Narrators of Josef Škvorecký

The thesis analyses two short stories of Josef Škvorecký from 1948, Cesta k ateliérům and Divák v únorové noci. Besides the basic inclusion in the author's work are the short stories put to a detailed analyse of compositional and language elements. Main focus is concentrated on the subject of ich-narrator, which merges with the main character, and on his narrative methods and functions in the textual construction. Short stories of Jan Zábrana in the historical context

This bachelor thesis deals with Jan Zábrana's short stories from the 1950s. With the example of the short story V noci u pece, it tries to demonstrate the specifics of Zábrana's prose in the context of literary history. In the first place, it examines the "illusion of reality" which arises during reading of the text. At the same time, it tries to prove that prose is determined by historical circumstances. Therefore, the thesis focuses on the following categories: narrator, language, space and time. In order to analyze these categories, suitable works of literary theory dealing with the individual categories have been consulted and the consequent findings are demonstrated on specific examples from Zábrana's text.

Making use of Povídky malostranské in teaching literature at elementary school

The first part of the thesis presents didactically transformed interpretation about Jan Neruda, his life and work, and about Povídky malostranské as a part of the complex. There is general information about the cycle of short stories. The process of creating of this work and also the themes are outlined here (distinctive features of Povídky malostranské), which could be used at school. Lessons can be focused on the characters, narrative style, or spacetime. In the following chapters there are the basic facts about Czech pubescent readers, the evaluation of structured interviews with primary school teachers about their experiences and the way how to work with Povídky malostranské there is summarized knowledge about the way how the authors handle the topic of Povídky malostranské of reading-books. The three model lessons based on the working with the texts (each lesson is focused on one of the distinctive features of this work) are the important part of this thesis. These lessons were taught at elementary school, therefore they are provided with the evaluation.

Social aspects of the forced community in Terezin

This study deals with aspects of the everyday social reality of the forced community in the Terezin ghetto in 1941-1945. It is a microsociological introspection of the life of the prisoners that lived in the ghetto. It aims to define social factors that influenced the lives of people that were stigmatized, fought for their lives and lived in border-line situations. The research part of the study uses biographical method. It uses 10 recorded testimonials of survivors - former Terezin prisoners. The research was carried out by means of partly structured interviews. The questions dealt with internal and external factors that created the daily reality of this forced community. The aim was to map their subjective perception of life conditions, social ties, both negative and positive factors and further personal utterances of the narrators. The testimonies serve for better and deeper understanding of the Terezin reality. The factors that affected the community in a negative way included fear of the unknown, fear of loosing close friends and relatives, very bad life conditions that strongly affected the negative mind-set of people and loss of moral values. In contrast, the positive factors included culture and sports that were welcomed by the prisoners as they allowed them to shift aside gloomy thoughts....

The narrative study: Absalom's cycle

6 The result of my thesis is the finding that narrative analysis is an approach that allows understanding biblical text in a bigger scope. The better comprehension is particularly given by understanding of the deep narrative structures. This works also for the exegesis where the narrative-analytical frame serves as a sieve that separates statements burdened by theology. However these statements can be seen as the door through which we can enter the story and determine its fundamental message. On the other hand, narrative approach cannot be considered as an all-embracing approach for understanding the Old Testament text, because it does not help us neither to discover what exactly led the author to create the Absalom's cycle, nor to define what demands he places on the readers.

Interpreting Narrative Techniques in Moby-Dick

Thesis Abstract The objective of this thesis is to map the narrative strategies of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. By applying different narrative theories to Moby-Dick, it explores and assesses mainly the narrative reliability (Wayne C. Booth) and the narrative situation (Franz K. Stanzel). Ishmael is generally considered to be an example of an unreliable narrator and in this thesis manifestations of his unreliability are evaluated. Special attention is devoted to the inconsistencies in the narrative (e.g. recurring disappearances of Ishmael, shifts in focus on some of the characters, complete disappearances of other characters) and their treatment, taking the general academic consensus into account. Such phenomena are discussed as deliberately and consciously incorporated into the narrative, rather than being a result of a precipitated writing process. Apart from the formal inconsistencies, the narrative also includes incongruities of thematic nature (e.g. questionable value-scheme according to Rimmon- Kenan). By employing Stanzel's narrative theory, the thesis discusses Ishmael's oscillation between "narrator" and "reflector," with special focus on the dramatic chapters. Using both of these conceptions, Moby-Dick is assessed from two different perspectives, hopefully shedding some light on the complex...

The role of a writer in selected metafictional novels Bc. Eva Šulcová Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the genre of metafictional novel. The aim of the diploma thesis is to identify various internal motivations for the usage of metafiction technique in literature and to describe the role of a writer. The first part summarizes the theoretical background of the genre and formulates some characteristic features of metafictional novel (emphasized vicariousness of the narrative, reflection of the creative act, personality of the writer, or the problematized relationship between reality and fiction), which were all illustrated by the analysis of André Gide's novel The Counterfeiters. The second part consists of interpretations of three metafictional novels. The interpretations aim at a complex analysis of the author and at a description of various functions of the metafiction technique as a constituent of the work's meaning. Gide uses metafiction to display the discrepancy between reality and illusion, thus uncovering hypocrisies of society and passing judgement on it. To Čapek, metafiction is a tool for applying multiperspectivity to his storyline, thus creating a metaphor of varying epistemic principles. The Prose Fiction of Miloš Urban within the Frame of Key Narrative Categories

(in English): The bachelor's diploma thesis deals with the prose fiction of Miloš Urban and aims at a complex interpretation of his work with the help of the key narratives categories. The text of the thesis is based on textual analysis and application of established narrative concepts and categories. Therefore, it covers the categories of the plot, protagonists, space, time and the narrator; each category is first specified in its general terms and then applied to the analysis of specific texts.

Short exotic stories in work of Julius Zeyer

Work "Short exotic stories in work of Julius Zeyer" deals with five selected Zeyer's works that are set in the exotic land of India and Far East. One prose is associated with India, the other four with China and Japan. The works are a result of careful collecting, translating and creative work of Julius Zeyer. The present diploma thesis outlined in brief the life of Julius Zeyer and its role in the contemporary literature. It characterized Zeyer's interest in the exotic motives and way he followed them. The diploma thesis also considered form of the Zeyer's prose. The present work examined characteristics of plot and main characters and as well as the representation of the exotic places. It showed that the narrative places take part in creating the atmosphere that corresponds to the current experience of the characters. The nature of the characters is revealed against the background of the plot. Zeyer elaborated mutual connection between the characters and areas. Part of the interpretation was in each case devoted to the overall Zeyer's evocation of India, China and Japan and its artistic depth.
