THE EFFECT OF AN INCREASING COVERAGE OF INVASIVE BLACK LOCUST ON BIRD COMMUNITIES IN FOREST STANDS

Biological invasions are one of the most important threats to global biodiversity and they were also found to negatively affect some bird species. Despite relatively large number of scientific studies dealing with the impacts of invasive plants on bird communities, their results are inconsistent, especially it is not clear how birds respond to increasing levels of expansion of invasive species in native species stands. Moreover, bird responses to plant invasions seem to depend on the ecological characteristics of individual bird species. This study contributes to elucidation of this problem; I investigated the impacts of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) invasion on bird communities in three types of forest stands with different levels of invasion: in stands containing solely the native oak (Quercus spp.), in partially invaded stands with different proportions of black locust and oak (mixed stands) and in pure black locust stands. Previous studies that examined birds in pure oak and pure black locust stands have found that they differ markedly in vegetation structure, but not in the total number of bird species. U.S. Invasion of Grenada - Reagan's Attempt at Democracy Promotion?

The concern of the thesis is the US Foreign Policy after Ronald Reagan took the office of the President of the USA. It deals with the question whether the US invasion of Grenada in October 1983 was in accordance with such policy. Apart from a general conception of Reagan's Foreign Policy which is important for understanding the development of events, the US policy towards Latin America is directly analysed. The thesis follows with the outlining of US-Grenada relations from 1979 which was the year during which a leftist coup d'état took place on Grenada until the invasion itself. Simultaneously there is also outlined the internal Grenadian agenda which played a crucial role in the whole context prior the US invasion. The invasion itself partly took place as a result of a turmoil, which was created by the power struggle within the leading party on Grenada. The thesis also analyses the consequences of the US invasion, especially debates over legitimacy of the whole action which took place on a domestic as well as international level. The goal of the thesis is to find and explain the causes that led the US and Ronald Reagan to invade the island of Grenada.

The media image of the Bay of pigs invasion of Cuba in the czechoslovakia contemporary press

This Master Thesis is called Media Image of the Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba in the Czechoslovakia Contemporary Press. Its aim is to show overall picture of how was the Invasion characterized by four contemporary daily newspapers - Rudé právo, Lidová demokracie, Mladá fronta a Obrana lidu. The first part of this thesis describes the historical background of the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Invasion itself, relationship between Cuba and Czechoslovakia, what was the media situation, censorship, propaganda and short introduction of the newspapers. Next part analyses the contemporary newspaper articles, which puts together media image of the Invasion. During the Cold War, the Invasion of the Bay of Pigs was the first serious conflict between Cuba and the USA.

The Cyprus Crisis in 1974 and the Role of the United Nations

This thesis explores the impact of the UN on the development of the Cyprus crisis from its beginning until its peak in 1974. This impact is analysed on two levels: 1. Negotiations of the Cyprus Crisis during the UN Security Council and General Assembly meetings and their effects on the escalation of the local situation in Cyprus. 2. Activities of the peacekeeping mission UNFICYP since its establishment in 1964 until the division of Cyprus ten years later. For the purpose of examination of the aforementioned, both detailed historical analyses, as well as theoretical concepts from international relations theory are used in this paper. The paper describes the evolution of the Cyprus Problem as a dynamic process, which needs to be perceived in its full extent, thus it is not concentrated only on the period of 1960s and 1970s, but describes original sources and causes of the conflict.

Parasite's life within the host cell.

Plasmodium falciparum is one of the most dangerous human intracellular single-celled pathogen. This thesis describes the invasion, the survival and the egress of the pathogen from the host cell (erythrocyte). The main topic of the thesis is the parasite's life within the host cell in a newly created compartment, parasitophorous vacuole. By exploding hundreds of proteins Plasmodium falciparum establishes number of unique modifications inside as well as on the surface of the host cell. Molecular mechanisms of amoeboid invasion of cancer cells

Tumour cell invasion is one of the most critical steps in malignant progression. It includes a broad spectrum of mechanisms, including both individual and collective cell migration, which enables them to spread towards adjacent tissue, and form new metastases. Understanding the mechanisms of cell spreading, and invasion, is crucial for effective anticancer therapy. Two modes of individual migration of tumour cells have been established in a three-dimensional environment. Mesenchymally migrating cells use proteases to cleave collagen bundles, and thus overcome the ECM barriers. Recently described protease-independent amoeboid mode of invasion has been discovered in studies of cancer cells with protease inhibitors. During my PhD study, I have focused on determining the molecular mechanisms involved in amoeboid invasion of tumour cells. We have examined invasive abilities in non-metastatic K2 and highly metastatic A3 rat sarcoma cell lines. We have shown that even though highly metastatic A3 rat sarcoma cells are of mesenchymal origin, they have upregulated Rho/ROCK signalling pathway. Moreover, A3 cells generate actomyosin-based mechanical forces at their leading edges to physically squeeze through the collagen fibrils by adopting an amoeboid phenotype. The last military dictatorship in Argentina in the years 1976 - 1983

(in English) The thesis discusses the government of the most recent military dictatorship in Argentina in 1976-1983. The first chapter defines the basic concepts that are important for the proper interpretation of the work and provides a brief overview of the political developments and the situation in the country in the 20th century that preceded the last military coup. The main part of the thesis gives the characteristics of the period 1976-1983, that is rise to power, action and fall of the military dictatorship with a reflection of the development of relations with the USA and Argentina in this period of time. It also delivers a view of the Falklands War, which accelerated the transition from dictatorship to democracy in Argentina. The work also includes insight into the present in the context of the impact of the seven-year military junta to Argentine society as well as the question of the future of the islands, in the context of the continuing recognition of Argentina's claims to sovereignty over the islands.

The Media Agenda of Daily The Times Prior the Invasion of Iraq and the Influence of Rupert Murdoch

Bachelor thesis "Media agenda of daily The Times prior the Iraq War and the influence of Rupert Murdoch", using a content analysis, examines the nature of The Times reporting on Iraq prior the 2003 invasion. It also looks into an overlap of the coverage of the newspaper and the publicly declared opinions of its proprietor, Rupert Murdoch. Using historical analysis, we examine his influence on the paper. First chapter presents the theories of role of media in the public space and its relations with politics. Second chapter describes the influence of Rupert Murdoch on British politics since his entry of British media market in 1969 until the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Third chapter depicts the historical events prior the military action with special focus on British politics, the reaction of British media and public opinion. Fourth chapter contains the content analysis with the description of British media landscape, the depiction of examined daily and the content analysis method and its results. The conclusion presents the results of the content analysis, connects it to the theories of media- politics relations, depicted in the first chapter, and interprets them.
