Grammatical gender - a Czech-Hungarian experimental comparison

This work, Grammatical gender - a Czech-Hungarian experimental comparison deals with the existence of the grammatical gender in language and its influence on the conceptualization of the inanimate objects of its speakers. Its goal is, through carrying out an experiment on Czech language (that means on a language with grammatical gender) and on Hungarian language (that means on a language without grammatical gender) to verify the assumption, that the Czech native speakers would focus on the grammatical gender while responding, unlike the Hungarian native speakers, whose language does not have grammatical gender. For this purpose, two methods are used. In one of them the respondents have to assign a voice to given inanimate objects (either male or female) or as the case may be, they have to assign a first name. The data was collected through an online questionary. The results of the research verified the previous assumption, that means the influence of grammatical gender on the responses of the Czech native speakers. Except for that, the results also brought findings about Hungarian native speakers' responses, who often focused on the first letter of the name of the given object while responding. Linguistic analysis of posts of Czech news websites on Facebook

The diploma thesis analyzes posts that are produced by three online Czech news websites - Aktuálně.cz, iDnes.cz and Novinky.cz. The lingustic analysis is based on the five linguistic levels - orthography, syntax, lexicology, morphology and stylistics. The news writing style and its characteristics are described in the theoretical part. It is accompanied by the description of the electronic communication phenomena. The key theoretical knowledge about changes in the Czech language used on the Internet is summarized. Chapter focused on Facebook development and its specific features is also included. The results of the analysis show two main tendencies in Czech language used on Facebook by online news websites. Firstly, language originality was used to capture user attention in Facebook feed. Secondly, the economy of language, shortness and conciseness in Facebook posts were identified. Results reveal the high number of spelling errors, high frequency of elliptical and condensed sentences without redundant phrases. The sentences were often replaced by nominal equivalents or fragments without predicates. Neologisms and colloquial Czech are considerably present in the text. The main topic of this thesis is the development of the Czech language at the time of new media and participative journalism. It tries to discover in which way the language develops, what influences effect the language and which of the foreign languages has the biggest impact on it. All of this is demonstrated within the expressions of the user-created videos on the website, YouTube. The web portal is shortly introduced here as well as an example of the new media. The beauty community which deals with cosmetics, fashion and lifestyle (and it's a widespread group on this portal) has been selected as the sample for demonstrating the language development. Their slang is extensive and it slowly spreads even among viewers of the video content as we can see in the feedback they offer in the comments related to the video. The slang is most usually taken from the English language because it is the first language in which beauty videos originated. Some of the words are just taken from the foreign language and not converted to the Czech language, nevertheless the video authors try to convert some of them. This diploma thesis deals with the written form of communication by users of the social networking website Facebook and members of specified groups. Its aim is to map errors in written expression in the topics of spelling lexicography, morphology and syntactics. In addition it is focused on analysing the extent to which typographical rules are disregarded. These problems were investigated by analysis of the inserted statuses and comments by the members of the selected and specified groups of Facebook. In my research, I found that a large number of the authors made elementary mistakes in spelling that are taught in the first grade of the primary school. Another important discovery is that many users hold the opinion that observing the grammatical rules is less of a priority than the content of their communication.
Experience in teaching Czech language at lower-secondary school

The thesis Experience in teaching Czech language at lower-secondary school is focused on the implementation of experiential learning into the Czech language teaching. The thesis consists of two parts. The theoretical part describes the main principles and methods of experiential learning and their use in the context of the Czech language teaching. The practical part presents actual lesson plans, in which principles and methods are used. The lesson plans are focused on teaching communication and acquiring active knowledge of Czech syntax, lexicology and semantics. Based on the experience of implementing of activities in teaching Czech language at the 6th grade of lower-secondary school, the author of the thesis explains importance of the experience in Czech language teaching. The results show the experience could be used effectively in the Czech teaching methodology.
Spanish and Czech Phraseology and Idioms Considering Journalistic Texts

This thesis is focused on the analysis of phrasemes and idioms in Spanish and Czech journalistic texts. In its theoretical part, we discuss the definition of phraseology and idioms as linguistic disciplines within Czech and Spanish linguistics. The practical part contains a sample corpus of phrases and idioms based on selected excerpts from newspaper articles during a specific time period. These linguistic units are divided into thematic groups by their base words, their meaning is explained and formal and substantive similarities between Czech and Spanish are observed. We do not aim at presenting a set of idioms of the language, only to point out the currently used idioms in journalistic texts. Greek as a Source of Enrichment of the Czech Vocabulary

Helena Petáková, Greek as a source of enrichment of the Czech vocabulary Abstract: The Masterʼs thesis examines the influence of the Greek language on the Czech vocabulary from different angles. In the introduction, we define basic terms, which we use in the text, especially "loanword" and with it synonymous "lexical borrowing". Next chapter is devoted to the issues of lexical borrowing in general (motivation, ways of involvement of foreign words in the system of the recipient language, and the sorting options of the loanwords). The third chapter maps borrowing of the Greek words into the Czech language in various periods of development. Furthermore, we are interested in the Czech reception of the Greek language (the admiration of Greek, comparison of Czech with Greek) in the crucial moments of modern history and its connection with national and linguistic defensive trends. After this cultural-historical insight, in the fifth, sixth and seventh chapter we return to the lexical borrowings from Greek. We follow various means by which they entered the Czech language, the way of their involvement in the Czech vocabulary, and finally the semantic and stylistic spheres, in which the Graecisms were most applied in our country. Mgr. Veronika Štěpánová Czech orthoepic codification Abstract This doctoral thesis deals with the codification of standard Czech pronunciation. It focuses on how the phonetic level of the language is studied and described and, more generally, on orthoepic codification, its criteria, sources, relationship to orthography, etc. A historical overview of Czech orthoepic research, in particular of the first attempts at codification, work carried out for the orthoepic manuals Výslovnost spisovné češtiny I (ed. B. Hála; 1955, 1967) and Výslovnost spisovné češtiny II (ed. M. Romportl; 1978) is presented. In addition, research into standard Czech pronunciation from the 1980s to the present day is summarised from a new perspective. The primary focus of the thesis is a critical analysis of the principal Czech orthoepic manuals: not only Výslovnost spisovné češtiny I and II but also some older and newer works. Special attention is given to features (1) whose evaluation has changed over time (e.g. the pronunciation of mě and sh, the use of the glottal stop, simplification of certain consonant clusters, or voice assimilation before sonorants) and (2) which are problematic form the point of view of the contemporary pronunciation norm. Sleep and dream in the Czech picture of the world

The thesis focuses on the conceptual area of sleeping (including waking, dreaming etc.) based on the theories and methods of the cognitive-cultural approach to language. The first chapter deals with the human experience of sleeping. The conceptual area is interpreted both in relation to physical experience and as a part of the Central European cultural code. The second chapter concentrates on the concept and the approach of the linguistic picture of the world (e.g. Bartmiński, 2012), the detection and verification of the semantic connotations method (Bartmiński, Panasiuk, 2001), the conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff, Johnson, 1980/2002), the cognitive conception of metonymy (cf. ibid), and the interaction between metaphor and metonymy (i.e. metaphtonymy, Goosens, 1990, 2002). The third chapter is based on the linguistic data excerpted from various Czech dictionaries and describes the conceptual area. First are introduced derivational nests, then relevant semantic relations and etymology of the selected terms (spát, bdít etc.). The chapter also analyses polysemy of the selected terms in detail, as well as polysemy of their derivatives.
