The comparasion of the status of journalists in the American and the Czech audiovisual pop culture

The aim of this thesis is to compare the use of journalists as characters in Czech and US audiovisual industry, primarily cinema. As expected, the work finds that Czech cinema cannot compare with American in volume. Also, different history has led to a completely different position of journalists in culture and popular culture in both regions. The thesis tries to introduce both systems and look for reasons of absence of journalistic characters in Czech cinema. It also examines the way in which cinema is able to communicate at all and what demands can we have on the dialogue between piece of art and us. The thesis deals with the transformation of journalistic profession into genre and archetype in American mainstream cinema. The ambition of the work, which in many respects compares the present with the absence, is to describe the space in which the observed presence and absence take place. The main difficulty in elaborating the topic is the marginal size of the Czech market compared to the American and even more marginal use of the journalist as a prominent figure in it. Journalist as a digital nomad

This diploma thesis deals with digital nomadism (modern way of teleworking, enabled mainly by the existence of internet and social networks) and implications of this phenomenon for journalistic environment and media functioning. In the Czech environment, this issue has been explored so far, and digital nomadism is rapidly changing in view of the rapid technological development of the media environment on the internet. The author wanted to add this gap to the thesis, both in theory and in primary research. Through interviews with specific digital nomads (especially Czechs and Czechs), she tries to answer basic questions about how the digital nomads actually happened, their motivation, the specifics of their work and, last but not least, whether it is possible as a digital nomad - actually a journalist to feed. Jaroslav Hašek - author of short stories, journalist and politics

The diploma thesis analyzes and compares three life and social roles of one of the most well-known writers of Czech literature, Jaroslav Hasek. Specifically, it is his role as a storyteller, a journalist and a politician. My work is focused on the analysis of the blend and differences between these roles pertaining to the development and context of both the time period and Hasek. The analysis is divided into several parts and it tries to view Hasek from different points of view. Specifically, it deals with the author's historical genesis, then with the narratological analysis of short stories and finally the content analysis associated with the reference to Jaroslav Hasek's language resources.

Advocacy journalism on the example of Jakub Patočka

This diploma thesis deals with the so-called advocacy journalism, which is in the Czech media environment trying to explain on the example of a journalist, sociologist, former environmental activist and member of two political parties - ČSSD and Green Party - Jakub Patočka. The thesis puts journalism in context with other types of journalistic roles and the concept of journalism in liberal democratic societies. The research method of the work is an in-depth semi-structured interview, which examines primarily Patočka's perception of journalism and politics and their blending. The text focuses primarily on the period since 2003 when Patočka joined the Green Party until 2017, when the Brno Social Democrats decided to exclude him from the party. The work is divided into Patočka's journalistic and political career. Journalistic chapters are devoted to his work in the magazine Last (later Seven) generation, Literární noviny and Deník Referendum. One chapter describes his role in the so-called Kuřim case. The Slovak government crisis in 2018

The regular interaction between the government and the President of the Slovak Republic in case of influencing public opinion during the period also played an important role in society. Many absurd allegations and attacks on individual representatives of the Slovak political scene have caused many doubts and questions about concrete problems. Efforts to influence the public opinion were a priority for all government officials, but also for the president himself. The supposed aim of my bachelor thesis should be to contribute to clarify the issue, evaluate the whole situation - reconstruction and development of the crisis from the perspective of the president from relevant information. The essence of the thesis is the analysis of presidential practices, especially the differences between the real powers that arise from the Constitution and practice due to the fact that the President of the Slovak Republic played an important role in the society during the crisis. The research question is, therefore, to find out what role the President played in the crisis, whether he exceeded his constitutional powers and violated constitutional customs, or his actions were fully in accordance with constitutional powers and customs.

