Kotík, Jan ; Zemanová, Štěpánka (advisor) ; Kuchařová, Alžběta (referee)
In the 21st century the significance of the EU energy agenda has been growing constantly. The European Union tried to overcome energy crises actively by creating European Security Strategy. The energy agenda has two major parts -- energy security and climate protection. The 2009 Czech EU presidency chose as one of its priorities energy policy. In particular, it promoted support of nuclear energy, deepening of the European neighbourhood policy by creating its own project Eastern Partnership and developed a discussion about Southern Corridor and its main project gas pipeline Nabucco. The aim of this thesis is to show, whether the Czech presidency was pursuing its own national interests by promoting energy policy, or the interests of the whole Union. The structure of this thesis consists of three parts. In the first one, the Council of European Union is described, as well as its functions, possibilities of agenda setting and its evaluation. In the second part, the European energy policy is specified together with the influencing factors for choosing energy policy as one of the Czech priorities. In the last chapter, functions of the Czech presidency are examined and the presidency is evaluated according to criteria mentioned in the first chapter.

Reception of Burke's philosophical enquiry in the German - language area in the nineteenth century
Tyc, Ondřej ; Foglarová, Eva (referee) ; Hlobil, Tomáš (advisor)
This work is concerned with the reception of Edmund Burke's Philosophical Enquiry in the German - language area in the nineteenth century with the focus on examination of the ways, in which authors of wide range of nineteenth century currents respond to Burke's theory. We tried to find the differences and affinities in the aproach of various German aestheticians to this model example of British eighteenth century empirism. Despite of the great individual diversity between their own philosophical principles, these autors seems o be almost unanimous in their rejection of Burke's system along with his observations (in contrast with thinkers of eighteenth century) and particularly in refusal his separation of the Sublime and the Beautiful. Burke is in the nineteenth century discussed primarily either in context of the concept of Sublime, or in connection with the insufficiency of his empirical, sensualist theory.

Schwarzenberg's Primogeniture. The Hluboká and Krumlov Branch
Spalová, Michaela ; Županič, Jan (advisor) ; Dvořáková, Markéta (referee)
This thesis deals with the primogeniture (the Hluboká and Krumlov Branch) of the distinguished Schwarzenberg dynasty of princes. The Schwarzenberg originally come from the German Lower Franconia and they became permanently rooted in Bohemia as late as in the half of 17th century. The division of the dynasty into the primogeniture (the Hluboká and Krumlov Branch) and the secundogeniture (the Orlík Branch) occurred in 1802 by virtue of the stipulation of the last will of Ferdinand of Schwarzenberg from 1703. The Schwarzenberg's primogeniture owned an extensive landed property, whose greatest part was situated on the territory of Bohemia. Its members were renowned mainly for being exceptionally capable landlords who succeeded in creating a perfectly sophisticated economic system on their estates, belonging among the most advanced in Europe at the time. Their activity culminated in the second half of the 19th century and also at the beginning of 20th century. However, the ensuing years were not so successful for the Hluboká and Krumlov Schwarzenberg Branch. After the origination of an independent Czechoslovakia, the family lost a great part of their property in Bohemia due to a land reform. During the Second World War, their entire property was confiscated by Gestapo on behalf of the Greater German...

The Poet and the Chronicler. Reflection of the Spanish American reality in the prose of Octavio Paz and Carlos Monsiváis
Riebová, Markéta ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Kudlová, Klára (referee) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (referee)
1 THE POET AND THE CHRONICLER. Reflection of the Spanish American reality in the prose of Octavio Paz and Carlos Monsiváis ABSTRACT Analysing selected essays by Octavio Paz and literary crónicas by Carlos Monsiváis we try to demonstrate that the relationship between the literary and journalistic works of the two authors is that of complementariness rather than opposition as many literary critics have understood it. Joint reading of the works of these two perhaps most important Mexican intellectuals of the second half of the 20th century facilitates their understanding as both Paz's and Monsiváis's critical thinking comes out of the 19th century Mexican liberal tradition. The first chapter deals with the literary representation of the crucial year of 1968 in Mexico in the Critique of the pyramid (Crítica de la pirámide, 1970) by Octavio Paz and in Days to remember (Días de guardar, 1970) by Carlos Monsiváis. We concentrate on the metaphor and the irony as different modes of historical imagination of the studied authors, on the sources of their figurative expression (holistic archetypal conception of the world in contrast to the fragmenting use of polyphony) and the tone which the authors use to address their readers. We consider the ideas of Hayden White, Paul Ricoeur and M. M. Bakhtin as our theoretical...

