Ptáčníková, Iveta ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
1 Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the topic of politicization of sexuality in South Africa in relation to sexual violence against children. Using qualitative content analysis the paper examines, how the "baby rape" phenomenon is described in South African media production and how it relates to the new democracy in the post-apartheid South Africa. Likewise, attention is paid to the issue of virginity testing, which is interpreted as a reaction to the "moral crisis" of the newly formed democratic nation. The examined issue is viewed in the wider context of social relations, therefore using an intersectional approach. The analytical aspect of the analysis includes the categories of race, gender, and sexuality. The intersectional concept analyzes the role of media representation in designing individual social categories and thus strengthening certain forms of oppression. The theoretical background of the work is based on black feminism and the Stanley Cohen's theory of moral panic. With analysing media representation it is examined the way the gender, sexuality, and race are studied and represented in order to answer the thesis question of how Western discourse intersects through these analytical categories. Keywords: media representation, qualitative content analysis, intersectionality, politization of...

Jacobs, Diana ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
The thesis focuses on representation of gender inequality in Czech lifestyle magazines for men. The main research question explores the ways in which men's magazines represent the issues of gender inequality. The research method used in this thesis is qualitative content analysis by Anselm Strauss and Juliet Corbin. The sample contains selected articles from Czech versions of the men's magazines Maxim and Esquire, covering all of 2016. The open coding process enabled labeling of the analyzed phenomena, discovering the prominent categories and their dimensions. Axial coding resulted in the reorganization of the categories, which emerged during open coding, by exploring the relationships between the categories and making connections between them. Selective coding identified the central phenomenon of the research. Male Dominance emerged as the core category, integrating the other categories - Manifestations of Gender Inequality, Men's Fear of Gender Equality and Partial Refutation of the Masculine Perspective - around the central phenomenon. Kvítková, Alena ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
The present bachelor thesis is concerned with media representation of the European refugee crisis in chosen British newspapers during its peak at the turn of September and October 2015. The aim is to examine a sample consisting of four newspapers - which is balanced in terms of their type as tabloids and broadsheets as well as the party-press parallelism - the frameworks they use and the positivity or negativity of an overall media image of the refugee crisis. At first the thesis analyses media frameworks and media image of the respective newspapers The Guardian, The Times, The Daily Mirror and The Daily Mail, which are in the next step confronted and compared based on the different newspaper types. In this way the tendency towards different portrayal of events in left-wing vs. right-wing newspapers as well as tabloids vs. broadsheets is explored. Another important aspect of this paper is to deduce the overall most frequently used frameworks and the overall image of the refugee crisis from all of the articles from the four newspapers and to confront these results with British public opinion surveys. This allows us to test the theory that refugee crises are often enveloped in negativity or the theory that media and the public influence each other and therefore media can be used as a kind of probe...

Jaroš, Martin ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Dimitrov, Michal (referee)
This thesis analyzes the tendencies in the press of given era and the development of social discussion on burning of Lidice village and Klak and Ostrý Gruň settlements through discourse-historical approach and other sociological concepts. It specifically follows the level of awareness and media content of selected periodicals from the time of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the transitional period of the existence of the Slovak State, over 40 years of the communist era, until the renewed or newly created periodicals of the Velvet Revolution, to the present, meant 2017. Usually by decades, always on the anniversary date of the event. The thesis attempts to confirm the hypothesis that sensitive historical events tend to be interpreted with bias, in compliance with the current regime, through (in this case) printed media; were they owned by government, opposition, or even those who are seeking (political) impartiality.
