"The last Bridge" - The United German Olympic Teams in the East And West German Press 1956-1964
Pust-Petters, Anna Celine ; Roubal, Petr (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
The purpose of the thesis is to explore how the negotiations about the United German Olympic Teams (1956-1964) were represented in the West and East German press, specifically in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FRG) and Neues Deutschland (GDR). The United German Olympic Teams were the last bridge connecting the two Germanys, continuing to exist even after the construction of the Berlin wall. The thesis is based on the assumption that sport played an important role in the construction of post- war German identities. Moreover, it will be argued that the two German states relied heavily on ideological demarcation from the respective "other" for legitimization. Thus, the thesis will argue that the discourses about the constitution of the team reflect on questions of identity, unity, and division. In order achieve this, Fairclough's method of Critical Discourse Analysis will be used to examine ideological and symbolic content in the discourses on the negotiations between the two National Olympic Committees. Nazi Anti-Semitism Remembered: Jewish Memorials in the SBZ and GDR between the Years 1945-1987
McQuiggan, Sean ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
The thesis is an exploration into the Jewish memorial sites erected in the Soviet Zone of Occupation (SBZ) and German Democratic Republic (GDR) between the years 1945 and 1987. The primary aim of the thesis is to provide a collection of Jewish memorial sites in East Germany during the aforementioned time frame. It uses the theories of French historian Pierre Nora as well a number of other authors to legitimize the importance of these memorial sites. In addition, a typology was created by the author to ensure the proper collection of the memorial sites in order to reflect the research question: how was Nazi anti-Semitism remembered in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) through memorial sites between the years 1945-1987? The thesis is, however, more than just a collection of data. It also provides observations about trends and patterns in Jewish memorialization as well uses a method introduced by Ahenk Yilmaz to examine the individual characteristics of the sites. The thesis concludes that Jewish memorialization in the GDR was primarily a bottom-up approach, a fact that has been overlooked by many researchers in the field. Symbol of democracy? Changes in perception of the Reichstag Building after 1990.
Nováková, Tereza ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
The topics of the bachelor thesis are the symbolic meanings connected to the representative architecture, and also the discussion and its participants that influence the process of creating new symbolic meanings. Representative buildings still pose symbols for members of the nation and help to establish the national identity. They also reflect historical events and are bearers of cultural memory, which is also besides other aspects created by political representatives. The subject of this research is the Reichstag building in Berlin, which, in the past, was associated with both positive and negative connotations in connection with the transformation of its appearance and function. The aim of my thesis is to outline the discussion that took place in the 1990s and to introduce its actors who gave the building its present appearance. The paper presents important turning points for the reconstruction, first being the colloquia on the topic of rebuilding of the Reichstag building and reconstruction requirements in the tender, and secondly the dispute over the cupola of the Reichstag and the artistic project "Wrapped Reichstag". By both of these events would be introduced the arguments for and against in order to describe how symbolic meanings should be attached to the building after reconstruction. In...
Motivation of France to launch Operation EUFOR Tchad/RCA from the perspective of neorealism
Pacáková, Kateřina ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to provide an answer to the question what were the driving forces behind French involvement in the EU military mission EUFOR Tchad/RCA. Chad and Central African Republic, where the mission took place, are both former French colonies. Despite the fall of French colonial empire, France managed to remain significantly influential actor towards these countries. One of the instruments France utilized to maintain its influence were among others the military missions. Whilst these missions were mostly of unilateral nature during the Cold War, in the aftermath, international system changed dramatically and the type of missions in which France was involved and official discourse justifying the involvement changed simultaneously. Since 2003, France is increasingly participating within the framework of Common Security and Defence Policy at the expense of its unilateral involvement. French officials dismissed any motivations akin to colonialist legacy of France, on the contrary, they emphasized humanitarian purpose of these missions and common European interest to participate. This paper seeks to examine the driving forces behind French shift to multilateral cooperation through the case study of military mission in Chad and Central African Republic. These driving forces are evaluated...
Bavarian Identity at the example of the Octoberfest in Munich: To what extent is the modern festival still traditional bavarian?
Kuldová, Susanna ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Zelená, Alena (referee)
The Munich Oktoberfest was established in 1810 as an instrument for strengthening the Bavarian identity in the new developed monarchy. In the 1950s it has evolved into an international event which is being visited by millions of people from all around the world. This development lead to negative opinions about the present purpose of the Oktoberfest. The aim of the thesis is to confirm or refute these critics which deny any connection between the past and the present form of the Munich festival. The introduction deals with the theoretical background and terms such as remembrance or festivals and celebration. A substantial part of the work consists in the discourse analysis of the Bavarian identity with its main symbols which are closely linked to the celebration of the Oktoberfest in Munich. The main part is devoted to the Oktoberfest itself, its origins and development with the most important moments and main features. The research is completed by a quantitative analysis of facts and numbers which are essential for this subject.

