the second half of its existence, not throughout the whole period, and that red tramping can be described as its leftist and later communist orientation, which remains largely ideological than to openly invoke the Communist Party. Politico-administrative relations and politicization in ministries of Czech Republic

This diploma thesis explores the topic of politico-administrative relationships and professional literature. The first part of thesis is based on the theory of politico-administrative relationships using the models created by Aberbach, Rockman, and Putnam (1981) and focuses on the development of the relationships in time. The following part introduces the phenomenon of politicization and several important typologies that specify it and show the multilayer nature of this term - it uses the knowledge of the following authors: Peters (2013), Eichbaum and Shaw (2008) and Hustedt and Salomonsen (2014). In the next part, the thesis focuses on the Czech context of this issues, briefly summarizes Civil Service Act. And introduces its own qualitative research conducted on the sample of ministerial officials. The research reveals 4 essential issues which characterise the politico-administrative relationship and politicization in the Czech Republic. These issues are third parties in in politico-administrative relationship, the position of state secretary, issue of influenzability of personal structure of ministry and positive politicization.