Representation of journalists in videogames

The Representation of Journalists in Videogames aims to find out how do videogame developers represent journalists in the mainstream videogames. The analysis is based on five case studies of various videogames but it also includes sequels and prequels of the selected games. The author of this thesis analyzes nine videogame journalists which can be differentiated into several categories: investigative reporters, photojournalists, paparazzis, radio and TV reporters and hosts of various television shows. Their behavior is not the only aspect this thesis analyzes because their visual appearance is also fully in the hands of the game developers. This thesis proves that the videogame journalists are sometimes depicted stereotypically but if so, it is always for a reason. Videogame developers do not always use this sort of depictions and can even accurately describe journalistic practice and behavior. Journalism is always better described if the journalist is a heroic protagonist of their videogame. If they are villains, it is often described using various negative stereotypes.

Character of Journalist in the Danish Series Borgen

anglicky The aim of the diploma thesis Character of A Journalist in the Danish Series Borgen is to analyze the role and development of the journalist's character in terms of his professional life. At the same time, the aim is to create a representative typology of situations the journalist often gets into. The thesis deals with myths and stereotypes that surround the journalist profession and finds out how are these stereotypes reflected in the audiovisual work. The basis of the analysis and narrative approach is book Narrative as Virtual Reality: Immersion and Interactivity in Literature and Electronic Media by Marie-Laure Ryan. It takes a narrative as a mental image or construct, which consists of a world inhabited by beings who, by their actions, change the world. To create a situation typology the thesis works with set of diagrams. The diagrams visualise relationships and events between the characters. These diagrams are created by a visualisation program that makes it easy to understand the relationships between individual subjects, highlights the repeating situations and the characters at the heart of the action. It also allows more effective analysis through the overal view of the series and their systematic and complete description.

The framework of a journalist's profession in Mexiko - professionalism, ethics and safety

This thesis is focused on chosen attributes of a journalist profession in Mexico related to the topics of ethics, professionalism and security. This thesis considers various aspects that affect performance of this profession, such as current political and economic situation in the country or historical context. It also concentrates on a basic description of normative environment of Mexican media system. This thesis analyses regulations of Mexican journalism done by the state, also a degree of political parallelism, a situation of self-regulation of journalism and a status of journalists within the editorial office and the Mexican society. Furthermore, this study takes into account specific challenges of Mexico. Namely, problems of drug trafficking, high level of corruption and clientelism, which cause high crime not only among journalists but the whole society. These aspects are discussed in the presented study. Regarding the above- mentioned challenges in the country, the thesis also focuses on security and seeks reasons for limited security of Mexican journalists. The practical part presents views of Mexican journalists on the profession of journalism in Mexico. Since journalism is perceived as a mirror of society, this study also provides insights into Mexican society as such.

Ethical Dilemmas That Czech Journalists Face When Reporting on Medicine

The diploma thesis deals with the work of Czech health journalists. The main aim is to find out how they perceive their work. The author opens the first part by explaining some basic concepts of journalistic theory, such as news values and gatekeeping. She also deals with the definition of medicine and health journalism, with the relationship between medicine, the media and society, and draws attention to the issues that arise from informing about these topics. She attempts to clarify some problematic areas related to new scientific discoveries in which journalists may be mistaken. The next part of the diploma is the analysis of semi-structured interviews with Czech health journalists. The author focuses not only on their journalistic routines in the analysis, but also on importance of education, identifying the barriers of their work and ethical dilemmas they face.

Sports Interview and Its Specifics - with Focus on Czech Audio-Visual Media Practice

The interview is one of the journalist's basic methods and that statement also applies to the field of sport journalism. Through talking with athletes, the journalist gets information he afterwards shares with readers, listeners or viewers. When author decides to publish acquired material in the original dialogical form, it becomes of the interview genre. How would an ideal sport interview look like in this respect? What skills should a good sports journalist have? And how to ask the athlete not to answer "obviously"? The explanation on this topic has not existed in the Czech aca- demic sphere yet. For the first time, the diploma thesis Sport interview and Its Spe- cifics has tried to find the supported answers to the previous questions. In four explanatory chapters, the reader is introduced to the issue of media dia- logues with persons from the sports environment. The emphasis is laid on Czech audiovisual media area where the sport interview takes many forms. Besides a lit- erature research and the author's sports journalist practice, the thesis is based on interviews with leading Czech sports journalists.