Záhorová, Kateřina ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Kubát, Michal (referee)
This thesis ("Enough is enough": Discourse analysis of Geert Wilders' parliament speeches 2010-2015) aims to analyze the rhetoric of the leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV) Geert Wilders in the House of Representatives between the years 2010 and 2015 and with the use of discourse analysis it aims to answer the research questions. The research questions of this work concern the issue of labeling Geert Wilders as a populist politician and his strong criticism of Islam, multiculturalism and European integration. Based on the theoretical literature and practical analysis of Geert Wilders' discourse, this thesis will answer the question if Wilders' rhetoric meet the criteria of populism. By analyzing the speeches it is also possible to determine the main topics of his speeches and answer the question if the criticism of Islam or European Union are a permanent feature of Wilders' speeches or just seldom mentions. The researched period includes the spectacular success of the PVV in 2010 general election, the drop in the 2012 general election and the following time in opposition. The discourse analysis is based on official transcripts of the speeches of Geert Wilders in the Second Chamber of the Parliament (Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal), the theoretical part is based on scholarly literature as...

Šrédlová, Petra ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
Formy a vývoj kolaborace ve Vichy Petra Šrédlová Abstract This bachelor thesis is dealing with various types of collaboration between France and Germany in the course of years from 1940 to 1944. It focuses on the three most significant types of collaboration, namely state collaboration, economic collaboration and collaborationism. The thesis is divided into three chapters, which are focused on particular kinds of collaboration and every one of them analyses their chronological development within several subheads. The state and economic collaboration took place on the level of government negotiations, in which the Vichy government did not support total collaboration, whereas collaborationism was based on ideological support of Nazi Germany, where the collaborationists supported absolute collaboration. The aim of this thesis is to analyse chronological course of particular types of collaboration focused on the breakdown of transformation of the attitude of individual participants. Their approach was changing mostly on the grounds of Germany's war achievements, which decreased noticeably within the course of the war and also on increasing German demands, mainly in the economic area. The thesis also pursues the question of efficiency of individual types of collaboration in the view of the motives that led Vichy...
J. Chirac and the French politics of multilateralism: content analysis of presidential discourse (1995-2007)
Koptišová, Evelína ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
Jacques Chirac is one of the most prominent French politicians emphasizing the multilateral agenda in international relations. However, the French multilateralism is specific in a way it opposes unilateralism and especially the "Americanisation" of the world politics - a phenomenon that is seen as a core of globalisation from the French point of view. This thesis focuses on the content analysis of Chirac's speeches concerning multilateralism between the years 1995-2007, and it aims to demonstrate that some of the geopolitical issues - particularly the Iraq War in 2003 - influenced Chirac's attitude and confirmed him in his multilateral agenda. This paper works with the methods of content analysis in order to compare individual speeches and to observe Chirac's developing stance. First chapter is dedicated to the historical and political context and to the role of the president in French politics. Second and the most important part then presents selected Chirac's presidential speeches in a chronological order and focuses on the content analysis of their transcripts. The primary objective is to find out how has Chirac's attitude towards multilateralism changed and how it was influenced by geopolitical issues, such as the Iraq War. Furthermore, this work also studies how has Chirac's multilateral...

Comparison of the influence of the PISA Study on the german and the czech educational system 2000-2009
Vermachová, Helena ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
This paper aims to compare the results and effects of the PISA study on the Czech and German educational system. The OECD compares with the PISA tests the abilities of the fifteen-year-old to use what they have learned during the compulsory school time in real life situations. Opposite to Czech Republic, Germany was able to improve its results. The undertaken reforms in Germany as well as in Czech Republic aim at similar goals, their results vary, however. The causes of the different outcomes are described by analysing the used instruments of educational policy and the whole political and public reception of the study. Those are illustrated by an overview of the media coverage relating to the PISA Study.
