Gender stereotypes in TV car commercials
Salomonová, Markéta ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
Gender stereotypes and the prejudices associated with them are a frequently discussed issue in the society as well as in the academic world. Even though there is certain evidence of the changes in the media presentation of masculine and feminine roles, the stereotypical illustration of men and women still persists and the media have a significant impact on gender socialisation (Renzetti, Curran, 2003). TV advertising is a typical example of a media format presenting masculine and feminine genders unequally. This thesis examines this assumption focusing on the TV advertising of cars. I also follow-up on my bachelor thesis in which I dealt with the gender stereotypes in the TV advertising for children. In the research background and theory I concentrate on the general understanding of the biological and social views of gender, gender development and gender socialisation. I also provide a short introduction to the media as well as TV advertising theory. The methodological part explains the reasons for the usage of the selected research method and forms guidelines for the data analysis. 54 unique advertisements were analysed using quantitative content analysis which examined 24 variables associated with the three main categories: the advertising itself, the promoted car(s) and the participating...

The Entry of TV Nova belonged to the era of transformation and privatization of the Czech media. TV Nova was the first commercial TV channel of the full format type not only in Czech Republic but in all post-communist Europe. The Entry of TV Barrandov belonged to the era of TV digitalization. This TV channel was the first full format in the era of digitalization. The work tries to find answers if different conditions of entry caused usage of different marketing tools. Furthermore, if the differences of television markets influenced later developments of both TV channels.
The elections 2012: analysis of the media aspectof the election campaign of KDU-ČSL
Pohaněl, Jan ; Dolanský, Pavel (advisor) ; Trampota, Tomáš (referee)
The atmosphere of the election campaign before the elections in October 2012 was not such fierce as during the last campaign. It was mainly due to absence of a major topic that would polarise the society, like the health fees in 2008. The ČSSD tried to find a similar controversial topic that might have been the church restitutions for a moment. The purpose of the negative campaign was to discourage people from voting the governmental parties ODS and TOP 09, but it also could weaken the KDU-ČSL that was and still is closely connected with churches, especially the catholic church. The representatives of the KDU-ČSL themselves didn't publish any opinions concerning this matter, with only few exceptions. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse and evaluate the media output of the KDU-ČSL during the election campaign that was run before the elections to the regional governments and the Senate. In the first part, the outline of the media strategy of the KDU-ČSL is introduced. The next part is devoted to a quantitative content analysis that compiles an overview of the regional media in the respective regions. The following qualitative analysis describes the media outputs devoted to the KDU-ČSL and its leaders. In the final part, the whole campaign of the KDU-ČSL is evaluated, together with the...

In the first part the theoretical background necessary to understand this issue is presented - news values, gatekeeping, photography, photojournalism and mainly sport photography, photojournalism and ethics, difference between print and online media. The second part is the analysis. All the necessary information was gained using three approaches - quantitative content analysis, qualitative pictorial analysis and interviews with professionals. The quantitative analysis determines quantity and content of given photographs. The qualitative analysis refines the information regarding visual quality and content of the images. Interviews with employees of the selected media companies provide answers about choosing and editing the published photographs and explain the role of a gatekeeper. The thesis also verifies hypothesis that "online media prefer speed of publication over quality of photographs while printed newspapers prefer quality".

Iranian religious and conservative sphere on the web
Beranová, Lucie ; Šisler, Vít (advisor) ; Stříbrná, Adriana (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate and identify the present status of the internet as a platform for the presentation of conservative political and religious groups in today's Iran. In its first part, a brief historical survey is presented, suggesting that the internet was initially perceived by these groups with suspicion. The thesis then proceeds to explore how all of them have gradually embraced the internet as a tool to achieve their particular goals. In a detailed central section, the thesis explores the structure and content of the web presentation of important Shia institutions and clerics, religious students, the Revolutionary Guards, and influential conservative weblogs offered by individuals. The analysis of their content hopes to provide an insight into the methods used to target the audience and also to demonstrate the diversity of opinion and degree of internal strife among these groups and their supporters. On the basis of this research, the final part of the essay concludes that the internet is both a new and indispensable tool of analysis for current Iranian politics and society, providing a previously hidden insight into the immense diversity of opinion among pro-regime groups.
Media and Space: Influence of the Colonial Past on Cotemporary Media Coverage of France and Britain
Brádková, Hana ; Havlíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
This thesis examines the influence of the colonial past on contemporary media coverage of France and Britain. It focuses on selected colonies and the frequency of their references on two websites - Skynews.com and France24.fr. Thus the thesis tries to answer the question whether or not the colonial past is still a strong determinant which governs the media's priorities. Imperial history has always been very vivid in these countries, where vast colonial land was possessed. Consequently they must now deal with the impact of their incursions. A strong relationship with former colonies exists and still be seen through the media. In addition, the fact that news media still prefers those states to the information about different former colonies, proves the existence of very strong bonds after the end of decolonial processes. The thesis is divided into two main sections. The first section considers the theoretical frame of analyzed notions (e.g. the geography of communication, colonialism or postcolonialism etc.), colonial history and pursuits the basic facts from media studies. Subsequently, the second section focuses on research results, whereby the principal aim is to confirm the assumption that British and French media prefers to inform more about their own former colonies than colonies of the second great...

Fikejzlová, Ivona ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
The topic of this thesis is Film as a Reflection of the Social Situation (in the Perspective of Sociological Analysis). Its aim is to look at the issue of the film from a sociological point of view. This work consists of a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part describes basic approaches to the film as they appeared during the 20th century in selected disciplines and sociology. Thus, the theory contains rather a basic overview of the possible starting-points for working with film. The next part of this work is a practical research project, which is dealing with a specific area of the Czech historical film in the late sixties of the 20th century. The aim of the second part is to link theoretical principles with their practical use in the sociological analysis of the film, which is set within the contemporary culture and the social context of the Czechoslovakia in the sixties of the 20th century. The practical part, in which four Czech historical films were analyzed, confirms the essential idea of this thesis - the film is the reflection of the social reality. Key words: media, film, sociological analysis, visual sociology, collective memory
