The OSS in Vietnam during the Second World War
Do, Phuong Thuy ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
The United States engagement in Vietnam began during the Second World War. With military bases established in China, the U.S. took part in fighting the Japanese troops in the Pacific theatre. When France surrendered to Nazi Germany in 1940, Japan would take over the French Indochina and the war would spread to Vietnam as well. In order to collect intelligence on Japanese targets, the Americans needed to operate secret services on the ground. After the Japanese coup de main in 1945, they would eventually partner with Ho Chi Minh and his organization Viet Minh. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the wartime predecessor of the CIA, provided intelligence training and equipment, while the Viet Minh would assist with valuable information on Japanese troops. To some extent, the OSS helped Ho Chi Minh and Viet Minh accede to power in Vietnam after the war.
Czech Society and Soviet Army 1968-1991. Some issues from the Soviet perspectives.
Zavorotchenko, Igor ; Mücke, Pavel (advisor) ; Wohlmuth, Petr (referee)
Abstract. This paper explores the memories of Soviet participants in the presence of Soviet troops in Czechoslovakia after 1968. Based on previously existing and new sources, information on the state of the media in the Central Group of Forces is summarized. At the same time, memories and assessments of events by their witnesses are given. Next, the historical myth about the presence of units of the National People's Army of the GDR on the territory of Czechoslovakia in 1968 and their actions against the local population was studied. An attempt is made to interpret this "false memory", widespread in the memoirs of Soviet narrators, to identify the causes of such a myth and its symbolic meaning for those who remember and listen. Also, it is discussed the problem of interpretation and evaluation of the events of 1968 in Czech and Russian collective memories, the attitude of both sides to the definition of the troop's invasion as an act of occupation. Revealed a diametrically opposite perception of this problem by both parties. This discussion naturally brings to the issue of the differences in Czech and Russian historical memories regarding the events of May 1945 and August 1968, the place of these events in symbolic memory and the reflection of these differences in relation of both sides to monumental...

It focuses on contemporary press with both daily and weekly periodicity and attempts to point out, what are the main themes in connection with the occupation which the allied forces engaged in. The journal Zprávy serves as a complementary journal, which was a propaganda instrument of the Soviet Union. The magazines Květy, Signál and Mladý svět were also chosen because of their edition. The crucial part of the work is the analysis of selected periodicals, in which I`ve pointed out the most important articles, which have been published in connection with the intervention and subsequent occupation. Foreign Legions Waffen-SS
Kacerovský, Tomáš ; Čížek, Martin (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the foreign Waffen-SS legions that had been fighting alongside the German army in the Second World War. The Nazis came out with the idea of establishing an international military force, that would consist of citizens of the currently occupied countries. The key thesis is based on the thought that the Nazis managed to create such legions, that consisted of men who decided to fight against the Soviet Union and Bolshevism, led by the idea of being a part of a so called European army. The first chapter focuses on the elementary factors within the establishment of the foreign legions. Though the Nazis knew they had been acting against their own ideology, and Adolf Hitler himself views the legions rather sceptically, Waffen-SS needed more soldiers in favour of becoming a fully competent armed force. The second chapter speaks about the ordinary volunteers, who decided to serve in the legions and about their motivation. This chapter is also facing an issue in terms of distinguishing each sort of the legion members, who served based on various different reasons and ideas. The third chapter refers about the important and famous people who served in the foreign legions or who had been publicly supporting them and had been calling other potential volunteers to arms. The last...

Explanation of professional and educational visions of pupils in the ninth grade
Vařeková, Karolína ; Remr, Jiří (advisor) ; Petrúšek, Ivan (referee)
1 Abstract This thesis is focused on the interpretation of the ninth-grade pupil's conceptions of hierarchical segmentation of society based on profession and obtained degree of education. Its main goal is to clarify student's perception of inequalities of social status among different work positions and to understand impact of study achievements on their vertical grouping. Theoretical part deals with sociological theories to explain the role of occupation and education in formation and maintenance of social stratification. Analytical part validates theoretical explanations by qualitative research conducted within one ninth class. Research questions are answered by qualitative analysis of data acquired by in-depth semi-structured interviews. Student's conceptions correspond to the basic three-dimensional hierarchical classification of the social layers defined in theoretical part. Mutual inequalities of those layers depend mainly on the level of work position which is related to particular layers. Pupils perceive different social status among vertically segmented vocational groups to be justified because individuals within those categories are distinguished by different personality traits. Achievement of specific social status depends to a great extent on educational performance, which is a measure of...
