The Taliban in a pedal boat: A visual framing analysis of Associated Press and Reuters news photographs of the fundamentalist regime after the end of the Afghanistan war
Gironès Martín, Cristina ; Lábová, Sandra (advisor) ; Turková, Kateřina (referee)
The early photographic coverage of the Afghanistan war in 2001 was part of the 'War on terror' discourse, arising from the 9/11 attacks. The information environment was shaped by the US administration's control (Cherkaoui, 2017), and frames were used to depict the enemy, the Taliban, in a way that justified the military intervention (Miller, 2004). Twenty years later, in 2021, US forces decided to leave the country definitively; thus, the war is considered over. This study compares the visual representation of the fundamentalists in Associated Press and Reuters news photographs in 2001 and 2021 through the lens of framing theory (Entman, 1993) with the peace journalism concept (Galtung, 1986). For this aim, a mixed methodology is employed. On one hand, the content analysis discovered that after 9/11 a polarized frame was used to portray the Taliban, something that strongly changed after the war ended. Even though peace is not completely established, the fighters are overall seen from a more humanizing point of view. On the other hand, the semiology analysis found that in 2021 Western coverage still reproduces the Us/Other rhetoric which is reinforced by a misperception of the Arab/Muslim world. Keywords Afghanistan war; framing; peace journalism; photojournalism; stereotypes; information dominance.

Parkanová, Eva ; Kucharská, Anna (advisor) ; Presslerová, Pavla (referee)
The present bachelor thesis deals with the issues and possible specifics that come up in context within the scope of motherhood when the mother is visually impaired. The aim of this thesis is to compare what is known so far about parenting whilst destitute of vision with the real experiences of specific visually impaired mothers whom I have interviewed. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part consists of three sections. The first section is included in the thesis in order to define visual impairment and to illuminate the specifics of the personality development of the visually impaired individual, focusing on the periods of adolescence and adulthood. The second chapter defines parenting, outlines for the reader the current state of research on the topic of parenting by individuals with visual impairment and presents the essential specifics of this parental role and their children. The third chapter characterizes the prejudice against people with visual impairments, followed by a closer look at the biases against these women and mothers. The empirical section includes findings from a qualitative study. The research method chosen was semi-structured interviews conducted with four mothers with visual impairment from Prague, which were later transcribed...

Women in the English Drama of the Orient
Němcová, Nikol ; Nováková, Soňa (advisor) ; Kolinská, Klára (referee)
The subject of this BA thesis are plays set in the Orient, a new genre that started to gain popularity in the Restoration period. These plays, commonly inspired by the popular travelogues to the Orient and historical accounts, are characterised by their collection of stock characters, repeating topoi and orientalised images that represent the Orient more as a conception created by the West than an actual place. Nevertheless, in analysis of some of the plays I shall argue that these works also offer possible commentaries on the British society of the time and that they can be used as arguments criticizing or reinforcing the contemporary perception of women by dealing with such otherwise rather inaccessible themes as women stepping out of their social boundaries, femininity or female sexuality. In order to advocate my thesis I plan to use four different tragedies with Middle-Eastern settings, specifically Rhodes, Morocco, Turkey and Colchis (located mostly in present-day Georgia and Turkey). All these plays were written between 1663 and 1696 and might be considered some of the most representative examples of the genre. They include William Davenant's The Siege of Rhodes (1663), Elkanah Settle's The Empress of Morocco (1673), Mary Pix's Ibrahim, the Thirteenth Emperour of the Turks (1696) and...
Men and their lifeworld in beer advertisements
Svobodová, Lucie ; Lupač, Petr (advisor) ; Vinopal, Jiří (referee)
This thesis deals with the widely discussed topic of gender stereotypes. Most of the attention of experts and also the general public in this area is focused on the issues of stereotypes associated with women's roles. This work attempts to inspect the other - the men's - side of gender stereotypes. The aim is to reconstruct the male stereotypes and their lifeworld in commercials which from this perspective focus on perhaps still typically masculine product: beer. The presence of traditional stereotypes of male and female roles is observed at the same time. The research problem is solved through a content analysis of beer advertisements and reconstruction of the lifeworld of men in them.
Recurrent stereotypes in magazines for teenagers at the beginning of the eighties and today-the media image of parents
Mišíková, Kateřina ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Švec, Štefan (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Repeating Stereotypes in Youth Magazines in Early 1980s and Today - Media Image of Parents" deals with a content analysis of two magazines, Sedmička pionýrů and Bravo Girl, focusing on the image of parents created by these magazines. The theoretical part explains the terms stereotype and media image and describes the content analysis method. It also deals with mental development of teenagers and the influence of the media. This part presents the results of several studies focused on the media preferences of teenagers. Finally it provides information about the history of the above magazines, their characteristics and a description of the individual sections. On the example of Sedmička pionýrů the thesis describes how political situation and changes in society affect the magazine's form and content. The part devoted to the Bravo Girl magazine concentrates, among other things, on girls magazines in general, on the language they use and on their effect on young girls. The analytical part describes the processing of the content analysis and its results including charts and tables. It tries to answer the question whether the images of parents show stereotypes and whether these stereotypes repeat themselves over time.

Jelínková, Milena ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
The thesis deals with a compare of media image of Topolanek, Fischer and Necas government in periodical Tyden. I took two aims - first, to find out if any opinion inclination or political orientation is expressed in articles about Czech governments published in the periodical Tyden, second, to compare media image of all three governments among themselves and to trace potential differences. The theoretical section focuses on objectivity and bias, construction and representation. Substantial part of the theory is comprised of specific political communication and mediatisation together with trends in this field recognized in last decades. The empirical section is composed by quantitative analysis that compares representative articles and it is added by an content analysis of front pages of the periodical Tyden. Regardless of a fact, that the Jan Fischer government was very popular in public, the media picture of this particular government is rather negative comparing others. On the contrary there were found specific features showing that the Mirek Topolanek government was pictured more substantially. In generally the periodical Tyden uses negativity and stereotypes in articles about governments but in no case this is a predominant procedure of media products construct. The media picture of last three...
