The Relationship Between Media Ownership and News Content: A Quantitative Content Analysis of Year In Review Articles on 2019 and 2020 in Czech Media
Bláhová, Kateřina ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
This master's thesis explores the relationship between news content and owners of print and online media publishers in the Czech Republic. In the recent decade, the Czech media scene has been subject to a phenomenon called oligarchisation, a process when vast most majority of international owners were gradually replaced by local media moguls who also do business in other sectors than the media. The theoretical part of the thesis looks at the media oligarchisation in the Central and Eastern Europe and associated threats to the standards of journalism and democracy per se. The empirical part offers a quantitative content analysis of year in review articles on 2019 and 2020. These articles were published in print and online newspapers in the five main media houses. The coding unit for analysis is an evaluative mention, i.e. only one part of each article, dedicated to a single event, name or trend. The resulting data is tested by a simple analysis of relative frequency, and is also subjected to Pearson's chi-square test. This latter examines the relationships of categorical variables. Subsequently, a correspondence analysis focuses on the most significant associations between media houses and variables of the analysed articles. The results of the analyses indicated that three of the five examined...

The picture of mental illness in the print media in three central European countries
Nawková, Lucie ; Jirák, Roman (advisor) ; Bražinová, Alexandra (referee) ; Vevera, Jan (referee)
Media are considered to be the public's primary source of information regarding mental illness. Evidence suggests that media representations of people with psychiatric disorders are frequently negative and contribute to their stigmatization. On the other hand, media can play an important role in reducing this stigmatisation by providing adequate information about this topic and engaging in antistigma campaigns. Up to now there was no standardised measurement of the stigma of mental illness in print media using clearly operationalized definitions. The objectives of this project were twofold; to develop a standardised and objective instrument to measure stigma of mental illness in print media; and to conduct an analysis of the current coverage on mental health/illness issues in Czech, Croatian, and Slovak print media. The development of the Picture of Mental Illness in Newspapers (PICMIN) instrument was based on the principles of content analysis, a research technique for making replicable and valid inferences from text to the kontext in their use. The instrument consists of eleven descriptive and five analytical categories. The most interesting findings based on the analysis of media representations of mental illness were; a similarly high level of stigmatizing articles across countries, clearly...
Portrayal of Gabriela Koukalová in the press from January 2017 to June 2019
Sedláčková, Adéla ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with the analysis of Gabriela Koukalová's media portrayal in selected print media in the period January 2017 - June 2019. This period was determined due to changes in Gabriela Koukalová's professional focus, as early 2017 she was a successful biathlete who has many victories from international competitions. She stopped racing in autumn of 2017 and due to the controversial biography she published in 2018, she announced retirement from her biathlon career in 2019. The aim is to find out whether the media image of Gabriela Koukalová at a time when she was a top biathlete differs from the media image that she had when she stopped competing. The theoretical part presents the role of the media in society and the theoretical definition of the construction of the media image. This section also includes mediasport, and media portrayal of biathlon and women in sports. The methodological part of the work describes the chosen analysis methods and the process of data recording. The analytical part of the work is devoted to the interpretation of the obtained results.
The Image of Children's Choirs in Czech Press before and after the "Kulínský Case"
Vrbová, Eliška ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Láb, Filip (referee)
This thesis focuses on a media image of children's choirs influenced by the so-called "Kulínský Case". The aim of this thesis is to find out how and how often the Czech press informs about children's choirs and if the aforementioned case somehow changed the presentation of this content. The term "Kulínský Case" refers to the controversial case when choirmaster Bohumil Kulínský was found guilty of sexually abusing underage girls. First part of this thesis covers the media theories such as the news values and also describes the concepts linked with choir singing. In the research part, the results of quantitative and qualitative content analysis of three Czech daily newspapers Mladá fronta DNES, Lidové noviny and Právo are presented and interpreted. The analysis is focused on the content published in Prague editions of these three newspapers in two selected time frames. These time frames had been selected in accordance with the development of the "Kulínský Case". The research focuses on the frequency of the published texts, on used genres, newspaper sections and on the meaning and quality of the texts. Afterwards ensues the comparison of the two selected time frames. Furthermore, the last part of this research is focused on the media coverage of the death of Bohumil Kulínský by the online news...
Influence of Advertisers on Media Coverage on the example of Motoring Magazines
Formánek, Vojtěch ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
This thesis examines the influence of advertisers on the content of printed motoring magazines through the method of quantitative content analysis. The thesis asks whether an increasement of advertising can or can not influence media's reporting on advertisers' products. The thesis examines three Czech printed motoring magazines: Svět motorů, Automobil revue and auto motor a sport. The theoretical part deals with the dual-market topic, in other words the theory of two types of media's customers: paying readers and paying advertisers. They can - and according to the theory they often do - differ in their interests. The advertiser is interested in showing his products in the media in the best possible light, on the contrary, the reader is interested in being informed as objectively as possible. The theoretical part is based mainly on McQuail (2009) and Jirák and Köpplová (2015), who deal, inter alia, with the dilemma of two customers. Part of the theory is devoted to several other research which have examined the same topic; e. g. in the context of Italian fashion magazines. The work itself is based on research questions that ask about a correlation between the amount of advertising and amount (and tonality) of editorial content devoted to the advertisers as well as a possible influence of...
The splendors and miseries of DTP: desktop publishing and common practice of Czech publishing houses
Falta, Matěj ; Slanec, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
Diploma thesis Te splendors and miseries of DTP: desktop publishing and common practice of Czech publishing houses tries to map the current technical and personnel aspect of the DTP departments within Czech publishing houses. It uses a quantitative method of questionnaire survey. In the practical part of the research, it managed to obtain data from nine of the ten selected publishers. It was chosen on the basis of their readership with the help of data from the Union of Publishers. Undoubtedly, the main contribution of this thesis is the topic itself - text focuses on a group of media professionals, who are crucial for proper functioning of the print media, although it is constantly overlooked by academia. Tis diploma thesis does not bring any revolutionary knowledge about the feld of print media in the Czech Republic, although with the obtained data it is possible to at least partially analyze jobs and style of work of media professionals in DTP departments. Te work is a small quantitative contribution to the academic discussion, which unfortunately is not currently taking place, although it should.
