RESUME The aim of this study was to make an adequate functional translation of two short stories - Cloud (Oblak) and Milky Way (Mléčná dráha) - taken from the book of contemporary Czech writer Jan Balabán We are here (Jsme tady) and its translation comments. The first three chapters of this diploma work present a multiple-aspect analysis of original texts, define the translation method and concept, which aim to reproduce correctly the aesthetic function of analyzed literary works with the strengthening their communicative and informational functions. The last two chapters are devoted to analysis of translational difficulties and changes, which take place in the course of work and primarily cover lexical and pragmatic levels of texts.

Commented translation:Introductory: Language Defined (E.Sapir: Language: An Introductionto the Study of Speech, 1921)

The thesis consists of a Czech translation of the first chapter, Introductory: Language Defined, from Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech (New York: 1921, Harcourt, Brace and Company) by Edward Sapir and of a commentary on the translation. The commentary consists of a translation analysis of the source text, typology of translation problems and their solutions, and typology of translation shifts. The translation method was chosen based on the analysis, which was based on the method of Ch. Nord. The main objective of the translation was to preserve the informative function of the source text and it's style with regard to the documentary function of the translation and the conventions and constraints of the target language.

The core of the bachelor's thesis is a Czech translation of the article Native American Systems of Knowledge by C. S. Kidwell published in 2002 as a chapter of A Companion to American Indian History. The second part is constituted by the commentary of the translation including the original text analysis, description of the translation method, translation problems typology along with their solutions and typology of the translation shifts. The analysis uses the model of Ch. Nord and constitutes the basis for the translation method. The further chapters deal with lexical, syntactical and presuposition problems and describe shifts that occured during the process. The commentary includes conrete examples of solutions and shifts.

The bachelor thesis is divided into two parts. The translation of the chapters in Zelenkov's book The World's Religions: Past and Presen makes the first part up, the second one is represented by expert commentary of the translation, which consists of five sections - analysis of the original text, approach to translation,translation method, problems of translation and translation shifts taxonomy.

Annotated translation: Do Women Pay for German Reunification?

The thesis focuses on translation of an extract of a dialogue from the book called Bezahlen die Frauen die Wiedervereinigung? and on commentary on this translation. Apart from the Introduction and Conclusion there are two parts that play central role: the Translation itself and the above mentioned Commentary. The Commentary consists of four chapters. Translation Analysis of the Original Text Based on Ch. Nord's Model describes extratextual and intratextual factors of the original text. Features of the Original Text and First Insights into Problems of Translation takes functional-structuralist approach, describing different levels of the language used, focuses on tricky parts in the translation and thus links the analysis of the original with the translation. Method of Translation sets strategy for the translation of the original, based on conclusions of the two previous chapters. Typology of Translation Solutions and Unavoidable Shifts - Concrete Examples puts the method into practice, gives examples and comments on problems.

Commented translation: Media and communication in the early modern period

This bachelor thesis includes an annotated translation from the German language. The text was chosen from an internet server www.historicum.net. The text consists of some articles from the part Media and communication in the early modern period. Chapters Letter, Book market, Monument, Fashion and Newspapers are translated. The commentary contains four parts. The opening part consists of an analysis of the original text. The analysis contains two parts. The first part is an analysis of extratextual and the second part is an analysis of intratextual factors and describes the specific qualities of the source text. Another part is a typology of translation problems, describing linguistic and cultural non-equivalence and defending the translator's solutions. The third part is a typology of shifts occuring in the translation. The commentary is concluded by the description of the translation method.
