and Keywords "In the World through which I travel, I am endlessly creating myself." - Frantz Fanon In this thesis, one of my first aims, among others, is to discuss and put in perspective the different levels of identification that can coexist and contribute to the creation of a person. I want to understand the impact and the role played by the city in one's identity-building process by studying the self-perception of visibly black people in Prague and Paris. Why did I decide to work on blackness within the European context? I decided to work on blackness for many reasons, one being that blackness as much as whiteness are social constructs. However, when whiteness has a history of multiplicity, and white people are being granted individuality, blackness, on the other hand, is often seen as an encompassing term. Black people are perceived as a monolithic social group in every sense of the word, sharing the same history and past across the globe. It is because of the peculiarity of blackness, which is seen as a factor of global identity that I wanted to study that topic within Europe. Working on blackness in Europe is working on a topic that would look like an oxymoron. Indeed, Europe is associated with whiteness, and blackness is associated with Africa. Therefore, thinking about black Europeans or...

TITLE Representing History and Ethnography, Interacting with Heritage Analysing Museological Practices at the Huron-Wendat Museum ABSTRACT This master thesis is an analysis of the current specific actions on representation and interaction taken in contemporary ethnographic museums. The aim is to highlight museology pathways used to represent local indigenous culture and to explore how the public is involved with and relates to these specific discourses on heritage. Special attention will be devoted to the study of the shift of museums from authoritative places of education to socially inclusive spaces. The mission of heritage professionals in terms of representation will be analysed, as well as their work on the notions of accessibility and involvement for and with the public. The Huron-Wendat Museum in Wendake, Québec, serves to investigate these museum practices. Drawing from thorough fieldwork and extensive secondary literature, this master thesis will further probe the prevailing notions of identity, continuity and unity of the new museology in a postcolonial context. Katolická reakce na republikánskou výzvu: Nepřátelé brazilské katolické církve optikou "dobrého tisku" (1889-1930)

When Brazil abolished the monarchy and became a republic in 1889, it also embraced an entirely different model of the relationships between State and Catholic Church. Unlike the previous Portuguese colonial (1500-1822) and imperial governments (1822-1889) that exercised strict control over the institutional church known as padroado régio ("royal patronage"), the new regime of the "Old Republic" (1889-1930) gave the Brazilian Catholic hierarchy extraordinary degree of freedom. But at the same time, it deprived it of its traditional privileges - from the status of the official "state church", to secularization of marriages, cemeteries and public education. Facing an unprecedented situation, the Brazilian Catholic Church had to redefine its positions towards the state and society and look for alternative models of mutual relationships both at home and abroad. Based on the officially-sanctioned Catholic press and especially the influential biweekly magazine Mensageiro da Fé, this thesis attempts to reconstruct the perceptions and attitudes of the institutional Catholicism towards challenges brought by the regime change, tracking the image formation of new and re-formulation of old enemies and creation of a new vision for the Catholic role in recently secularized Brazil. keywords: secularization;...
Environmentální rizika v důsledku dlouhodobého sucha
Křížová, Markéta
The thesis talks about the environmental risks as the outcome of long-term drought. In the first parts of the thesis drought is examined as a phenomena, it talks about the importance of thorough knowledge of this phenomena paying attention also to the reasons for its occurrence and describing the different types of drought. The thesis further tries to describe the impact of drought on the environment and the landscape, and monitor changes that happen there. The work also deals with strategic documents as regulation tools which should help mitigate the negative impact drought has on the environment or prevent them completely. These documents are analysed and their usefulness and the degree to which they help solve the problems given is considered. In the practical part the water balance of the selected area with special degree of protection is evaluated with the prospect until 2100. Based on maps created in the program ArcGIS it was assessed whether the area has become drier and how dry it will be in the next decades. This part of the work further evaluates the flow rates in the chosen watercourse in the examined area, provided by the Czech hydrometeorological institute. It was found that the area has negative water balance which means it is becoming drier. Changes in the flow of water (especially less flow) in the river Punkva are not statistically significant. Based on this data it cannot be said that the flow of water is decreasing. It is possible that if the data were collected for longer time (perhaps 30 to 40 years) the changes in the flow of water could be proved. There is open space for further research. The above mentioned findings can be used as basis for further expert works dealing with this problematics.

East against the West? Representations of war in egodocuments of British and Russian participants of Crimean War 1853-1856. Doctoral thesis Mgr. et Mgr. Petr Wohlmuth ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis adheres to genre of historical anthropology of war and military. It draws on two theoretical sources. The first consists of paradigms of cultural and social anthropol- ogy, more specifically symbolic historical anthropology in the tradition of Geertz, Darnton, Sahlins and others. The second represents the cultural history of war in the tradition of Kee- gan, Hanson, Lynn or Isabel Hull. The research question is focused on the culture of war during the Crimean War, especially during the Crimean campaign and siege and defense of Sevastopol in 1854/55, as its variables were represented in egodocuments of its Russian and British participants. Crimean War has been the subject of many historiographic texts, but most of them were essentially conservative, relying on national, ideological and civilizational labeling instead of deeper analysis. This doctoral thesis analyses in detail first the formal or- der of the above-mentioned culture of war, but more importantly, it analyses using the method of thick description its logico-meaningful relations, the hierarchy of levels of mean- ing in the sense how the culture of war...

Kristlík, Tomáš ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Janský, Bohumír (referee) ; Munoz, Arturo G. (referee)
This dissertation aims to provide a strategic qualitative economic analysis of the illicit drug trafficking industry as it evolved in its modern form across the Americas in the latter part of the 20th century, with principal focus on Colombia and Mexico, and to assess its impact on the security environment in the Americas with the ultimate ambition to provide tangible recommendations for complex disruptive countermeasures. The key premise upon which all the conclusions are later formulated is that trafficking in illicit substances is primarily an entrepreneurial activity aimed to generate profit and economic approach to the issue therefore yields the most promising prospects for tangible results. Narcoterrorism in its own merit, and drug-related violence in general, is contemplated, analyzed and explained as one of the key tactics inherent to the trafficking business model. Finally, a critical assessment of existing counter-narcotics strategies is performed in order to outline deficiencies of these policies with the aim to provide alternative and more effective countermeasures against illicit trafficking.

VYŠNÝ, Peter: State, Law, and Everyday Life in Aztec Tenochtitlan. Dissertation. Charles University, Faculty of Arts, Centre for Ibero-American Studies. PhD Programme: Ibero- American Studies. Field of Study: History. Adviser: doc. Markéta Křížová, Ph.D. Prague, 2018. 384 pp. The present dissertation, under the title of State, Law, and Everyday Life in Aztec Tenochtitlan, is the result of the research of a society that existed in the Aztec city-state of Tenochtitlan from its founding (about AD 1325) to its conquest by the Spaniards (1519 - 1521). In the dissertation, based on historical sources and secondary literature, three essential, complementary aspects of this society are examined, namely: 1. its organization and functioning, whose character indicates that Tenochtitlan was a consolidated (urban) state; 2. its legal order, which was developed and systematically exercised by the state; and 3. typical forms of everyday life of its members (of different categories). By exploring the three aspects of the society existing in Tenochtitlan, the following aim of the dissertation was achieved: 1. to examine the state organization, the legal order and the everyday life forms of the inhabitants of pre-Hispanic Aztec Tenochtitlan, both in their interrelated contexts and in the diachronic perspective; and...
