Evolution of the idea of sustainable development with the social sciences
Raušová, Zuzana ; Soukup, Václav (referee) ; Lapka, Miloslav (advisor)
It is now evident that the current ecological crisis rise from the western approach to what is considered to be a "development". Increasing production and consumption of all kinds of material goods has been considered as a proof of prospering and happy society for several last centuries. The approach was established during the period of the European Enlightenment which gave birth to the belief of human exceptionality. No more God or natural powers but a man and his interests have ruled the world since then. Social sciences adored the conception of never ending progress until the 20th century. But increasing population and its needs started to endanger the environment and a stability of world ecosystems around that time. The ecological crisis was suddenly reflected among both natural and social sciences and it was obvious that we needed a brand new approach which would substitute the idea of economical progress in a way. The sustainable development concept has taken this part since 70's. It emphasizes non-materialistic values such as shared responsibility, solidarity, tolerance or equality. These values become even more up to date nowadays during the financial crisis.

The Puzzle Novel
Stock, Richard Thomas ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (advisor) ; Peprník, Michal (referee) ; Miller, J. Hillis (referee)
This dissertation is based on the claim that the study of the novel has not capitalized on the designation of the novel's unique properties by thinkers early in the twentieth century. My specific determination of the puzzle novel is in a sense merely one example of the kind of study that I see as necessary to further our understanding of both the novel and narrative. I see the effort of narratology in the twentieth century as a necessary project, but ultimately a failure at its own goals. Theory of the novel, meanwhile, seemed better poised to produce useful criticism in the 1930s, but since then has not had the influence on scholarship that it should have had. To deal with this lack, various philosophical works are discussed and used in the dissertation, especially those from Gilles Deleuze and Maurice Blanchot. Three novels are studied in detail as puzzle novels, and although the novels are chosen purposefully, they do not constitute a complete set: Ulysses (1922) by James Joyce, which I call the first puzzle novel in the terms of this study; Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (1973), the premier postmodern novel, and also an extreme puzzle novel; and Prisoner's Dilemma (1988) by Richard Powers, a puzzle novel that shows the true possibilities of the novel form. This study does not seek to make absolute...

Consultatio as a genre of contemporary religious-political controversy and Consultatio of J. A. Comenius
Balík, Vojtěch
The Latin term consultatio (consultation) in the 16th and 17th centuries took the headlines primarily in specialized medical publications, and later in legal as well. It seems that this term then derivatively became popular in written public debate, or rather in the religious-political controversy. Formally as consultatio (often accompanied by attributes such as utilis, salubris, orthodoxa, catholica...) were presented not only serious professional works, but very often pamphlets etc. However, if Comenius decided to launch its flagship life's work just as Consultatio, he surely just referred to the traditional genre, but - as in other titles of his works - he reached into his deep sense of the word and engaged it in the service of his plan. In addition, as we know, he had before his eyes a real consultation as well, the assembly or meeting of politicians, representatives of interreligious dialogue, etc.
