Šišková, Martina ; Chalupský, Petr (advisor) ; Topolovská, Tereza (referee)
The thesis "The Reflection of Social, Economic and Cultural Changes in Britain in Selected Early Victorian Fiction" aims to investigate the relationship between the First Industrial Revolution in the Great Britain and the English fiction of this era. It deals with the question if the selected authors reflected major industrial and social changes in their writing and if so, what particular events they described. Further, it is focused on the relationship between the novelists and their works, in other words, if there is any connection between their class origin and their point of view of the social problematic displayed in particular novels. It also tries to find out if the prose writers identified themselves with their novel characters and/or if they projected their own life experience into their stories. The work concerns with literary movements represented in selected early Victorian novels: Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, Hard Times, Oliver Twist and The Personal History of David Copperfield the Younger and William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Key words: Social changes, the Industrial Revolution, the Victorian society, social mobility, the class conflict, the novel

Individual and social contexts of dawnward social mobility
Kubatová, Marie ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Čada, Karel (referee)
The author deals with the phenomenon of individual and social contexts of downward social mobility. She focuses on cases of families with at least one college educated parent whose children did not follow their parents in college education attainment. After defining terms such as social status, social mobility, capital and social reproduction that are key for later analysis, she summarizes previous researches of social mobility and educational inequalities. Thereafter she presents a qualitative analysis of gained interviews with ten respondents. This research has been done by methods of grounded theory that enable to uncover contexts of the analysed phenomenon. The author argues that the phenomenon in general, according to the analysis, is not a problem. It is understood as a problem only after it has been set into the context of the social situation in which the phenomenon occurs. According to the analysis the children of college educated parents do use and develop their abilities gained by socialization and upbringing by college educated parents. Nevertheless, these children do not develop their abilities in the formal system of education that is commonly conceived as the best educational institution. It is just the authority of this institution that creates the social norm - one of the contexts...
Prestige and social stratification in Czech society between 1988-1999
Křepelková, Zuzana ; Duffková, Jana (advisor) ; Buriánek, Jiří (referee)
In 1989 the Czech history was significant for the revolution which meant that Czech society has shifted toward the east to west. The company which prevailed in the egalitarian principles finds itself face to face with the reality of the Western World where their orientation did not belong. In the opinion of people still persisted not only a desire for social security but also a certain amount of indignation over the rapidly growing income differentiation, which was reflected negative evaluation of wealthier people - a role also played a series of scandals (tunneling and rapid collapse of the newly establishing businesses). The Czech company was prior to the1989 only minimally stratified. After the revolution was necessary to create a new elite, the middle class and in parallel to create the new bottom layer. Dynamic development was the emerging middle class old (enterpriser), more gradually evolved a new middle class (professionals with university education) whose conversion is a matter of several generations. Compare prestige (at the time of transform and in front of it) must be used as the default range of 1967 because this is the last range created in communist Czechoslovakia. Communist society was a static society and therefore we believe that stratification in 1989 has not changed. On top...
