Weinbergerová, Lenka ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
My diploma thesis on the basis of intersectionality analyzes the social construction of "otherness" in etnically mixed partnerships and how does it manifests and influences the self- conception of Czech women that are in the mixed relationships. Further, it analyzes how the partners "otherness" affects the position of the women in the society. In my thesis I work with the concept of transmitted stigma, because the etnical otherness is not constructed on the horizontal differences, but contains also classifing and assesing aspects, which may situate the mixed patnerships to the positions of dis/advantage. For my qualitative research I have chosen semi-structured interviews with women, that were born and live in the Czech Republic and are or was in etnically mixed relationship. Key words: mixed partnership, stigma, otherness, etnicity, race, intersectionality

The theoretical part includes the definition of the term subculture, main attributes of hip hop (sub)culture, and the definition of authenticity, the key concept of the dissertation. In dialogue with the findings of the hip hop studies of Western countries, this dissertation looks at the authenticity claims expressed in Czech rap music and the context and situations in which the question of authenticity of Czech rappers becomes important. The empirical part of the dissertation is based on the perspective of the insider research using a combination of qualitative methods: (1) semi structured interviews with twenty rappers (one of them female); (2) qualitative content analysis of selected rap lyrics; and (3) participant observation at different hip hop events. Chochola, Martin ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
This doctoral thesis deals with bertsolaritza - Basque poetic improvization - in its relation to language revival and politics in contemporary Basque country. In terms of methodology, this paper is based on anthropological fieldwork combined with the study of secondary data. Theoretical framework uses concepts of ethnicity and nationalism, anthropology of art, theory of poetry and performance as well as concepts of political anthropology. The issue is built on three fields: history of basque nationalism, language revival and bertsolaritza. Bertsolaritza is depicted as an artistic activity that participates on the construction of collective identity of euskaldunak (speakers of Basque). The core analysis is focused on 2013 Championship (Bertsolari Txapelketa Nagusia) in improvised poetry and its link to the basque political discourse 2011-2013. Bertsolaritza is to be understood as an expression of sociopolitical reflections within the frame of izquierda abertzale (nationalist left) as well as an open artistic reflection of a variety of socially relevant issues.
Income Shocks and Ethnic Group Bias
Hruban, Jiří ; Bauer, Michal (advisor) ; Horváth, Roman (referee)
Diploma Thesis Abstract JEL Classification Z13, O12, O13, Z91 Keywords income shock, endogeneity, ethnicity, instrumental variables Title Income Shocks and Ethnic Group Bias Author's e-mail 61618416@fsv.cuni.cz Supervisor's e-mail bauerm@fsv.cuni.cz Abstract The thesis explores how individual income shocks impact ethnic group bias using a survey dataset from Uganda and meteorological data. Previous research has shown that the majority of civil conflicts break down along ethnic lines, and that ethnic tribalism harms economic performance of countries. A better understanding of the causal mechanism behind ethnic bias could help alleviate both of those problems. The author finds that income shocks have no measurable effect on ethnic out-group bias, but they might influence ethnic in-group bias. Since the regression of ethnic bias variables on income proxies likely suffers from endogeneity, the author employs the copula endogeneity correction model, which, however, does not prove to perform well with a binary dependent variable. In addition, the author demonstrates that ethnic group bias is most likely not directly influenced by variations in rainfall and that instrumenting for income with rainfall variation leads to non- robust results with even a small violations of model assumptions.
Contacts and Archaeology - the Example of Avar Khaganate and Western Slavs
Michaličová Nováková, Jana ; Profantová, Naděžda (advisor) ; Štefan, Ivo (referee)
The presented work focuses on the comparison of the basic characteristics of cultures inhabitating the area of today's Czech republic and the area of the historical Avar Khaganate in the time period betweeen half of the 6th century to the beginning of 9th century. The groundwork for this comparison is the study of 10 sites - 5 settlements and 5 cemeteries. Two cemeteries and two settlements are located in the centre of Czech republic, two and two others are located in the centre of khaganate, the remaining two are located in the border area between them. These sites show us parallels between both preseneted cultures. We can observe the similarities in funerary customs and in patterns of houses and settlements as well. Movable artifacts, some of which we may describe as luxurious ones, also undeniably reflect contacts between the Khaganate and areas of today's Czech republic. Key words Slavs, Avars, Contacts, Ethnicity, Archaeology, Early Middle Ages
