Zourek, Michal ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor) ; Kovář, Martin (referee) ; Chalupa, Jiří (referee)
The doctoral thesis Czechoslovakia and the Southern Cone 1945-1989 analyses political, economic and cultural relations between an important country of the Eastern Bloc and three countries of the southernmost area of South America - Argentina, Chile and Uruguay - during the Cold War. The main objective of the thesis is to interpret unpublished Czech and foreign archives. The first chapter outlines Czechoslovak policy towards Latin America in the period under consideration. The following sections describe the relations between Czechoslovakia and the individual countries of the Southern Cone. These chapters are divided according to the nature of relations into political, economic and cultural contacts. Each of these three parts is further divided into subsections which correspond to important milestones of mutual relations. The thesis ends with an interview with Stanislav Svoboda, a senior diplomat of communist Czechoslovakia. His observations shed new light on the archive documents. Without abandoning the effort of presenting foreign researchers with the value of Czech archives, whose importance is further increased by the limited accessibility of Russian archives, the paper attempts to analyse the issue in the broader context of international politics. In a bipolar world, each of these countries had...
Analysis of czechoslovak social democracy in years 1916-1921
Henzl, Lukáš ; Novák, Miroslav (advisor) ; Gelnarová, Jitka (referee)
This work offers an analysis of social democracy in the Czech lands in 1916 - 1921. The aim is to describe the process and the causes of the collapse of the ČSDSD. This gave rise to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The study seeks to answer the question of why the Communist coup in ČSDSD failed. The introductory part deals with the historical development of the party against the background of national and world events. The main accent is set on the analysis of the two wings within the party: the left (revolutionary) and the right (reform). These wings are examined from the perspective of Giovanni Sartori and the sociologists of policy of the time, Johh Mertl and Robert Michels. This is complemented by the inclusion of the party into cleavages by Stein Rokkan and Seymour M. Lipset. The study also contains information about developments in the number of party members between 1913 and 1924, reflecting the decline in the war years and especially after the collapse of the party. The following chapter is dedicated to the strength of social democracy in the legislatures in comparison with the other Czech, respectively Czechoslovak parties. It shows the position of social democracy within the party system and its real influence on the direction the Czech and, later, Czechoslovak nation took. The text is...
: The Interpretation of Funeral Rituals in Czechoslovakia in 1950s
Tesař, Jan ; Randák, Jan (advisor) ; Kopeček, Michal (referee)
(in English) The main topic of this thesis is both analysis and interpretation of the relationship between funeral rites, political power and society. Funeral rites are understood as a complex of performative, symbolic social acts, which are themselves comprised of various distinctive phases and signs. The meaning of these acts and signs is important because it can change the features and practice of the collective it is assigned to. The main purpose of this thesis is not only to perform a thick description of different kinds of communist funeral rite in the given time period but to interprate it in the wider social and cultural context as well. The concept of political religion as a heuristic tool was used in the thesis in order to distinguish an ambivalent nature of communist ideology which manifested itself in funeral rites. Funeral rites are analyzed as models for human behavior, which represent key values and norms of communist ideology. At the same time, funeral rites are analyzed as forms of cultural management. That is the reason, why are put under scrutiny not only the rites which are significant for society as a whole but also the funeral rites of individual actors.

This thesis analyzes the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938) in terms of coalition behavior. It describes all aspects related to this phenomenon using the analytic and descriptive method. The work starts with the introduction to the coalition theory, including the typology of coalition governments and other theoretical aspects related to the coalition formation. The relation between the legislative and the executive power, the electoral system and the party system with the list of relevant parties are presented as other key factors related directly or indirectly to the coalition behavior. Political parties had decisive influence, that's why the group of their leaders called "The Five" was able to fade the importance of the parliament and the government during a certain period. On the other hand, there was also a great popularity and authority of T. G. Masaryk, the first Czechoslovak president. The main part of this thesis deals with the actual coalition behavior in years 1918-1938 and analyzes coalition formulas. The work describes the governments during the First Republic, their specifics, stability, and...

Vlček, Matěj ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Šírová, Tereza (referee)
This thesis examines how two magazines from normalization era (Czechoslovak television and Television) wrote about three chosen TV Series (The Thirty Adventures of Major Zeman, Good Water and Gottwald) when they were launched on the screen. Not only noticing topical and genre range of the texts, thesis also judges degree of propaganda in unusual journalistic environment (state press writes about state television). Thesis notes viewers'opinions apart from official texts. They were also published on magazines. Last but not least, thesis compares media environment of those days with temporary one. It notes details from normalization that are not supposed to work today. Theoretical and historical view on Czechoslovak television's operation during normalization goes before concrete research. A lot of media literature is used. Thesis confronts opinions of censored press in normalization with more objective state. This is applied both on evaluations or describing of series and on writing about real historical events. Therefore, two series that describes historiy from communist point of view were chosen - The Thirty Adventures of Major Zeman and Gottwald.

Malinová, Sandra ; Pech, Milan (advisor) ; Novotná, Eva (referee)
The master thesis deals with regional planning in Czechoslovakia. It approaches this urban discipline at its peak in the thirties and forties. The aim of the work is to introduce the origin and subsequent development of regional planning, particularly its theory, through texts and studies of urban planners. The introduction examines the theory and practice of regional planning in foreign countries and outlines which tools were used to import it to Czechoslovakia. Subsequently reflects how was this theory adopted by urban planners and institutions in the Czechoslovak environment and further developed. The thesis indicates a shift in the understanding of this theory in the pre-war period, during the occupation and after the war. This variation was related to political, economic and social changes and documents a close relationship between regional planning and a national economic plan. The work also examines how regional planning was believed to be organized and legally authorized and represents the first systematic attempts in methodology of regional plans' preparatory work. In sequential chapters the thesis analyses the content of regional plans in terms of settlement, transport, production, recreation and nature. The content is documented on specific studies, especially of the Moravian-Silesian...

Social metabolism in Czech and Czechoslovak territory in historical perspective
Grešlová, Petra
This dissertation is based on the conceptual framework of social metabolism and it applies methods of Material and Energy Flow Analysis and Ecological Footprint. It studies interactions between human activities and natural environment in Czech/Czechoslovak territory from the historical perspective (after the division of Czechoslovakia for Czechia and Slovakia together). The term of social metabolism is a metaphor inspired by biology. Society or human economy similarly to a living organism which extracts materials from the earth, processes biophysical materials to maintain itself and emits its wastes back. So the economic system functions in an analogy to a living organism and those processes are called "social" or "industrial" metabolism. This dissertation comprises seven individual empirical studies: (I) An introduction to a research topic covered in following articles. It is based on the work of leading world environmental historian and it interprets selected Czech realities within the context of the world environmental history. (II) The historical series of MEFA indicators together with ecological footprint. (III) An article which applies the ecological footprint method on the ecological farm in comparison to conventional agriculture in the context of more foreign studies on this topic. (IV) An...
