Lilliputians.Representations of the bodily "difference" in the Prague's freakshow culture 1820-1940
Herza, Filip ; Storchová, Lucie (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
In the following essay, I focus on the representations of bodily "difference" in the Prague's freakshow culture, particulary on the displays of the so called "Lilliputians", which were popular among the public from the beginning of the 19th Century to the 40's of the 20th Century. Firstly, I introduce the Prague's curiosity exhibitions as a specific social praxis and I compare them with similar displays in Europe and the United States. In the second part of this essay, I try to analyse those exhibitions critically, using the concepts from the present disability studies discourse. I deal with the bodily "otherness" as a category of difference, which arises from the intersection of different ideologies. According to the point of view, this category shaped the individual and collective identities and fostered the social hierarchies of the time. Throughout the essay, I focus on the dis/continuities in the imagination of bodily "difference" and I try to describe the specificity of the Czech freakshow tradition. Key words: 19th Century, body, representations, bodily difference, abnormality, ideology

Cuba, The United States of America, media, Granma, The Washington Post, Cuban-American relations, ideology
Kadlecová, Gabriela ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Šmíd, Milan (referee)
This bachelor thesis compares how American media, particularly The Washington Post, informed about important world events with the information published in the Cuban daily newspaper Granma. Observed time range is June 21 to July 21 2009. The Cuban daily newspaper Granma comes out worse in this comparison because ideology of the Cuban Communist Party is clear in the majority of its articles. Even tough the newspaper regularly published articles not burdened by ideology, for example about sports or culture, in many texts that appeared in the political section in the followed period, ideology was clear and they were not written in an objective way. Most tinted articles were published in connection with the "Cuban Five" and the coup d'état in Honduras. However, neither was The Washington Post fully objective: too much space was dedicated to some topics, which proves for example the death of Michael Jackson. A similar case represents the economic situation, to which even several articles a day were dedicated. In addition, it obviously gave priority to the United States of America and overlooked events in the rest of the world.
Ronald Reagan and the Rise of the New Christian Right
Bärtl, Štěpán ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Anděl, Petr (referee)
The bachelor's thesis "Ronald Reagan and the Rise of the New Christian Right" deals with the role of religion in American politics during Ronald Reagan's presidency in the 1980s. The emergence of the religious right movement is explained as a response to the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and the 1970s and as part of the so-called Culture War. The New Christian Right used political lobbying in an attempt to promote conservative values in various social issues. By analyzing primary sources and secondary literature, the author seeks to explain to what extent the movement was successful in implementing their program into actual policy. Furthermore, the thesis attempts to answer the question, whether Ronald Reagan was a president of the Christian Right. The thesis is divided into two sections. The first part deals with the main issues in American society after the Second World War and explains the reasons that led conservative Christians to become politically active. It goes on to explain the ideology behind the New Christian Right movement, the ways in which it tried to achieve its goals, and its most prominent organizations and members. The second part of the thesis deals with the 40th president and his relationship with the New Christian Right. Based on an analysis of Reagan's approach...

Diploma thesis ,, Mythology and ideology of advertisement in magazine Vlasta from 1947 and 2011" deals with a specific way of understanding of values by current society, of a role of woman and family expressed by advertisement and where we can find modern myths and ideology. I chose two issues for analysis, issue 1 from year 1947 and issue 65 from year 2011. In theoretic part we described the origin of myths, their changes and understanding modern myths by current society. We tried to explain meaning of ideology, understanding of character man and woman in advertisement before and now, semiotic codes as per Barthes, Saussure and Peirce and stereotype usage. In practical part we tried to find out how myths are connected with theme family, place and a role of woman and ideology of current society. We tried to find modern myths in nowaday and past advertisements. We applied semiotic and visual analysis on every advertisement from both issues, tried to find signs and how they changed. Changes in mythology are affected by ideology of society, we can see changes in form of advertisement, in issue 65 are mainly colourful photographs, competitions and advertisement for next Vlasta issue.
Ideology of Liberalism, or Ideology after its own End
Korda, Tomáš ; Suša, Oleg (advisor) ; Hauser, Michael (referee)
The essay begins with Benjamin`s comprehension of truth and his method of constellation which aims to the truth. I connect the method to the act of naming, which I derive from comprehension of subject in German idealism. Method is necessary condition for very constellation of liberal ideology. Contemporary liberalism thus does not only symbolize time after "the end ideology", but even space of time, when the ideology acquire its own most effective form. "The truth became most effective form of lie." In this sense I continue in critique of postmodernism as the ideology of late capitalism. In fine I outline the way to postmodernism by force of "risk thinking" which remains faithful to dialectic. Solely immanent critique which is far from normative critique of postmodernism sets in motion rigid conditions caused by omnipresent ideology.
