Acoustic analysis of the vowel /æ/ in the Czech pronunciation of English
Šturm, Pavel ; Skarnitzl, Radek (advisor) ; Marková, Petra (referee)
The subject of the thesis is acoustic analysis of the open front vowel /æ/ in the read speech of Czech students of English. The thesis deals with the differences between Czech students and native speakers of British English, as well as the differences among individual Czech speakers. The focus on this particular area in the vocalic space derives from the widespread difficulty encountered at the acquisition of the open front vowel by Czech students. Foreign accent in general is nowadays of great interest, in both general and applied research. The theoretical part of the thesis is therefore concerned not only with issues of acoustic description of vowels (formants and vocal tract resonances) and vowel systems of the languages in question (including regional differences), but also with second language acquisition. Important concepts discussed here are contrast and linguistic categories, interference of native language, and the relationship between production and perception. Since a systematic description of Czech English is yet missing, the thesis aims to contribute a more thorough investigation in this area, which could also have practical application in ESL environment.

ŠOLLEROVÁ, Markéta
This Bachelor thesis deals with teaching English as a second language in pre-school education. The theme of the thesis is to compose a picture of good classroom practice when teaching English as a second language in a pre-school setting. The picture of good classroom practice in teaching English as a second language in pre-school education established by this thesis is developed based on professional publications, observations of lessons in pre-school settings, and interviews with parents and teachers who have personal experience with foreign language acquisition at an early age. In addition to composing a picture of good classroom practice with regard to teaching English in pre-school education, the goal of this Bachelor thesis is to both find specific examples of good classroom practice and to point out the risk of negative consequences on a child's speech development if foreign language lessons are conducted inappropriately. The picture of good classroom practice in teaching English in pre-school education is then compared with the real practice in a specific bilingual kindergaten. It was ascertained that during the teaching of a foreign language at an early age that the teacher should be a professional of early childhood education with good quality language skills as it is very important to provide a correct language model for the children. The themes, content, forms, and methods should fit to the specifics of pre-school age. During foreign language teaching it is also necessary to use visual aids and to change the activities often to acquaint the children with a foreign language naturally such as by using games throughout the whole day and to combine the learning with movement (multi-modal learning). It is important to use an individual approach, to cooperate with parents, and to ensure the continuity and progression of teaching between educational stages. It is very important to continue to support the child's native language during foreign language acquisition. English language acquisition is only suitable for children whose speech is adequately developed in their native language and who don't have any serious logopaedic impediment. If impediments exist or speech is not adequately developed, it is recommended to wait to begin second language instruction until the deficits are eliminated.
