Pehal, Martin ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Spalinger, Anthony John (referee) ; Stauder, Andreas (referee)
is study is composed of two units: manuscript of the author's publication Interpreting Ancient Egyptian Narratives: A Structural Analysis of the Tale of Two Brothers, the Anat Myth, the Osirian Cycle, and the Astarte Papyrus (Nouvelles études orientales, Bruxelles-Fernelmont: EME, 2014) and an additonal chapter entitled Accommodating Ambivalence: Case of the Doomed Prince and His Dog, which follows directly a er the Index of the first unit and which extends the applied methodology to yet another New Kingdom mythological narrative, the so-called Tale of the Doomed Prince. Methodologically, the author follows the neo-structuralist approach. Both studies explain the strong configurational character of ancient Egyptian (mythological) thought which has the ability to connect various ontological levels of human experience with the surrounding world into complex synchronic structures. ese symbolical systems are shown to be mediating between the various cultural paradoxes which were inherent to ancient Egyptian society. Axial role in this process is a ributed to the institution of positional kingship represented by the Pharaoh. Its transformative function is also put into relation to the special status of female characters who are shown to play the part of the "powerful powerless ones" further personifying...
Analysis of a cosmic egg motif in creation myths
Tvrdá, Pavlína ; Král, Oldřich (advisor) ; Hrdlička, Josef (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to compare similar cosmogonic narratives in Indian and Chinese culture. The most important elements are the motives of the egg and the giant/god who is formed from it. Comparative method consist of the comparison of the meanings and interpretations of the motives of these two elements, depending on the expectations and character of the source of this mythological narrative. Final findings are, that the importance of both motives in the texts and their participation in the process of creation of the world change chronologically, due to changes in religious, philosophical and social preferences. In Indian cultural environment in the begining, the vague motive of the egg slowly emerges and becomes a single creative element, gaining importance and continues to the stage where it reaches the same level of importance as the cosmic being. The primordial being on the other hand, loses its function of cosmic matter and passes it to the egg. The being itself then plays an active role rather than an object. China, for its religious scepticism suppressed motive of the egg until it was completely removed from texts. The primary role is played by the cosmic giant whose role is not focused on the creation of the world itself but the desintegration of the giants body, representing fission...
The Snake as Means of Reflection in the Texts about Artists from the German Romantic Period
Balcarová, Markéta ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee) ; Bartl, Andrea (referee)
The submitted doctoral thesis examines the function and performance of the motive of a snake in four selected texts about artists of the German romantic period and perceives the snake as an attribute reflecting the problems of the artistic existence and a way to the artistic work, possibly of the artistic work at all. When interpreting the single motives of the snake, three-phase procedure as applied by Erwin Panofsky in description of the motives in the pictures has been chosen by analogy for literary texts. The interpretation is based on the structural position of the motive of the snake in the text and its performance in the text. Subsequently, the principal role is revelation of contexts which updates the given motive of the snake - in particular they are biblical snakes, mythical snakes and a serpentine line as a line of beauty which was the subject of the period aesthetic discourse. The meaning of the motive of the snake in the texts is given primarily by the mutual interaction of theme contexts which is in the single texts realized by various ways. The motive of the snake as formed in the single interpreted texts is a highly complex motive in all the cases. Thanks to the possibility of connotation with the snakes from the sphere of the Bible and mythology the literary motive of the snake becomes a...
Semiotic analysis of Victoria's Secret communication
Jílková, Kristýna ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Podzimek, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis approaches persuasive communication of a chosen company from the point of view of semiotics. It focuses on main areas of Victoria's Secret communication, mainly their well known The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Selected seven video samples over the three- year period cover the main segment of its communication (television advertising, TV broadcasted fashion show) and the means this company uses to approach its audience. We were interested in how the media message is constructed and what the predominant themes are. Also, if all levels of the message correspond with company's promoted values. The chosen method of research is semiotic analysis, applying conceptual framework of Roland Barthes and his terminology and methodology used for revealing of a built-in ideology. The sample is examined in terms of storyline, definiton of primary and secondary signs, description of technical codes and syntagmatic and paradigmatic sorting. Gradually, the meanings of signs in both primary and secondary level of signification are identified along with present myths. This analysis focuses on proclaimed image of a woman and power in comparison with those communicated. In conclusion, a myth of the Victoria's Secret brand's communication is formulated and discrepancies in communication with the...

Štechová, Markéta ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Wolák, Radim (referee)
The diploma thesis "Production Ideology of the television serial Proč bychom se netopili" deals with the production process in the making of a television serial. The initial focus was on the formation of one of the main characters, Keny, and on his position in the production as a whole. The thesis builds upon the ideas developed by cultural studies. These combine the structuralist approach inspired by the linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure with the ideological approach based mainly on the thought of Louis Althusser. The production process is enquired into by Elena Levine who distinguishes five key categories of production. The research section which represents the core of the present diploma thesis is methodologically formed by grounded theory. It is based on qualitative interviews with those in key positions with respect to the production process. In the analytical section, the thesis operates with Roland Barthes's concept of mythologies. In the interviews, the informants make reference to the category of production routine, of the myth concerning the ideal "waterman" (the main character Keny being a symbol of this myth), of the production conditions in Czech Television and of the viewer who appears to be the ultimate instance. These categories constitute the mythology of the exceptional which...

Machoňová, Ivana ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the national presentation of the Czech Republic at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai in terms of mythology, symbols, signs and codes. It describes the history of the World Exhibitions, attempts to highlight Czechoslovak achievements and on the basis of that to define key points of successful communication for an international, predominately Chinese audience. This can help visitors from China identify with the Czech Republic. A mythological analysis is executed examining the exterior of the Czech pavilion, the exhibition inside, and notes narrative structures of individual exhibits and how they work to provide the preferred interpretation. Part of the overall analysis includes an overview of supporting events, which also help to strengthen the perception of Czech Republic to visitors. The information gleaned is used to summarize learnings that could be useful for the upcoming EXPO in Milan in 2015.
Post psychedelic relief
Zdvořáček, Tomáš ; Vaněk, Vojtěch (referee) ; Gabriel, Michal (advisor)
The aim of the bachelor thesis was to create a sculptural form of the Greek Morpheus. In Greek mythology, Morpheus is the son of the sleep god Hypnosis - he is the god of dreams, responsible for what we dream about. Morphea portrays the work as a "graphics card of the sleep construct", an intelligent entity living on the edge of human consciousness. The Greeks imagined him as a little boy with wings on his temples. He understands Morpheus' work as a column of energy processing billions of dreams simultaneously. As part of the bachelor's thesis, a two-and-a-half-meter-high column was modeled and cast into a laminate, covered on the surface with a finely modeled relief in the post-psychedelic style. In searching for the formal language of the relief, the author used the system of mutual connections from the computer game Factorio.
