Eurasianism and the "Skify" group 1930-1933
Hauser, Jakub ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Jančárková, Julie (referee)
Eurasianism was a strong intellectual movement among the interwar community of émigrés from Russia and it was reflected in a number of fields in the arts and sciences, including history, linguistics, literature and the fine arts. Transplanting this theory into the fine arts signified a departure from the Western artistic tradition and an attempt to create a new visual code that would express the idea of the wild and anti-European roots of Russian culture. In the large émigré community in Prague this concept was reflected most powerfully in the work of a group called the Scythians (Skify), which was founded at the end of the 1920's by the painter and professor of Ukrainian fine arts studies in Prague, Sergei Mako. The group's programme was formulated by its chair, the art historian Jaromír Pečírka, and the writer and journalist František Kubka, both of whom were linked to the editorial office of the German-language daily Prager Presse. The group had three exhibitions between 1931 and 1933 at Denis's French Institute in Prague and its membership base comprised Nikolai Rodionov and Alexandr Orlov, both of whom were students of Mako, and the painter Grigori Musatov, the sculptors Evgeni Brzezinski and Alexandr Golovin, and the Paris-based painters Boris Grigoriev and Mykola Hlushchenko. Czech artists exhibited...

The importance of EU as an external factor on democratic consolidation. The cases of the Czech Republic and Slovakia
Hilleren, Ann Katrin ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (referee)
The breakdown of communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe has offered scholars in the field of transition and regime change theory, and comparative politics in general, a major opportunity to test out former theories, but also formulate new ones. Obviously, no theory is alone applicable to the complexity of the transitions. There is a variety of cases, each with distinct developments before, during and after the transition to democracy has been completed. Some common features are still possible to extract when studying regime change in a region. As for Central and Eastern Europe, one of the most outstanding characteristics of the transition to democracy has been the visibility and importance of external factors. Previously the view was held that external factors were essentially secondary to domestic processes of regime change. The studies on Central and Eastern Europe carried out the last 15 years might show another picture, and that leads us to the core of this paper. How important have the external factors been? After providing the reader with some relevant theories on democracy and démocratisation, the focus is turned to the examination of external influences on transition in this region. In order to narrow down the complexity of the subject, the European Union has been chosen as the variable to...

Culture, gender and power
Ferrarová, Eva ; Soukup, Václav (advisor) ; Matějů, Martin (referee) ; Pavlík, Petr (referee)
The dissertation focuses on a theoretical analysis of feminist theories in the context of social and cultural evolutionary changes. Special attention is paid to the culturological connections between gender, culture, and power. The aim of my reflexion is to describe concrete solutions offered by various feminist theories and schools from the perspective of improvement of the women's position in the society. The key of understanding the women's position in the society are gender behavioural patterns and gender stereotypes accepted and further reproduced by the majority culture. Hence attention is paid to a transformation of these patterns and stereotypes and a study of reasons why women were excluded from public life. Theoretical and empirical analysis of the women's exclusion from public life and searching for an answer to the question why women and the femininity are on the value ladder in the society behind men and the masculinity is a significant part of the dissertation. The results obtained by this research were used to verify how much gender influences basic social institutions (family, education system, labour market, and politics) in the contemporary Czech society.

Contemporary revaluation of southern local color fiction
Pegues, Dagmar ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (advisor) ; Ulmanová, Hana (referee) ; Ewell, Barbara Claire (referee)
The objective of this study is to offer an examination of the works of Kate Chopin and Grace King, representatives of the genre of Louisiana "Local Color" fiction, and to introduce a new perspective on their fiction that is equally distanced from the national/local dichotomy and the feminist interpretative framework. This study interrogates selected aspects of the category of race in the fiction of Kate Chopin and Grace King in order to reclaim the importance of race for regional Aesthetics and to offer an alternative view on the existing interpretations that emphasize the feminist themes of their fiction and, ultimately, to expand such interpretations. A replacement of the existing theoretical frameworks applied to the works of these two authors by postcolonial theory offers a new perspective on the category of race in their fiction without reducing its complexity and interconnection with the category of gender and region. As a result, the insight into the formation of region-specific racial knowledge testifies to the complexity of the issue of race within the framework of Local Color fiction. The focal point of this examination is the representation of racial stereotypes in the fiction of Chopin and King.