Using Old Testament Themes and Their Original Interpretation in the Works of John Steinbeck
Straková, Kateřina ; Čapek, Filip (advisor) ; Sláma, Petr (referee)
Using Old Testament Themes and their Original Interpretation in the works of John Steinbeck 5 The issue of my thesis is the reflection of biblical themes and narratives in secular literature. In the concrete, I am focusing on the specific interpretation of Old Testament themes in the works of an American author of the 1st half of the 20 th Century, John Steinbeck. From his novels, I have chosen three for the analysis - To a God Unknown, The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden. I approached the novels with criticism, yet I did not strive to give the stories a meaning different from the intention of the author. I am focusing especially on biblical symbolism used in the novels and on parallelisms between biblical and Steinbeck's narratives. Both the symbolism and the parallelisms are traced in each novel separately, yet I try to point to the motives which are used in all of the novels chosen, e.g. settling the "promissed land". Steinbeck starts with simple symbols and then he passes to more complicated and elaborated ones. The symbolism of first names is a good example for this. Steinbeck starts with simple symbolism in the novel To a God Unknown, a symbolism I called direct symbolism where a character bears the same name as his/her biblical pattern. In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck elaborates what I...

Jiří Mahen's poetry
Karlíková, Lucie ; Heczková, Libuše (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
This thesis examines the early period of Jiří Mahen's poetry, i.e. his poems published only in magazines and the first two books of poetry Plamínky and Balady. It follows formation of Mahen's poetics in the context of trends in transformation of poetics in Czech literature at the turn of 19. and 20. century and also in relation to the categories of subjectivity, stylization, synthesis and life. For the early period of Mahen's poetry is symptomatic the reaction to decadent poetics, aim to overcome a chaos towards the expression of life virtue, found especially in nature world and in the principle of everlasting movement which guarantees the vitality. The awareness of fragmentary base of reality is expressed in plurality of stylizations and in woolgathering among expressive poetics. Re-establish belief in practical social power of art leds to the poetry inspired by anarchistic ideas. Mahen tends in the book of poetry Balady to the statement of the idea of new synthesis. His poetry differs in Balady the most markedly from the poetics of his generation group represented by poets Šrámek, Gellner and Toman using the components evoking "Lumír's" poetics. O. Weinnger and F. Nietzsche conceptions are the most expressivly reflected in this book.

The status of woman in the work of Teréza Novaková
Slámová, Dana ; Velek, Luboš (referee) ; Kvaček, Robert (advisor)
Tereza Novakova was a significant personality of Czech culture at the turn of 19th and 20th century. She devoted her life to art and journalism, took part in the feminist movement and was deeply concerned in etnographic studies. My baccalaureate work is specialized in Novakova's fictional and journalistic work. The first section is dedicated to Karolina Svetla's influence on Tereza Novakova since in her eyes she represented not only a pattern but she meant for her a lot as her friend and adviser. Next two essential sections show the portrait of woman in author's publicistic and fictional work. Especially through her journalistic activity Novakova reacted to some aspects of the contemporary social evolution where she focused her attention first of all to the three primary areas of emancipatory efforts - education, occupation and woman suffrage. The part concerning the fictional literature refers to the work of rural realism as a historical source. The aim of this chapter using the means of micro-social probe is to describe woman's position in rural background with an accent on the insight into the mind, attitude and values of individual.
