It analyses an extensive and representative sample of Czech language material (text, system and empirical language data) and attempts to reconstruct the Czech linguistic picture of Ostrava. We are focusing on what frames the picture of Ostrava is composed of, i. e. how it is predominantly portrayed by the users of the Czech language, how they narrate about it. At the same time our aim is to present Ostrava as a significant Czech cultural and social phenomenon evoked by such lexical units and structured by such conceptual means that are unmistakably "Ostravian" in the text...

This diploma thesis tries to answer this question based on a content analysis of articles in the six most-read online newswebsites in the Czech Republic and users' discussions connected to them in 2015-2019. The theoretical basis of the work is the media construction of reality, which the author tries to apply in practice to the topic of the non-profit sector using the method of media framing. Nováková, Barbora ; Vranka, Marek (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
The dissertation called 'Framing of Mental Illness in Selected Media Outputs Focused on Destigmatization' explores how the documentary series 'Life Behind the Wall', online documentary series 'You are not alone', an audio documentary series 'My therapy' communicate the theme of mental health. The work aims to find out how selected journalistic projects framed the issue of mental illness. The theoretical part of the work first deals with mental illness, the concept of stigma and the role of the media in its transmission. It also focuses on destigmatization and defining the most important destigmatization approaches. The next part presents the theoretical basis of concepts such as the influence of the media, agenda-setting and framing. The analytical part presents 10 frameworks, which have been identified using the method of grounded theory. How selected online media report about death of czech athletes?
Řehák, Matěj ; Macková, Veronika (advisor) ; Chladová, Marta (referee)
Czech football players František Rajtoral, David Bystroň, Pavel Pergl and hockey player Adam Svoboda have all lost their lives in time period between years 2017 a 2019. All of the mentioned deaths were caused by suicide. Death and suicide discourses are both very sensitive topics in media, although they are quite common. There are not even much handbooks or manuals how to cover these incidents properly. Ethical and moral codex plays a much bigger role here because of sensitive perception of death and suicide in society. Media still try to be more popular than their rivals, thus they turn to tabloidization even in reports about deaths of athletes. These incidents meet usual news values as negativity, surprise and relationship to elite people, so they are usually very popular. Responsible journalism and cautiousness are necessary in these cases, otherwise there is a risk of misinterpretation of reality between media consumers and also have negative impact on people suffering from suicidal tendencies. Research of this essay focuses on analyzing the articles about mentioned sportsmen, which should reveal problematic aspects of professional news reporting about these kinds of events.
Framing of Industry 4.0 in the Czech media in the period 2013-2018
El Bournová, Hana ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
1 Annotation Industry 4.0, also known as "the fourth industrial revolution" consisting of the digitization and automation of industry, is a relatively new topic in the Czech media field. Not so new topic is digitization in general, which is a process of implementing digital technologies in various areas of production and society. Over time, the arguments of both academic sides, optimists and critics of digital progress were stabilized in two antagonistic paradigms, with both groups of arguments can be found in the media discourse. The work will also examine the neutral approach, which does not benefit from any of the extreme opposites. The thesis will examine the overall framing of the topic and the similarity between media presentation and academic literature. Participants in the academic debate on the digital age can be found, among others, among digital media theorists. They can in principle be divided into two main parties. Optimists (Negroponte, Jenkins, Mařík) in principle support the new possibilities that digitization brings, while critics (McChesney, Spitzer, Morozov) point out that digital progress is dangerous. On the one hand, digital progress and robotization is being showed as a benefit, but on the other hand, academics warn against the fall of society and the negative side of the digital age....

Hanušová, Anna ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis investigates the evolution of news coverage of water-related issues in the Czech daily press from 2014 to 2019. Its theoretical part describes the relationship between mass media and the environment. The characteristics of environmental news are explained more in detail and in the context of environmental topics' features, journalistic routines, news normative demands and economic pressure in the media industry. The topic of the thesis is linked to the media theories about news values, gatekeeping, agenda-setting and framing as well. There is also a review of the studies examining news coverage of the environment and a brief description of the water management situation in the Czech Republic. The methodical part introduces the research goal and previous studies which were used as a base for the method in this paper. The results of the content analysis enabled to describe the news about water issues quantitatively and to explain its features and development according to the theoretical framework and previous findings. This thesis concluded that Czech dailies do not treat the topic of water issues as very important, they are event-oriented, dependent on the official sources and focused on risk-related topics. This can limit public awareness of the problem with decreasing water...

Lohynský, Jan ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The role of the media within the European migration crisis is the main topic of this work. In the theoretical part I explain the concepts and theories, as well as describe the media systems of the Czech Republic and Austria as countries of interest of the further research. The 'State-of-the-art' section then also presents the research into the coverage of the European migration crisis conducted so far. Some of the studies provide not only interesting findings but also inspiration for my own research part. In the practical part I describe the employed methodology which is formed by a quantitative content analysis. Selected daily newspapers in the Czech Republic and Austria were selected for the research. 502 articles in total were coded to provide data for the findings. The findings provide answers to 7 research questions based on the prevalence of the articles within the selected media, themes of the articles, actors present in the coverage, terms used to describe those trying to enter the EU, employed frames, offered explanations and suggested solutions. The findings show both similarities but also differences between the two countries of interest. The findings can only be generalized to a certain extent as the research has its limitations. However, it can be stated that the work dives deep enough...

But mainly it focuses on summarization of current studies and methodological approaches to research of attribute agenda setting and creation of media image of political candidates. In total, sixteen studies from various media environments have been analysed. Result of the theoretical part is widely applicable set of 29 micro-attributes which five macro-attributes and two meta-attributes (as newly defined category) are consisted of. Besides the set of attributes, this thesis creates and defines brand new method of analysis through Coefficient of media affection which allows to evaluate the affective dimension of media image. Šauerová, Jana ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
Diploma thesis "Framing of sea arrivals of the migrants and refugees in the Italian press in 2011 and 2014" examines how Italian newspapers cover the topic of sea arrivals of migrants and refugees from North Africa during the Arab Spring and an exponential increase of arrivals in 2014, which heralded the migration crisis. At the first part of the thesis, theoretical concepts are summarized, including framing, securitization theory and moral panic, and researches of media representation and framing of the immigration. The theoretical section is followed by the contextual part. Within the analysis, the work is based on the concept of framing and therefore the primarily observed aspects are the emphasized or hidden aspects of the phenomenon. A combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis was chosen as the approach for describing the framing of the topic. The aim of the qualitative analysis is a deeper understanding of the analyzed material, generation of a set of specific frames, their detailed description and definition, and subsequent designation of hypotheses. The aim of the quantitative content analysis is to quantify the specified variables and, based on the outcomes, to compare both periods and journals and to confirm or disprove hypotheses. Research results suggest that despite...
