Oligarchization in Bulgaria after 1989
Žaloudková, Klára ; Kocián, Jiří (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the process of oligarchization of Bulgaria after 1989. The collapse of the communist regime had created the opportunities for the emergence of a small group of ultra-wealthy citizens who had been to a varying degree involved in the process of policy decision-making therefore one can speak of oligarchy. The aim of the study is to offer a complex insight into the Bulgarian oligarchy in the years 1989-1997 while using the theoretical perspective of an American political scientist Jeffrey Winters. The other objective is to apply the parameters established by Winters for the purpose of the research of this phenomenon to the Bulgarian case in order to further develop his typology of oligarchies. The thesis put Bulgarian oligarchy into the broader context of the structural changes that took place in the country within the examined period. Based upon the analysis of the strategies for wealth defence, the thesis then presents the uniqueness of Bulgarian oligarchy. The central finding of this study is that, within one country, the oligarchs can adopt diverse strategies for wealth defence and thus one cannot speak of oligarchy in singular. The main contribution then lies in the introduction of two new types of oligarchy: aggressive and moderate.

Bulgarian track in life of Božena Němcová
Georgieva Ivanova, Sylvia ; Hasil, Jiří (advisor) ; Ivanovová, Darina (referee)
- English The Bulgarian trace in the life of Božena Němcová The relation of Božena Němcová to Bulgaria, the Bulgarian culture, the life and struggle of the Bulgarians in the late fifties and early sixties of the 19th century is one of the most important chapters of the Czech-Bulgarian cultural relations of the past. Unfortunately, it remains a matter almost unknown even to expert philologists. To get a better understanding of the relationship between B. Němcová and Bulgaria, we need to examine it in its close relation with her attitude towards other Slavic nations as part of the then predominating vision of the Slavic unity (the Pan-Slavic idea). The following text provides an analysis of her position regarding the quite complicated situation on the Balkans at that time, as well as her contacts with Bulgarians in Prague. Due to these acquaintances with writers or just texts written by certain Bulgarian (or Balkan in general) writers, she even started learning Bulgarian. There exist some of her translations of Bulgarian texts into Czech and even texts written in Bulgarian. These documents are described in detail, and the full chronology of creative connections of the famous Czech writer is included. The subject has been investigated on the basis of archive materials available both in the Czech...
External influences on Bulgarian Muslims
Pospíšil, Tomáš ; Pikal, Kamil (advisor) ; Tejchman, Miroslav (referee)
The paper "External influences on Bulgarian Muslims" describes what affects the belief of Pomaks (Bulgarian-speaking Muslims) and Bulgarian Turks; first, the assimilation campaigns during the 20th century, second, the new foreign policy of Turkey and third, the work of charity organizations connected with Saudi Arabia. The objective of this paper is to explain, why the Pomaks lean towards a fundamentalist form of Islam - Wahhabism - in some towns and villages. In order to do that the text describes bulgarization campaigns aimed at the Pomaks and Turks and introduces both of these ethnic groups that together form 13 % of the Bulgarian population. The paper then describes the Turkish influence in the Balkans, especially the work of the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs (the so called Diyanet). The second foreign influence that is described in this text are the activities of Saudi Arabian organizations which are explained at large, including the connection of some of these organizations with terrorists and the ways in which they try to spread the fundamentalist Islam. These three influences are shortly compared. Based on this comparison the text concludes that the Pomaks accept Wahhabism, because they face long term questioning of their ethnic identity and because the political situation in...
Central Powers: Formation and Evolution of the Alliance
Sedláček, Tadeáš ; Kučera, Jan (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
Presented bachelor thesis describes alliance policy of Great Powers in last quarter of 19th century and in the beginning of 20th century. The thesis examines ways how alliance policy helped to form so-called Central Powers, which later became one of combatant in the upcoming Great War. The thesis sums up and analyse factors which led particular countries into joining the alliance. For this aim I have used international relations theory of realism, which is significant theory throughout 20th century. I have focused on two main groups of countries in my thesis, one of them actually formed Central Powers (Prussia, later Germany; Austria, later Austria-Hungary and Italy), while the other group consists of possible candidate states (United Kingdom and Russia). I have found realism most useful in this context as its main principles (state as most important actor, anarchic essential of international relations, mutually hostile relations between countries) extended with concept of balance of powers by Kenneth Waltz and Stephen Walt follows the way of thinking of 19th century statesmen.
Traditional Bulgarian Music in Interetnic context
Bečev, Georgi ; Tyllner, Lubomír (advisor) ; Kratochvíl, Matěj (referee) ; Kouba, Miroslav (referee)
The work deals with interethnic contexts in the traditional Bulgarian music, which in the past were often neglected or marginalized for various reasons. Convergent processes which take place as a result of cultural interaction between the Balkan ethnicities are assessed. A role of the long-term affiliation of the Balkan region with one state structure (the Ottoman Empire) is examined as one of the factors, which could significantly help mutual contacts between involved ethnicities. The author's starting points are based on the philological concept of the Balkan Linguistic Union, in which a set of phenomena and convergent tendencies in genetically unrelated languages of the Balkan area are researched. The author raises the question whether it is possible to formulate a similar thesis in the field of music and to define a notional Balkan Music Union based on the assessment of the main converging processes. For this purpose, two distinctive phenomena, which are both present in the Bulgarian folklore as well as, to certain extent, in a broader Balkan context, are selected. Musical and cultural interaction between two ethnic groups is examined at the ceremony of the Nestinarstvo/Anastenaria, folk mysteries which culminate with a dance on hot coals and is practised by small communities of Bulgarians and...
